Ron Peterson announced his resignation effective at season’s end from Simpson College. This is the second Iowa Conference coach to announce his resignation this week. Release below.
Simpson College Head Wrestling Coach Ron Peterson To Resign At End Of Season
Simpson College athletic director John Sirianni has announced the resignation of Storm head wrestling coach Ron Peterson. Peterson also served as assistant athletic director and assistant professor of physical education. He is in his 13th season with the Storm. His resignation is effective upon the conclusion of the 2008 season.
Sirianni said he was surprised and saddened to hear Peterson would be leaving.
“Ron has meant so much to the Storm athletic program over the years,” Sirianni said. Â “As a coach teacher, and administrator, he has represented the quality and values so important to this college, but more importantly he has touched the lives of hundreds of student-athletes. He’s a strong administrator, a fierce competitor, and a great friend. We’ll all miss him and wish him the best.”
Peterson said he has been proud to be a part of many great moments in Storm wrestling and Simpson athletic history.
“I want to thank the Simpson community for their steadfast support of me during my years at Simpson,” Peterson said. “It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to work with some of the best athletes in the country. These guys are tremendous individuals and I am very proud to say I was their coach. I will miss every one of them and the many others who have helped me during my career. It is time for my family and I to ride a different trail. It has been fun.”
In 13 seasons at the helm, Peterson has become the winningest coach in the history of the Storm program, compiling a dual record of 195-105-2 (a .649 winning percentage). A Simpson wrestler has qualified for nationals 41 times during Peterson’s watch with 12 earning 19 All-American certificates. Â Cory Christensen (1998) and Nick Ackerman (2001) won national championships. Academically, seven Simpson wrestlers earned Scholar All-American honors 13 times from the National Wrestling Coaches Assocation. Â Ackerman’s victory was chosen by the NCAA as one of the organization’s “25 Defining Moments” to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the NCAA.
Peterson’s Storm finished third in their first appearance at the NWCA/Cliff Keen Division III National Duals in 2004 and were eighth at the meet in 2006. Simpson set the school record for most dual wins in a season with 28 in 2003-04. Â Three of Simpson’s top four performances (fifth in 1998, fifth in 2004, and sixth in 2005, ninth in 2006) at the NCAA Tournament occurred during Peterson’s reign.
In 15 years on the prep level with Clarksville and Cedar Rapids Prairie High School, Peterson posted a 177-25-3 record. He led Clarksville to the 1989 and 1990 Class 1A state dual deet Championships as well as the 1991 Class 1 A traditonal state title. Peterson’s Prairie squads won the state 3A dual meet championship in 1994 and the 1995 Class 3A traditional state title. He was named Coach of the Year by the Iowa High School Athletic Association in both Class 1A (1988) and Class 3A (1994).
A national search will begin immediately to find Peterson’s successor.
The Match of the Week this week is the Pete Willson Wheaton Invitational hosted by Wheaton College today and tomorrow. This top late season tournament is one of the best small school events in all of college wrestling, bringing together a good number of top teams and individuals. Number three ranked Wisconsin-La Crosse heads the field, but other tough teams will brave the ice and snow to get to King Arena for the tournament. #6 Heidelberg, #9 North Central, and #10 Wisconsin-Whitewater are other top ten teams competing. Other teams in the top 30 are Elmhurst, Messiah, and Olivet. Along with these Division III teams, Division II Wisconsin-Parkside, Truman State, and Indianapolis will vie for the team title.
Numerous wrestlers ranked in the latest d3wrestle.com individual rankings should be competing in this NCAA tuneup as well as others who have done well at the tournament in the past. 125 could see a rematch of last year’s final between Vallejo of Manchester and Oster of Elmhurst. Oster won the title at Wheaton, but Vallejo got revenge at the NCAA tournament.
Johnson of North Central and Kolinski of La Crosse could also repeat last year’s final, won by Johnson, but do not overlook Shane Perkey of Indianapolis.
Sanchez (Heidelberg) and Batista (Whitewater) are the top two at 141. Spence of MSJ and Kastel of Elmhurst look to be the top two d3 wrestlers at 149, but Lahar of Olivet and Mauseth of La Crosse could be looking to pull an upset.
Joe Pflug goes for his 3rd straight Wheaton title at 157, and Brew of Olivet will look to avenge an earlier loss this season.
Tim Palmer of La Crosse is a heavy favorite at 165, though Zempel of Messiah, Hoover of Maranatha, and Ben Youel of North Central could challenge.
Chelf of La Crosse at 174 may be the top wrestler in Division III this year and Vanderhyde of Olivet hopes to get a rematch of last year’s NCAA final; unranked, but undefeated, Boltz (Wheaton) may look to have a top performance for the home crowd.
Gabe Youel of North Central won the tournament last season at 184, and Zabel of La Crosse looks to be the top challenger from D3.
