Barber Promoted to Head Coach at University of the Ozarks

After four years as an assistant at University of the Ozarks, Vinny Barber has been promoted to Head Men’s Wrestling Coach. LeRoy Gardner will remain as Head Women’s Wrestling Coach and Assistant Athletic Director. Barber joined the Eagles for the 2018-2019 season and has helped coach a pair of NCAA qualifiers.


Vinny Barber Promoted To Head Men’s Wrestling Coach

Clarksville, Ark.-Vinny Barber has been promoted to head men’s wrestling coach, it was announced by athletic director Jimmy Clark Tuesday (August 16).

Barber, who just finished his fourth season as the assistant coach, will take over the program for LeRoy Garner. Gardner will turn his focus to the women’s program and remain as the head women’s coach and assistant athletic director.

“Vinny is the right guy to lead this program,” said Clark. “I want to thank LeRoy for the way he built the program and for his tireless effort to serve our student-athletes. Under his leadership, this is a strong program that has seen significant success on the mat and in the classroom. Vinny has played an integral role with all of the achievement and success. He will continue our outstanding tradition. Vinny combines great recruiting skills and coaching knowledge. He loves the university and will give every ounce of effort to continue the success of our program.”

Delaware Valley University seeks applications for the position of Part-Time Assistant Wrestling Coach. It reports to the Head Wrestling Coach. The position involves working weekends, evenings and some holidays. Position SummaryThe position of Assistant Wrestling Coach/Associate Lecturer will hold a 100% appointment at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse. This is a split position with 50% of the appointment in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, reporting directly to UWL’s Head Wrestling Coach, and the other 50% appointment in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science, reporting to the department chairperson.

The Assistant Coach will assist in the management of daily operations of Division III intercollegiate wrestling program competing in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, with responsibilities including, but not limited to, assisting in the planning, recruiting, coaching, developing, implementing, and administering of the wrestling program to meet University and Department objectives. They will also be responsible for various administrative tasks associated with running an intercollegiate wrestling program, potentially including, but not limited to, theplanning of team travel; managing equipment and/or video and technology needs; and coordinating camps. Brockport selects Caleb Garvey

Former Thiel assistant Caleb Garvey has been selected as the next head coach at SUNY-Brockport. Garvey spent the past three seasons at Thiel where he also was a three-year starter for the Tomcats. He takes over the Brockport program from interim coach Bill Jacoutot. Prior to 2021-22, Don Murray had coached the Eagles for 51 seasons.

BROCKPORT, NY — SUNY Brockport Athletic Director Erick Hart announced the hiring of Caleb Garvey as the new head wrestling coach on Thursday. Garvey will be responsible for all aspects of Brockport’s nationally recognized wrestling program.

Mike DeRoehn returns to Lakeland

After a year off from college coaching, Mike DeRoehn has returned as head coach at Lakeland College. DeRoehn previously coached the Muskies from 2010-2014 and spend 2014-2021 as head coach at UW-Platteville. Prior to his first stint at Lakeland DeRoehn was the head coach at UW-Oshkosh from 2005-2010.

Lakeland University has landed a big fish to lead the Muskies men’s wrestling program.

Veteran wrestling coach Mike DeRoehn, a familiar face on the NCAA Division III wrestling scene, is returning to Lakeland as head men’s wrestling coach and director of strength and conditioning for LU athletics.

DeRoehn brings a wealth of experience, highlighted by successful head coach roles at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and UW-Oshkosh in addition to Lakeland.

He also has a passion for helping people, especially student-athletes, maximize their physical fitness. He returns to LU after serving as health & fitness coordinator this past school year for the Two Rivers School District, where his wife, Nicole, is a special education teacher.

“That year off from college coaching provided me a good chance to evaluate some things in my life and just how much I love coaching,” said DeRoehn, who lives with his wife, a 2012 Lakeland graduate, and daughters Madalynn and Audrey in Nicole’s hometown of Two Rivers. “And now to have the opportunity to come full circle with Lakeland and do so with our family living right where we want to be is a special opportunity.

