The Bombers brought in yet another strong class of Freshmen and transfers who will look to fill some spots that have opened up since last season. With a good balance of youth and experience the Bombers look to take back the Empire conference championship, while focusing on a top 4 finish at the NCAA Championships.

Assistant Coaches: Bryan Kmetz and Joe Heiland

2009-2010 Dual Meet Record: 5-13
Returning Qualifier: Andrew Scavuzzo (2009)

Top returning starters:
133 Phil Payne 15-10
157/165 Korey Leonhard 17-12 4th OAC
174 Andrew Scavuzzo 17-5 3x OAC placewinner (1st in 2009)

Top incoming wrestlers:
133 Andrew Taylor State Qualifier
157 Tyler Blaine
Tyreese Brown
Tim Hamm
Ty Bromund

Season Outlook:
2010-2011 should see a better lineup for B-W than in the past few years.  2009 qualifier Andrew Scavuzzo returns to anchor the lineup at 174 that will take on a tough schedule including the Desert Duals and some Division II duals.  Scavuzzo headlines a trio of senior OAC placewinners that include Tristan Stoll, who was 20-4 last year and Korey Leonard, 4th place finisher in the 2010 OAC tournament.  With a veteran lineup and some help from the incoming class, the OAC tournament place, as well as the dual meet record, should improve in 2011.

NCAA Qualifier Allocations

5

A few changes from last year in the qualifier allocations.  The big change is Delaware Valley taking five qualifiers from the Midwest Region over to the Metro conference.  Other shifting was adding one to Great Lakes and taking one away from Wisconsin.  Everything else remains the same.  The NCAA allocates qualifiers based on teams, participants, and All-Americans and uses the past three years of data, weighting the previous year at 50% and the two years prior each at 25%.

Additionally, the 2011 NCAA Championship will have 170, rather than 160 qualifiers.  After the automatic qualifiers and wildcards are determined, wrestlers will be added to make sure all brackets have at least 16 wrestlers, and historical data will be used to determine the allocation of any remaining qualifiers until there are 170 competitors.

Top returning starters with accomplishments: Nathan Fitzenreider, Andrew Zobac, Joby Bodi,

Top incoming wrestlers:
Tom Ambrose (IL SQ)
Michael Glenn (IL SQ)
Andrew Hiller (IL SQ)
Adam Kendall (IL Sect. Qualifier)
Trevor Maus (MI State placer)
Devin Milheim (MI 2x State Placer)
Anthony Myrick (IL State Placer)
Eric Oyster (IL 2x State Placer)
Nick Santos (Sect. Qualifier)
David Scarano (Sect. Qualifier)
Josh Toton

Season outlook:
North Central begins 2010-2011 looking for their fourth straight CCIW championship, but they will have to do it without 3x All-American and career wins leader Gabe Youel.  He, along with All-American John Starzyk and national qualifier Cowan Brown, graduated, leaving openings on what will prove to be a young team with only three returning starters.  Tops among those is national qualifier (and NCAA #2 seed) Nathan Fitzenreider who hopes to bounce back from a disappointing NCAA tournament last season.  Even though the lineup will be young, the incoming class features at least seven state qualifiers and placewinners who will fight for time in the Cardinals lineup.  Head Coach Kevin Bratland has had an All-American in each of his years as a head coach, and he’s got a great chance to continue that streak in 2011 at La Crosse.

Gage Pederson FR 149 (MI State Runner-Up 140)
James Myers RSSO 157/65 (Kent St Transfer, 2xOH State Finalist)
Parker Lovell FR 165/74 (MI State Champ 171)
Justin Leonard JR 197 (Muskegon CC Transfer, 2xJUCO NQ)

Season outlook:
With six regional placewinners back, Olivet has a strong team already, and the addition of three good transfers will be an additional help.  One thing that will help the Comets as much as anything is the departure of Delaware Valley for the Metro Conference.  They took some wildcard slots with them, but the road to a Regional championship just got a bit easier for the stronger teams remaining in the Midwest Region.  National qualifier Lahar is back in his last chance to capture that elusive All-American award, and he is flanked in the lineup by a pair of Regional 3rd place winners in Wilson and Mena.  Each of those two, however, could have some strong incoming wrestlers to deal with as they seek to retain their starting spots.  It is not a terrible problem for Olivet to have, as whoever makes the cut at certain weights will have proven himself before he faces outside competition.

