Top Incoming Freshman:
133 Michael Murphy – RI State Champ, All New England High School
149 Max Carlsten – RI State Finalist
197 Josh Lawrence – CT State Champ, All New England High School

Team Outlook:
The Rhode Island Anchormen return one NCAA qualifier in Shawn Giblin, but have a good group of NEWA placewinners  hoping to join him at the NCAA championships in March. Giblin will start the year at 149 before descending to last year’s weight of 141 for the second half. A few tough transfers join RIC this year in brothers Jonathan and Silas Murray and Silas Cole. Jonathan was 3rd in the NEWA for Bridgewater State last year at 125, while Silas was an NJCAA All-American in 2008 for Nassau Community College. Another All-NEWA selection in the lineup is Kevin Barrucci at 157. He won 25 matches a year ago and should be a force this season. The freshman class is led by a trio of high school New England placewinners that will compete for starting spots as well. With trips to the Desert Duals and Budd Whitehill Duals, the lineup will definitely be tested.

Season Outlook:
USMMA saw a streak of four straight conference championships come to an end last year after an outstanding senior class graduated in 2011. This year, they continue the rebuilding process with some returning starters and a good freshman class. The Mariners return a pair of Centennial placewinners in Josh Miller and Tyler Russell at 165 and 197 and several other lineup veterans. Some new firepower will come from an incoming class featuring multiple state placewinners and state champs like MA champ Mike Mui at 125 TN champ Ricky Fisher at 184. Other freshmen will likely find their way into the starting lineup as the team works to improve on last year’s fifth place conference finish.

Tommy Mirocha  NCAA All American 133 (2011)

Landon Shea Janesville WI  State Champion  125/33
Mark Weber Gilbertville  IA  State Champion  149/57
Nick Fuller Independence  IA  State Champion  174

Season Outlook:
Wartburg ran away and hid with the 2012 NCAA Championship, putting  five in the finals and coming away with four champs to go along with three other All-Americans. Scarily, that team returns eight starters, losing only 3x NCAA Champ Byron Tate and 2x runner-up Bradley Banks. Head Coach Jim Miller has announced that this year will be his last before handing the reigns completely over to co-head coach Eric Keller, and he has a team that is poised to send him out with another NCAA Championship trophy. There is some likely shuffling going on in the lineup, as Anderson, Mirocha, Silvestri, and Waggenhoffer may all move up a weight this year, and that could create a logjam at 157 with All-American Waggenhoffer and qualifier Welter set to battle for the spot right below returning champ Landon Williams. It is a formidable lineup that will be very hard to beat in a dual or tournament setting.

Season outlook:
Last season Augsburg had five All-Americans all place in the top four and finished 2nd as a team behind rival Wartburg. This year, they will have to cope with the loss of a pair of 3x All-Americans in Tony Valek and Orlando Ponce as well as All-American Brad Baus, but they return a strong group of five NCAA qualifiers led by 285 champion Chad Johnson. Will Keeter was 3rd at 141, and he returns as their other All-American. 125 lb. Mike Fuenffinger is fresh off a trip to the Junior World Championships in Greco-Roman and hopes to get on the podium in 2013. Wartburg will be tough to catch this season, but the sheer depth of the Auggie program ensures a tough wrestler at every weight, and that gives them a great chance to add to their trophy case this March.

Jimmy Kuczynski, Dundee Crown, IL
Joey Larson, Lake Geneva Badger, WI

Season outlook:
MSOE brings back a strong nucleus of wrestlers from last year and have augmented the team with a number of good freshmen. Austin Binish was close to qualifying for the NCAA championships last year, an accomplishment he hopes to reach in the new West Region. Luke Gaeth had over 25 wins last year including a pair over NCAA round of 12 Ambrocio from Concordia, but he missed the postseason with an injury. He will also be knocking on the door in 2013. Pete Koostra was sixth at the Great Lakes as a freshman, and Matt Ostovich had 24 wins. Getting back to the NCAA Championships is a big goal for this year, and they have some experienced wrestlers who should get the job done.

FR Ryan Smith transfer Northern Illinois
FR. Aaron Transue (PA) SQ
FR. Levi Veppert (PA 7th)

Season outlook:
With the graduation of NCAA Runner-up Anthony Dattolo and NCAA Qualifier Ryan Wilson, the Colonels lone experienced NCAA participant is Michael Fleck after setting the Wilkes’ single season win record last year with 37 victories. The Colonels do have Mendoza, White, Stough, Oberrender, Fletcher who return as Conference place winners last year. Along with those six, three others have started in Conference in prior years in Krawchuk (who took last year of for academics), Dungee and Matt Transue. There is plenty of depth and some of last year’s reserves will look to crack into the Colonel line-up. A very nice group of freshman and two transfers will also see plenty of mat time and possibly find starting roles. Expect a few new names in the line-up, but certainly the Colonels will once again be putting a very solid team on the mat.