Head Wrestling Coach

The head coach is responsible for all aspects of the Men’s Wrestling program, including, but not limited to: practice preparation, skill instruction, on-court coaching, player development, recruiting, budget management, team travel, scheduling, academic success and student-athlete welfare.
This is a full-time position with a 9.5-month (8/15-5/31) obligation.

Responsible for all matters pertaining to the total operation of the Men’s Wrestling program at SUNY Cortland.

  • Maintain and/or build the sport program that is competitive at the conference level.
  • Recruitment of student athletes: recruit student athletes in accordance with all applicable rules and regulations; recruit an adequate number of student athletes; and recruit student athletes of sufficient skill to maintain quality of the program.
  • Retention of student athletes: assess academic performance of student athletes at least once each semester; ensure academic retention of student athletes minimally mirrors retention rate of the college.
  • Demonstrate effective coaching through content knowledge, practice construction and execution, and the affective dimension (e.g., interpersonal interactions, enthusiasm, respect and rapport). Plan and coordinate effective team practices in preparation for competition; serve as game coach for each contest; instruct student athletes in physical health (strength, conditioning & skill training); instruct individual/team concepts, and safety.

Basford comes north to Wilmington

Limestone assistant/interim head coach Chris Basford has been named head wrestling coach at Wilmington College. Basford also has assistant coaching stints at Nebraska-Omaha and Marysville. He replaces Justin Kihn who had coached the Quakers since the team was reinstated in 2018.

Chris Basford has been named the next head wrestling coach at Wilmington College. 

“Chris has been a quality assistant wrestling coach in a number of very successful programs,” said Senior Director of Athletics Bill Wilson. “We are certain that his experiences and leadership will grow our wrestling program and move us to a place of consistent success. We look forward to Chris joining the Wilmington family.”

Basford comes to Wilmington from Limestone University, an NCAA Division II school in South Carolina, where he served as an assistant wrestling coach for a season before being elevated to Interim Head Coach for the recently concluded 2021-22 academic year. Basford led the Saints to a 10-4 dual record leading the program. Additionally, he guided Majid Corbett and JaQuez Bostic to first-place finishes at the NCAA Division II Super Regional in the 133-pound and 184-pound weight classes as well as Juan Edmonds-Holmes to a runner-up finish and Kevin Radcliff to a third in the 285 and 125-pound weight classes respectively. The Saints finished fifth at the Super Regional and 17th at the NCAA Division II National Tournament. Kevin Radcliff became the first ever 125-pound All American in Limestone history, and Majid Corbett finished sixth after retiring in his semifinals match due to injury.

2022 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans Named

Seven wrestlers were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division III At-Large teams today. Each of the seven were among the 12 wrestlers who had previously been named to the All-District team, making them eligible for selection as Academic All-Americans.

Leading the group are a pair of first team honorees. Jack Heldt of Wabash and Brett Kaliner of Stevens were named first team Academic All-Americans. Heldt was a national runner-up at 197 for Wabash and was the Elite 90 award winner for Division III wrestling. Kaliner was the 149 lbs. NCAA Champion and was a second team honoree in 2021.

Bradan Birt (NCAA Champion, Millikin), Ben Sarasin (NCAA Qualifier, Chicago), and Tyler Shilson (NCAA 3rd, Augsburg) were named to the second team. Birt was also a second team member in 2021, while Sarasin and Shilson received their first honors this year.

Third team honorees include Loras teammates Shane Liegel (NCAA 4th) and Zeke Smith (NCAA Qualifier). Each had previously been honored, as Smith made the first team in 2021 and Liegel was on the second team last season.

Penn College announced Pankil Chander as the Williamsport, Pennsylvania, school’s next head coach. He takes over for Jamie Miller who had the position since the 2017-2018 season. Chander comes to Penn College after two seasons as an assistant at Springfield, and he also had previously coached at Gettysburg and Bloomsburg. Chander wrestled for Wilkes University, graduating in 2017.

