Season outlook:
With a lot of talented wrestlers back and a strong group of freshmen coming in, this should be an improved year as Head Coach Ned Shuck enters his second season at Heidelberg. Andy Lovins returns at 197 (after football) after winning the OAC and qualifying for the NCAA tournament last year, as does 2011 qualifier Andrew Johnson at 149. Three other OAC finalists just missed the tournament including Delian Schneider at 125, Justin Wharton at 165, and Chris Osborne who lost in overtime to All-American Malave of Mount Union. Of the freshman, both Colin McDermitt and Nino Majoy were state finalists last year and should help to bolster the lineup that should be able contend in both the OAC and the new Mideast region.

Joe Pizzuto – NY Sec 3 100 match winner
Zach Rahl – NJ Regional placer

Season outlook:
WPI had gone through a rebuilding phase where dual meet wins were somewhat hard to come by. That looks be changing, as the team returns four NEWA placewinners and looks to have brought in a talented class that should help the team compete as they mature into college wrestlers. All of the returning conference placewinners are sophomores or juniors, so the Engineers are looking good for the next two seasons at least with that group. A pair of New England area state champs head the incoming class in Chris Schramm and Tanner Burke and are joined by PA qualifier Justin Marsh. With some stability in the coaching staff and a solid foundation on which to build, WPI looks to be headed int he right direction.

They will have to make up for the loss of 2x All-American Ryan Timmerman at 141, but also return three regional placewinners from last year’s team. Bohler and Roach combined for one win at the tournament last year and are hoping to make it onto the podium this season with another year of experience. Leading this year’s team are a pair of three-year starters in seniors Alex Crown and Cody Catalina. Barring injury, Crown (84-19) should cruise past 100 career victories and could make a run at the program’s career victory record. Season outlook:
Loras brings a young team with 27 incoming freshman into 2012-2013, so there is a lot of hope for the future. In the present, the team should be led by a pair of NCAA qualifiers in Stephan Birt, a 2011 qualifier back from a year away, and Joe Wood, who surprised many with his run to an IIAC title and 4th place finish at the NCAA Championships in March. Loras is also set to host the first Central Region championship in head coach Randy Steward’s 20th season at the helm.

Season outlook:
Heading the roster is 2012 All-American Charlie Frankel, who was granted an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA for an injury earlier in his career. Frankel had his best season in 2011-12 as the 125-pounder finished with a 26-11 record, captured the Metropolitan Conference title and placed eighth at the NCAAs. Two former national qualifiers are back in Emmanuel Ajagbe (157) and Aaron Karns (197). Ajagbe, a senior who reached the national stage as a rookie in 2010, went 19-7 and placed sixth at the Metros last season. Karns, a national qualifier in 2011, has returned to the school after a short hiatus. He went 27-9 in his lone year with the Aggies.

Leading the cast of newcomers are freshman Connor Kirkegard (125), James Dugan (165), Dallas Winston (174) and Matthew Jorgensen (285). Kirkegard was a two-time Connecticut state champion in high school while Winston captured a New Jersey state title last year. Dugan finished third in the 2012 New Jersey state championships and Jorgensen placed seventh in the 2012 Pennsylvania state championships.

Mark McDonnell, 2X IL state champion
Willie Anaya, 2X IL state placefinisher
Matt Dwyer, IL state champion,
Justin Karkula, Fargo Junior All American, WI
Garrett Webb, 2X IL runner up

Season outlook:
Whitewater adds a very strong recruiting class to a nice group of returning starters, and this is a team that looks to be able to contend for the Midwest Regional title. Grant Sutter joined the roster late last year and ended up 3rd in the nation. He leads a returning crew that also features 2x NCAA qualifier Jake Fredericksen and 2012 qualifier Cade Sarbacker. Some of Whitewater’s wrestlers may return in the second half of the year, so the beginning of the season may be the new wrestlers getting acclimated to college wrestling while some strong returners come back in January. The incoming class is one of the best Whitewater has had with multiple state champs and placewinners along with 2x Junior National runner-up. If the new wrestlers and top returners can all optimally fit in the lineup, the team may improve on 2012, their best season in 20 years.

Season outlook:
Case is headed in a new direction this year as former Mount Union head coach and John Carroll All-American Mark Hawald takes over after Chris Nader was the interim head coach in the year following Bob DelRosa’s passing. The team is very young and will feature a lot of freshmen in the starting lineup. The first goal for Hawald will be building up the roster size from its current 13. Josh Hall an Ohio state placewinner, is possibly the best of the incoming wrestlers, and he, along with many of the other 8 freshmen will be counted on from day 1.

Captains Josten Coleman, Kevin Fynboh and Kyle LeDuc have been working hard in the off season and have high expectations for themselves as well as the Cobber team. Overall the Cobbers have been working hard in the off season and are looking forward to another aggressive season with a schedule that will compete against programs in NCAA DI, DII and DIII: North Dakota State, University of Minnesota, Saint Cloud State, Augustana, Wartburg, Augsburg, UW-La Crosse, Coe, Cornell, Elmhurst, St John’s, Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Luther.

In addition to Gott, both Gerg Ryan and Bryan Steinmentz have been OAC runners-up, just missing trips to the NCAA championships. Top incoming wrestlers:
NJ HWT State Champion Cody Melton
NJ State Placewinner 2011 Ron Hoover
NJ State Placewinner 2010 Kevin Churchill

Season outlook:
First year head coach Joe Galante had a tough job following in the footsteps of Dave Icenhower, the longtime TCNJ coach, but he stepped in ably and led the team to a 6th place finish with three All-Americans. Two of those All-Americans, Dan Herr and John Darling, are back in 2012-2013 and will form the backbone of what should be a strong team. Also returning are a pair of 2011 NCAA qualifiers in Steve Godine and Brian Broderick. All four of these wrestlers will challenge East Region titles. The incoming class is highlighted by a trio of New Jersey placewinners including last year’s state champion at 285 Cody Melton. TCNJ has been a consistent top 20 team for over 30 years, and that seems like a trend that will continue.

Sports wagering law forces NCAA to remove championships from New Jersey

The 2013 East Region was initially scheduled to be contested at The College of New Jersey in March, but the NCAA has announced the withdrawal of all championship events from the state as a result of the newly passed sports wagering law allowing wagering on college sports. The new site has not been announced yet.
