Fantasy Wrestling Game

78

Here is a picks game for the 2008 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships.

Rules:

1.  You get 5000 points.  Each wrestler is worth a certain number of points based on their ranking.  You cannot go over 5000 when making your team but under is fine.

2.  You do not have to pick a wrestler from every weight if you do not want to.  You may may only choose a maximum of one wrestler per weight.

3.  You score points only when your wrestler places in the National tournament.  The point value you score corresponds with the price of each ranking.  ie.  #1 ranked wrestler costs 1000 pts.  1st place earns 1000 pts.; #2 rank costs 900 pts, 2nd place earns 900 points

4.  Team with the most points wins.

5. Tiebreaking criteria:
a. Most total NCAA champions on your team
b. Most total All-Americans
c. Team with most wrestlers to win at least one match
d. Tiebreaker to be determined later (if necessary)

Enter your team in the comments section of this post by 12pm Eastern on March 5th, 2008.  This is just to track your entries.  It is your responsibility to compute your own score and leave that score in the comment section of a future post after the NCAA tournament.  If you would like to discuss the game, please do so in the forum, as I will ruthlessly delete all comments on this post not comprised solely of team entries.

NEWA Tournament Preview

d3wrestle.com New England Wrestling Association Preview
Johnson & Wales started slow this year, missing some good wrestlers and dropping some matches while underperforming in some early events. However, they have come on very strong and have the pieces in place for another NEWA run to the top. Winning the first New England title in team history last season, they are ranked first in the last New England poll and have three top-ranked wrestlers in Bastante (125), Crespo (197), and DeDeyn (285).

Roger Williams and Rhode Island stand as the best challengers in the quest to dethrone JWU. Each has some firepower at the top and the depth to sustain a high point total. Rhode Island is having one of its best seasons ever, featuring national #1 141 lb. Michael Bonora, while RWU has less top level talent but a lot of depth. The top teams would also be wise to watch for Bridgewater State and Springfield College fresh off its 900th dual meet win.

Stephen Valastro (USM, 133), Bonora, Frank Cammisa (BSC, 149), Elliot Smith (Springfield, 184), and Crespo all return to attempt to win another New England championship. In the latest NWCA poll of February 12th, six New Englanders appear in the top ten along with two teams in JWU at 13 and Rhode Island at 22.

Great Lakes Regional Tournament Preview

Augsburg is hoping to run away with the Great Lakes title for yet another season. Last year, they won nine weight classes here, missing the sweep only by a last second takedown in the 285 lb. final. The Auggies have a new coach, but he is a familiar face in long time assistant Sam Barber. Barber took over for Jeff Swenson after Augsburg won their 10th NCAA championship last year, putting five in the finals and having nine All-Americans. This year, they are ranked #2 and are led by #1 ranked Travis Lang.

The strongest challenger to Augsburg will likely be North Central College, currently ranked #9 and led by a tough trio in 2x All-American Adam Johnson (133) and the Youel brothers (165 & 184), and they are fresh off their first CCIW championship in a decade. #15 Elmhurst also will factor in the team race with All-American Jake Oster (125), a solid middle of Kastel, Katz, and Doan, and freshman Mark Corsello at the top.

Of Augsburg’s nine champions from last year, Seth Flodeen (125), George Lynaugh (174), Robbie Gotreau (184), and Wally O’Connor (197) return. Lynaugh and Gotreau have swapped weights since last year. Knox heavyweight Jaran Rutledge returns to defend his title of a year ago and hopes to improve on last year’s 3rd place finish at the NCAA tournament.

Wisconsin Conference Tournament Preview

d3wrestle.com Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Preview (PDF Version)

Wisconsin-La Crosse has been dominant in the Wisconsin conference for some time now, winning each of the last 10 WIAC championships. This year, they take their typically strong team to Appleton West High School, where Lawrence will be the host. Ranked in the top five all year, UW-Lax is anchored by top ranked Tim Palmer (165) and Josh Chelf (174). Both have been wire to wire #1 ranked wrestlers and have yet to lose to Division III opponents.

As with last year, Stevens Point is the second best team in the conference with a formidable set of upper weights in the 165-174-184-197 punch of Wozniak, Bath, Engelland, and Bollig. Also greatly improved since former UW-Lax coach Tim Fader took over is Whitewater. They have climbed to #11 in the latest poll, giving the conference three teams in the top 11 and five of seven overall in the top 30.

Returning to defend their titles from 2007 are Calhoun of Stevens Point at 125, Kolinski at 133, Palmer at 165, Chelf at 174, and Laurent at 285 (all from UW-Lax). The NWCA has 13 WIAC athletes ranked in the February 12th rankings, and several weights have more than one, making for some interesting matchups come Sunday.

IIAC Underway

Action is underway at the IIAC tournament.  Follow along on the Tournament Website.

Biggest upsets through the quarterfinals are Taylor over Miille at 125 and Bartlett over Hulegaard at 133.  Rough morning for Buena Vista lightweights.

UPDATE 3:17EST: Word is Wartburg has 7 of the first 9 weights in the finals (Struthers and Kreman in consolation)

Metropolitan Conference Tournament Preview

Preview on host team Wilkes’ site

Dave Icenhower has had the TCNJ Lions in the top 20 of every national tournament since he took the helm, and the team has won 24 Metropolitan titles over the 29 years of the conference, including last year. This season, TCNJ is ranked 17th as a team by the NWCA and hopes to defend its Metro title with the likes of returning national qualifiers Ray Sarinelli and Greg Osgoodby.