Chander comes to Williamsport after spending the previous two seasons as the assistant coach at Springfield College and had stints as an assistant coach at Bloomsburg University and Gettysburg College.

“Pankil is the perfect blend of a wrestling technician with a forward-thinking holistic mindset, which will help maximize our student-athlete’s experience, both in and out competition,” Penn College Interim Director of Athletics Matt Blymier said. “His passion and energy will serve our campus and our community well as we begin the next chapter of Penn College wrestling.”

Swinson takes over Defiance

After a season as the interim head coach at Manchester, Steve Swinson has been named head coach at Defiance College, the Ohio school announced today. Swinson takes over for Chandler Minnard who was the head coach during the 2021-2022 season. Swinson will be the third head coach since the rebirth of the program in 2018. He has extensive high school coaching experience in Indiana to go along with his season at the helm of Manchester.

DIII at U20 & U23 Trials

The U20 and U23 World Team Trials took place this past weekend at Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio. The U20 Trials required qualification to enter, while the U23 tournament was open. In the U20 Freestyle tournament Ben Kawczynski finished in 4th place at 125kg in the challenge tournament. In Greco-Roman, Tyler Hannah won a 4 man round robin at 87kg to earn a spot in the finals where he fell in two matches to Oregon State’s Kodiak Stephens. Fellow WIAC wrestler Jared Stricker had a similar result, dropping a pair of finals matches to finish second. Gary Powell won the challenge tournament at 130kg but also dropped both finals matches.

In the U23 age group in Greco-Roman, Powell again finished in 2nd place at heavyweight, while Sam Braswell finished in 2nd place at 55kg. Other DIII placewinners are listed below, including 2022 NCAA champion Cornell Beachem who placed 4th at 87kg.

There were 770 entries in U23 Freestyle, compared to just 158 in U23 Greco-Roman, and the competition was significantly stiffer. No DIII wrestlers placed in the top eight in freestyle (Unless I missed someone. Leave a comment).

Bostwick named Elmira head coach

CJ Bostwick has been named head men’s wrestling coach at Elmira College. He takes over for Cody Griswold who coached the men and women at Elmira this past season and will stay on as the women’s head coach. Bostwick wrestled at Heidelberg and coached at the University of Mary prior to arriving at Elmira. Most recently, he was an assistant coach at St. Francis de Sales School in Toledo, Ohio.


CJ Bostwick Hired to Lead Men’s Wrestling Program

ELMIRA, N.Y. – Charles “CJ” Bostwick III has been chosen from a pool of candidates to lead the Men’s Wrestling program at Elmira, Director of Athletics Rhonda Faunce announced last week. Bostwick takes over for Cody Griswold, who will continue to serve as the head coach of the women’s program at Elmira.

Bostwick comes to Elmira after spending the past 10 months at St. Francis de Sales School in Toledo, Ohio where he served as an educator in computer literacy and applications, along with his duties as the head assistant wrestling coach at the all-boys college preparatory institution. Along with his educational duties, Bostwick mentored a handful of athletes while working with the wrestling staff to assist in roster-building strategies, facilitating individual workouts, along with demonstrating techniques. During his short time at St. Francis de Sales, he successfully mentored one NHSCA All-American. Additionally, the coaching staff produced a Second Team All-Three Rivers Athletic Conference wrestler, one district qualifier, and one district alternate as well. Five wrestlers earned All-Academic Three Rivers Athletic Conference recognition.

DIII World Team Trials Results

Two DIII wrestlers placed in the top four at the World Team Trials challenge tournament this past weekend. Former Augsburg wrestler Ryan Epps was the only DIII wrestler to win more than once, and he finished in 4th place at 82kg in Greco-Roman. Current UW-Platteville wrestler Tyler Hannah also finished 4th in a six man bracket at 87kg in Greco-Roman. Mike Tortorice, Duncan Lee, and Tom Foote all each won once on the weekend. Lee’s win came against fellow DIII athlete Jason Carter.