141/149 Eric Harrison 3rd Mass All State, 5th New Englands.

Season outlook:
Despite the loss of All-American John Marsh and 4x NCAA Qualifier Frank Cammisa, the Bears have a good chance to improve on last year’s six win season.  Seven returning starters, including four NEWA placewinners, are back and will be aided by a recruiting class featuring three high school New England placewinners and other state placers.  One other boost the lineup for Bridgewater State is 2009 133 lb. NEWA runner-up Kenny Francis who plans to drop to 125 this season.

Mitch Hackett: 157 Iowa state place winner
Casey Young: transfer, 165 Iowa state place winner

Tanner Erdman: 184 Nebraska state place winner
Others: Jordan Howell, IA; Kody Havens, IA; Jimmy Thomsen, IA; Taylor Witzel, IA; Zach Edler, IA; Jared Bevins, IA

Season outlook:
Four IIAC placewinners return for Simpson as they try to move up in the conference standings.  Aiding in that efford is the addition of 16 new freshmen, nine of whom were state placewinners in high school.  That will help raise the level in the practice room and create competition for starting spots that will result in a better finish in 2010-2011.  Getting a lineup with ten competitive wrestlers on the mat is the first step toward success, and Simpson appears to be well on their way, even in the toughest conference in Division III.

Top incoming wrestlers: James Roach, FY, 149, Alex Evan, FY, 149, Elliot Courchain, 174 transfer, Dylan McDonough, 184, FY.

Season outlook:
With all the important pieces back from last year, St. Olaf is headed in a positive direction.  Neither Josef Waples nor Justin Skillings appeared in the last d3wrestle.com rankings before the Great Lakes Regional last year, but each made up for the oversight by surprising some and qualifying for the NCAA tournament.  Now, both are back and won’t be sneaking up on anyone this year.  Also back is Regional 5th place Ryan Timmerman as part of ten total returning starters for the Oles.  Going three deep at most weight classes in 2010-2011, Head Coach Sean Ahrar  will be looking to improve the dual meet record while aiming for a top five finish at the always tough Great Lakes Regional Tournament.

133 Mike Trask – 1x New England Qualifier

Season outlook:
Plymouth State University returns 9 starters for the 2010-11 season.  This season the team welcomes back Junior Dustin Rudy (Conference Placer 15-11 Record in 2009 @ 165) and Sophomore Cody Oliverio (14-7 in 2009 @ 157) who were injured last year.  With four wrestlers switching weights this year (Femi Wheeler dropping from 149 to 141, Cody Oliverio moving from 157 to 149, Seth Carter moving from 165 to 174, and Jesse Bilodeau moving from 174 to 184), the lineup will look a little different for the Panthers, but having nine starters back should allow for another winning season.  Now in his fourth season, head coach Tommy Prairie is hoping that the return of the injured wrestlers as well as the addition of some good incoming freshmen will allow Plymouth State to have NEWA Tournament success to go along with a winning record.

Season outlook:
Ohio Northern rode two high placewinners to a top ten finish last year, and both return to try to repeat the feat in 2011.  Joining them are four other starters in a veteran lineup that won the OAC regular season title and was third at the conference championship.  Kyle Kwiat turned in a fabulous freshman season that netted a fourth place finish and the d3wrestle.com Freshman of the Year Award.  Now, Kwiat and defending champ Luke Miller lead the team into the new season.  In addition to the returning wrestlers, a solid freshman class enters, headlined by a pair of Ohio state placewinners.

174       Matt Transue PA 8th
184       Cliff Farrell NJ SQ
285       Jonathan Slack NJ 3rd
285       Mike Shannon NJ SQ

Season outlook:
Seven seniors graduated from last years team including All-Americans Frank Heffernan (174 in 09’) and Zach Pizarro (197).  Three time conference runner-up heavyweight Andrew Feldman also graduated.  The Colonels do return three conference runner-ups in 125 Scott Mantua, 149 Anthony Dattolo and 2009 runner-up Buddy Gouger.  Expect the Colonels to have a very balanced line-up with some youth in the upper weights.  Nearly 30 new wrestlers join the team this year, and half made at least a state tournament in their high school careers.  Depth will certainly be a strength on a team with 50 on the roster, so whichever ten wrestlers make the lineup will have had to work hard to be there to compete in a very tough Metro conference.