Season outlook:
Three returning All-Americans will form the backbone of the UW-Lax team in 2o12-2013. Adam Sheley and Billy Mayer are both senior 2x All-Americans, and each will be in the hunt for an individual NCAA championship this year. Sheley starts the year at 141, but he may drop to 133 in the second half. Mayer is entrenched at 285 and sits at #4 in both sets of preseason rankings. Kevin O’Brien surprised some last year with his run to the semifinals and eventual 4th place finish at 165, and big things will be expected out of him this season. The rest of the lineup could be in some flux this year with as many as seven different starters at the beginning of the year. A nice freshman class builds up some of the depth the team has lacked in recent seasons, and they will have a chance to make an impact.

285 Alexander Colon (Woburn,MA): MA State Placer

Season outlook:
For the first time in 10 years the Wildcats failed to send a wrestler to the NCAA National Championships and broke a 6 year streak of returning home with an All-American. That being said, the Wildcats will return 8 starters, 7 of them Conference place finisher from last year. They will also see Colin Lenhardt a 2010 National Qualifier (Granted Hardship Wavier- Before Injury Lenhardt was 16-2 with 12 falls) return and move up to 184 lbs. and 2011 All-American Bill Mulligan makes his return at 197 lbs. by January. The incoming recruiting class should make earning a starting spot for JWU very interesting. The Wildcats will see big changes in their lineup this year, especially in changing of weight classes. The 125 lbs. Conference placer Joe Pronk will move up to 133 lbs. The biggest moves will come in the upper weights where, Colin Lenhardt will move into the 184 lbs slot. This will cause a push down effect by mid season. The 184 lbs. Conference placer Connor Nelson will move down to 174 lbs. Conference Finalist Sean Prell will move down to 165 lbs. Conference placer Frank Marotti will move down to 157 lbs. Incoming Freshman and Transfers will be looking to shock some potenial starters by mid-year, so JWU line up may look very different by years end.

Season outlook:
With nine starters returning from last year, Stevens hopes to furhtern ascend the NCAA rankings and bring back multiple All-American awards for the first time since the program was reinstated. 5th place finisher Joey Favia is the clear leader of this team after he put together a great postseason to avenge a pair of losses in the Centennial Championships before finishing 5th in the nation for his first All-American award. Michael Polizzi and CJ Caserta are each back and up a weight class after finishing 2nd in the conference at 141 and 149 respectively in 2012. A strong group of freshmen will help fill in some of the holes in the lineup. Numerous state qualifiers join the team, and a few will find their way into the lineup. Mark Garrity, a 2x VA placewinner has a chance to fill in at 184 while some of the lower weights will be challenged by a number of tough newcomers.

184/197 Josh Roometua – MO champ, 2nd prep New England
197 Jon San Filippo – 6th National Prep
133/141 Chris Siracusa – 2x NY league finalist, Fargo freestyle qualifier

Season outlook:
Wesleyan should have one of their stronger teams in recent memory with most of the lineup returning as upperclassmen. After winning the NEWA championship last year, they should be poised to make an impact at the new Northeast Region, though they will have to deal with a few of the tougher Empire teams.  Three returning NCAA qualifiers should help with that, led by returning All-American Jefferson Ajayi at 184. The freshman class is also strong, though some of those wrestlers will have to wait their turn with such a strong returning lineup.

Sophomore Jake Lowry will lead the Tomcats after an impressive freshman season in which he posted 29 wins and placed second at the Midwest Regional Qualifier. Along with Lowry, Thiel returns senior heavyweight Will Ringer, who posted 14 wins last season, to go along with a fifth-place finish at the Midwest Regional. Along with the returning upperclassmen, Thiel has brought in yet another strong freshmen class including a pair of PA placewinners in Shawn Reynolds and Blake Heim.

A very experienced and battle tested group of returners, along with a talented bunch of freshman and transfers make this look like their best team ever. Dalton Bullard and Joe Rau are both back after each finished 3rd in the nation last year. Rau may move up to 197 to make room for Oklahoma State transfer Mike Benefiel, whose peripatetic journey through college wrestling has landed him at Elmhurst for a final season of eligibility. The lineup may also shift in the other direction, as Earley, Grice, and Ryan could all drop from the 149-165 slots down to 141-157.

Click below to see the first set of rankings from the 2012-2013 season from d3wrestle.com. The information included is based on the best available at the time. 2. Returning 2012 All-Americans are generally listed in order of finish – weight changes obviously affect this.

3. Weight changes are based either on information from coaches or posted 2012-2013 rosters – if the preview info was not definitive, a judgment call was made.