Nipping at the heels of TCNJ will be balanced squads from Wilkes University and NYU. NYU is ranked ahead of the Lions, but fell 30-6 in an early season dual meet. Wilkes dropped a narrow 20-18 dual at the end of last month. King’s and York are also in the national rankings and have some excellent individuals, while Centenary was previously ranked and could make some noise.

Back to defend their titles from 2007 are Kyle Flickinger (York) at 125, NCAA champ Dave Morgan (King’s) at 133, and Greg Osgoodby (TCNJ) at 174. Sarinelli of TCNJ was also a national qualifier last year at 133, and Mike Gummerson (Centenary) was a national qualifier at 125 who has moved up to 133 this season, making 133 one of the more interesting weights in the tournament.

Empire Conference Preview

SUNY Cortland leads the charge in the Empire Conference as the defending champions and #5 ranked team nationally.  Cortland boasts 4 individuals ranked in the top 10 by d3wrestle.com, and most of their lineup should have a reasonable shot to make the conference finals.

The 8 team conference should produce plenty of challengers both from the three other nationally ranked teams and some strong individuals throughout.  #18 Ithaca has a strong young team including returning national qualifier Willy Horwath.  The Bombers should be able to mount a significant challenge for the team title.  In addition #24 SUNY Brockport, led by multiple All American Shaheim Bradshaw looks to maintain the status of perennial powerhouse.  The conference also welcomes newcomers in #26 Messiah and a Lycoming team that had been in the rankings most of the season.

Five champions return to the conference.  Both Leblancs from Cortland are up a weight from last year and McInally (RIT), Bradshaw (Brockport), and Hiffa (Oneonta) round out the defending champions.

d3wrestle.com Midwest Regional Preview (PDF Version)

Delaware Valley has the longest trip to the Midwest Regional at Wabash this year and has yet to face most of the teams in the tournament, but they are still the favored team with a talented roster that hopes to defend their 2007 Regional title and win their second championship since joining the region last season. The Aggies have five wrestlers in the d3wrestle.com top ten and three more holding down contender and honorable mention slots.

Challenging the #4 ranked Delaware Valley squad is #27 Olivet with defending national runner-up Kyle Vanderhyde and #3 ranked Jason Brew as well as Mount St. Joseph, led by new coach Casey Stouffer and 2x All-American Elliot Spence, now down at 149 after two years at 157. Case Western reserve has a few wrestlers with finals potential including 2007 qualifier David Manoogian at 141 and Drew Gardella at 149. Also worth mentioning is Tri-State University, now in their first year of NCAA postseason competition.

Four champions return to this region, though only 2 of those at the same weight where they were victorious a year ago. Eracleo Vallejo of Manchester will defend his 125 lb. title, as will the previously mentioned Vanderhyde at 174. Spence drops to 149, while 184 lb. champ Daron Cruickshank moves down two weights from 184 to 165.

Ever since Jason Miller came to Heidelberg, good things have happened to the team.  The career wins leader for the Student Princes, Miller is in his sixth season as the head man in Tiffin.  His team is ranked sixth in the latest NWCA poll and plans to defend its OAC tournament title after retaking the dual meet championship it lost to John Carroll last season.  Ohio Northern finished second in the OAC regular season, one match better than John Carroll, the only other OAC team to break the .500 mark in conference and overall competition.

The conference has a good number of returning champs, as only Ryan Summers (John Carroll) and Bryan Kmetz (Baldwin-Wallace) were seniors last year.  The champs at 125, 133, 141, 149, 157, and 174 all return, though Joe Pflug (Heidelberg) has moved up to 157 and Anthony Coleman (ONU) has followed suit and gone to 165.  That leaves Penny, Pizzuro, Sanchez, and Plowman to defend their 2007 titles.

Centennial Conference Tournament Preview

6

d3wrestle.com Centennial Conference Preview (PDF Version Here)

After five consecutive Centennial Championships, the run of Ursinus College atop the Centennial Conference could be ending in a year when they host the tournament in the face of a strong push from the newly invigorated Merchant Marine Academy. Two years of strong recruiting have the Mariners poised to make a run at the top of the conference. Though not nearly as high profile as the Iowa Conference, the Centennial stands to improve on last year’s total of two All-Americans, even though both Andrew Winfield of McDaniel and Matt Loesch of Muhlenberg no longer suit up for their respective teams.

The champs at each of the first three weights return, though each has moved up to the next weight this year as Phil Greene (USMMA), Billy Hall (Muhlenberg), and Rob Kein (Muhlenberg) will try their luck at the next class up. Brandon MacWhinnie (Stevens Institute) also moves up from 165 to 174 to seek that elusive All-America honor after missing out three years in a row. Returning to the same weight are champs Matt Shank (149) and Andrew Goldstein (157) of Gettysburg, along with Eric Fishel (184) of Johns Hopkins and Joseph Tartar (285) of Muhlenberg. Stephen Kingsland (125) of Ursinus was the lone wildcard selection this year and has yet to be beat in an abbreviated season at 125. In total, 9 of the 11 qualifiers from last year return.