2009 OAC Runner-Up Joe Spooner (Ohio Northern)

Season outlook:
Two returning NCAA qualifiers (one of whom is a 2x AA) will lead a Mount Union team that only lost three starters to graduation.  Mark Hawald has been building up the Purple Raiders since he took the helm three years ago, and they are poised to have their best season in recent memory.  They should be able to field a lineup with six past OAC placewinners in their quest to beat Heidelberg and Ohio Northern for the top spot in the conference.  No less than nine Ohio state qualifying freshmen will bolster the experienced lineup and push the returning starters for mat time.  The top wrestler is 197 lb. Bill Schindel who has moved from 8th place in 2009 to 7th in 2010.  He will be looking to move even higher up the podium, and hopes to be joined there by some teammates.

149 Jon Stillo 2010 True Second in Metro, 2009 3rd in Metro
157 Owen Vernon 2009 Metropoltian True Second NCAA First Alternate
165 Matt Regan 2010 2nd place, 2009 2nd place Metropolitan Conference

Top incoming wrestlers (including transfers) with accomplishments:
John Harvey – 5th NJ
Chris Burdge – 6th NJ
Chris Norrell – Tranfer Rutgers 5th NJ
Matt Santini – Transfer Rider University NJ SQ
JD Zitone – Transfer Delval College 2nd NY

Centenary got their first All-American last year when transfer William Livingston took to the mats late last year and put a scare in the eventual champ at 133 before storming back to take 3rd.  This year, he will be gunning for a title to give Centenary another program first.  Coach John Garriques has been recruiting New Jersey hard and has assembled a strong team to compete in the tough Metropolitan Conference.  Five Metro placewinners return and will be joined by a pair of New Jersey state placewinner freshman and three strong transfers.  TCNJ has been on top in New Jersey in DIII for a long time, but maybe Centenary can start to challenge that dominance.

Returning Qualifiers and All-Americans: Mileski, Schulte, and Engelland

Number of returning wrestlers who competed in your 2010 national qualifier:8

Top incoming wrestlers:
Dylan Clucas
Jeff Erickson-WI State Champion
Lance Fabry
Brad Kuehn-MN State Qualifier
Bill Langford-WI State Qualifier
Ben Thome-3rd @ WI State

Season outlook:
UWSP views the 10-12 dual season and 28th place finish at nationals last year as a disappointment, and they are planning to improve on both marks this season.  Led by senior captain Ben Engelland, a 4th place finisher last March, the team should be able to post a better record this season.  Also returning from trips to the NCAA tournament last season are junior Joe Mileski and sophomore Jordan Schulte.  Each wants to step onto the podium at the 2011 NCaa Championships in La Crosse.

Besides the returning qualifiers, the Pointers return 6 more wrestlers with starting experience.  Senior Andrew Dilworth will move up to 174 after starting at 157 the last two.  Jordan Kust returns at 133 where he competed in every meet for the Pointers, posting over 20 wins as a freshmen.  A season where he had 6 matches against eventual All-Americans and a summer working at J Robinson wrestling camps have Kris Magruder prepared for a breakout senior season.  Two past Pointer starters will battle for the 197 starting spot this season, and whoever wins should represent the Pointers very well.  Senior Brandon Jochem returns after being the go-to-guy at the weight last year for the Pointers, but so does Chad Gregory.  Chad had nearly 20 wins as a junior at heavyweight before taking last year off.  Also returning from last year’s starting lineup is Mark Puckhaber at 141.

This is a team with a legitimate title threat in Engelland and several other wrestlers who could join him on the podium.  It will be a disappointment if the Pointers fail climb higher in the NCAA standings.

197-Joe Tesauro-NJ District Qualifier

Season outlook:
Elizabethtown College is coming off a successful season with a record of 8-5, 3 NCAA Qualifiers, and finishing 17th at NCAA’s. Although Elizabethtown graduated 9 seniors from last year’s team , they are poised to improve on the marks they set last year. There is a great balance between young talent and experienced upperclassmen. Not only does the team have great balance this year, they also have tremendous depth at a most every weight.  One name missing from this year’s team is 2010 national runner up Tyler Erdman.  Erdman will be taking the year off to focus on greco-roman training.  Look for him in action at the NYAC Open on November 7th.  That said, Will Bentley filled in very well during Erdman’s injury last season, winning over 20 matches and placing at the tough Pete Willson Invitational.  This year, he moves into a full time starting role.