197 is a top heavy weight class with Fogliano (Heidelberg), Hartt (Lakeland), Schmalfeldt (Oshkosh), Moore (Lax), and Schmidt (Whitewater) all in the mix.
To round it out at 285, there is Rutledge of Knox who placed 3rd in the NCAA last year, Laurent (Lax), Sutter (Lakeland), and Evans (Whitewater) just in the last d3wrestle.com top ten, but they will be challenged by Corsello (Elmhurst), Katzmann (Etown), and Campbell (Wheaton).

Moving quickly, Buena Vista elevated assistant coach Sevond Cole to the head position for next season following Mark Schwab’s announcement of his resignation. See release below.
Cole Promoted to Head Coach of BVU Wrestling Team
Storm Lake, Iowa – Buena Vista Director of Athletics, Jan Travis, has announced that current assistant wrestling coach, Sevond Cole, will be promoted to head coach following the conclusion of this season. Cole will replace Mark Schwab who announced his resignation on Tuesday, effective May 31, 2008.
“I feel Sevond is an excellent choice,†Travis said. “He’s served as an assistant with the program under two great mentors (Mark Schwab and Al Baxter), and I have the confidence that he can take over the program and carry on the strong BVU wrestling tradition.â€
Cole returned this season for his second stint with the Beaver wrestling program after having served as an assistant under Baxter from 2001-06. He spent last season as a volunteer wrestling coach, as well as a middle school science instructor, in the Griswold School District.
“Having been part of the wrestling program for more than a decade, you can imagine how excited I am to have the opportunity to continue the strong wrestling tradition that we have here at Buena Vista,†Cole stated. “I feel blessed to have worked with two amazing coaches in my years as an assistant coach – most recently Mark Schwab and Al Baxter before that. I have learned a lot from both coaches and will continue to hold the bar high for BVU wrestling.â€
Prior to joining the BVU staff in 2001, Cole was a two-time All-American for Baxter and the Beavers (1999 and 2000) at 174 pounds. He also captured a conference championship in 1999, while also being tabbed a Scholar All-American in 2000.
“I personally believe Sevond will do a great job†Schwab noted. A few reasons that come to mind are that he truly cares about BVU, he was a 2-time All-American here, and a graduate always personalizes the roots that run deep in your efforts to bring out the best in the athletes and a program. He is not looking for something else. This is what he wants – a “dream job” so to speak. I also think that what he learned from Coach Baxter, and hopefully myself, has prepared him to run a top flight program.â€
“Needless to say, we are thrilled that Coach Cole has agreed to become our new head coach,†said BVU President Fred Moore. “He was an outstanding student-athlete in every sense of the word and has contributed mightily as an assistant coach. He is the perfect person to lead our program into the future.â€

Schwab to Step Down as Coach at Season’s End
Storm Lake, Iowa – After guiding the Buena Vista University wrestling program for the past three-plus seasons, Director of Athletics, Jan Travis, has announced that head coach Mark Schwab will step down as coach of the Beavers effective May 31, 2008.
“I would like to thank Coach Schwab for the efforts and leadership he’s shown and put forth while guiding the Beaver wrestling program over these last four years,†Travis said. “We hate to see him go, but want to wish him the best in all of his future endeavors.â€
Schwab became just the second coach to lead the Beavers since the start of the 1978-79 season when he was hired in 2004 following the retirement of legendary coach, Al Baxter. To this point, the 2007 Iowa Conference Coach of the Year has seen his squads improve from a pair of seventh-place finishes to last season’s fourth-place finish at the Iowa Conference Championships. The same can also be said at the NCAA Tournament, where his squads placed 30th and 21st, respectively, in his first two seasons, to a seventh-place standing a year ago.
Schwab says he will step down with plenty of good memories from his time guiding the Beavers.
“There were sure a lot of good moments here,†Schwab said. “What I consider best moments are small things overall – like guys breaking thru, winning hard fought matches. I loved it when we could celebrate as a team.â€
BVU’s seventh-place team finish at the 2007 National Tournament was the program’s highest since placing fifth back in 2002. BVU’s fourth-place finish during last year’s Iowa Conference Championships was its highest since taking fourth in 2001.
To this point, Schwab has coached one individual conference champion and five All-Americans during his tenure, while also having a pair of wrestlers earn Scholar All-American accolades and one earn Academic All-Conference honors.
“It was a very challenging experience, and there is an awful lot to being a head coach in any sport; much more than most would think,†Schwab added. “With the three recruiting classes we had in, it was interesting to see just how much an individual differs from the next but yet how predicable we can all be. This experience was a hands-on dealing with people in all their stages of highs and lows. It’s personal education for future endeavors.â€
“We are very sad to see Coach Schwab step down,†said BVU President Fred Moore. “He has led our wrestling program with tremendous distinction and character. At the same time, I understand his desire to start a new chapter in his life and wish him well. BVU has a proud wrestling tradition, and we will move swiftly to name a new head coach to lead us into the future.â€
A search for a replacement will begin immediately.
