Wartburg is the clear favorite once again as the Knights attempt to make it 16 IIAC team championships in a row as the host team this Thursday. With a 22-0 dual meet record and eight wrestlers in the latest d3wrestle.com rankings, they are poised to do just that. Aaron Wernimont, Romeo Djoumessi, and TJ Miller all will be defending their titles from 2007 with Jake Helvey hoping to improve on his 2007 runner up finish.

Along with the trio of Wartburg defending champs, Jestin Hulegaard of Buena Vista is the only other returning champion this season, though runners-up Chris Heilman and Pat McCauley of Cornell, Alec Bonander and John Miller of Luther, and Jay Figgins of Loras are all hoping to make the jump one step higher on the podium and take home a conference championship.

Waynesburg University announces hirings of Ron Headlee as head wrestling coach, John Yates as assistant coach

WAYNESBURG (Feb. 15) – The Waynesburg University Department of Athletics announced the hiring of Ron Headlee as head wrestling coach Friday. He will assume the head coaching duties following next weekend’s competition at the NCAA Midwest Regionals in Crawfordsville, Ind.

Joining Headlee on the Yellow Jackets’ coaching staff will be John Yates, with whom Headlee worked as an assistant at Waynesburg Central High School in recent years.

“I’m elated to announce the hiring of not one, but two gentlemen that have such outstanding reputations in Western Pennsylvania with their wrestling backgrounds and coaching experiences,” said Director of Athletics Rudy Marisa.

Headlee brings an impressive record of success on the mat from around the Greene County area. The Waynesburg native started his coaching career at nearby Jefferson-Morgan High School, serving as head coach from 1988-97. While with the Rockets, he compiled an impressive 111-25-1 record and won five Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) team championships. Headlee also coached a total of 24 WPIAL champions, 15 state place winners and seven state championships.

“My two high school coaches, Joe Ayersman and Ralph Adamson, were alumni of Waynesburg, and I feel privileged to get the opportunity to keep a great tradition going,” said Headlee. “I am fortunate to bring with me a great assistant in John Yates, whom I feel will be a great asset to the Waynesburg program.”

Following his tenure at J-M, Headlee served as a junior high coach and assistant coach for the Waynesburg Central High School wrestling teams. While with the Raiders, he helped coach Coleman Scott, a three-time Pennsylvania state champion and three-time NCAA All-American at Oklahoma State.

Headlee graduated from Messiah College in 1982 with a degree in Health and Physical Education. He is a member of the Hall of Fame at Messiah after registering a career-record of 101-16-1 and earning All-American honors his senior season. (d3wrestle.com note – Headlee was the first NCAA All-American at Messiah)

He resides in Waynesburg with his wife, Karen, and their two children, Drew and Ethan, both of whom wrestle at the University of Pittsburgh.

Yates comes to the University following a successful stint as a head coach at Waynesburg Central, registering a record of 140-43 in 10 seasons. While with the Raiders he coached 15 WPIAL individual champions, 20 state place winners and six state champions.

Yates, a native of Cranberry Twp., Pa., graduated from Pitt in 1989 with a degree in Science Education following his four-year career with the Panthers’ wrestling team.

Travis Lang, a junior 133 from Augsburg College, is the d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week. A four time North Dakota state champ for Bismarck High School, Lang has compiled a 27-1 record in his first season for the Auggies. Over the past week, the fourth ranked Lang pinned #3 Jacob Helvey of Wartburg and defeated #5 Jordan Kolinsky of Wisconsin-La Crosse. His win against Kolinsky helped Augsburg avenge a previous defeat to UW-La Crosse in the semifinals of the NWCA National Duals last month.

This season, Lang has won titles at the Dragon Open, Husky Open, Sunshine Open, and Red Raider Invitatiopnal. He transferred to Augsburg this season from the University of Minnesota where he most recently fashioned a 25-16 record with 10 falls and competed in the 2006 Big Ten Championships. Currently on a 25 match winning streak, Lang and the Auggies next take the mat Saturday at the North Country Open hosted by St. John’s before finishing the regular season against Wisconsin-Stevens Point the following Friday.

Milestones

1

This week, two teams have the opportunity to reach significant program milestones.  Simpson College stands one win away from 400 dual meet victories in their history.  Simpson had wrestling from 1924-1928 before disbanding until 1959.  The team has been at 399 wins for a while now, as they hope to snap a six match losing streak against Loras College on Thursday night in Dubuque.  Regardless of the outcome of that match, the team should reach 400 wins, as their last competition before the IIAC Championships is a home match against winless Central College.

The second team with a milestone in site passed 400 wins ages ago.  Springfield College is now going for win number 900 in their quest to join Oklahoma State, Oregon State, and Iowa State as the only programs to achieve that milestone.  After dropping their last match to TCNJ, Springfield goes for 900 again on Saturday at conference foe Trinity.  Should Trinity prevail, Springfield will have to wait until next season to get number 900.