d3wrestle.com Interview with Chris Stratton

3

After two years as an assistant coach with the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Chris Stratton was elevated to the head position after Mike DeRoehn left and ultimately became the head coach at Lakeland College.  Stratton also wrestled at Oshkosh, graduating in 2007.  He is also an instructor in the Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education along with his coaching duties.  As he readies to start his first season as head coach, Stratton took some time to talk to d3wrestle.com about his new position and his vision for the 2010-2011 season at Oshkosh.

d3wrestle.com: After moving from an assistant role to the head job, how will your responsibilities change, and what support will you have as you learn the ropes?

Chris Stratton: As the head assistant last year, my main job responsibilities were academic advising, mentoring, and running practices from time to time.  This I will also be doing most of the administrative work and teaching a lot more technique.  I will still take the lead in helping guys achieve academic success as well.  Thankfully, I have a few great assistant coaches that I can depend on in all of these areas.

d3: What are you looking forward to most about your first year as head coach?

CS: I am most looking forward to seeing our team develop as leaders on and off the mat.  Coming into this season, we have a lot of juniors who are looking to step it up to the next level.  Starting with our first meeting, there was a great feeling of community and pride.  Also, I am looking forward to seeing the guys succeed in the classroom.  I have been an academic advisor for most of these guys since they were freshmen, and to see them hammering it out in the classroom and on the mat is something special.

d3: Let me know a little bit about your team.  Top returners and newcomers?  Goals for the season?

CS: Our top returners are two time qualifier Sam Engelland (174) and one time qualifier Zack Mueller (125).  Also returning are José Quintana, who won over 30 matches last year, and Kyle Kleuskens, one of two seniors on our team.  Aaron Erickson is another returner that has shown a lot of potential.  Newcomers we are excited about include Wisconsin State Champions Aaron Toll and Duane Hartkopf, Joey Andrews from the Chicago area, and our top recruit Nazar Kulchytskyy (ed. Note: Kulchytskyy is a Ukrainian immigrant who was a Fargo All-American and has freestyle wins over 4x National Prep champ Chris Villalonga and Dylan Ness, the #2 ranked high school 145 in 2010) .  We have many goals but our top three are as follows: top 10 NWCA scholar team, top 3 WIAC, and top 10 at the NCAA tournament.

d3: Do you have a specific philosophy on coaching that will guide your actions and decisions this season and beyond?

CS: My philosophy for Division III wrestling is that it is all about the student-athlete.  I want all my guys to be confident in the classroom as well as on the mat.  The rule our team follows is to never do anything detrimental to yourself.  We take pride in our team commitment to both academics and athletics.  Any decision I make regarding our program revolves around what is best for the wrestlers.  We only keep guys on the team who are 100% dedicated to the team.

d3: Tell me something unique about your team/school that would draw potential student athletes?

CS: I think the most unique thing about our team is our coaching staff.  We have coaches who cover academics, advising, spirituality, and technique.  We pride ourselves in the family type atmosphere we develop.  As a school, UW-Oshkosh has a lot of different opportunities for students.  I encourage all my guys to get involved in other clubs and organizations in order for them to fully develop as a professional.  Our school is also a leader in many areas such as its recreational facilities, state of the art sporting facilities, and its commitment to going green.

d3: What is the most important thing an athlete can focus on as he prepares for the upcoming season?

CS: In my mind, the most important thing for our guys to focus on right now is their school work.  Many times freshmen come in to the first day of practice already doomed from their first seven weeks.  I want everyone on the team to have at the very least a 2.5 on their grade check-up forms.  If guys are on the straight and narrow as far as school work goes, we can get them in shape and teach technique throughout the season.

d3: How will you measure success this season?  How will you know that your team had a good year?

CS: Success will be measures by GPA, dual meet record, and the goals we set for the season.  We set very specific goals that are easy to tell if we completed or not.  If we do everything in our power to achieve our goals, there is no way we can fail even if a goal is not completed.  The key is doing everything in our power to get things done.

Stratton added the following as a final word:

Having been an assistant coach here at UWO the past two seasons I expect a lot from our team.  When I came in, we had a lot of young guys who we knew had a lot of potential.  It’s time for our guys to step it up and prove they can be a top ten team.  I love Division III wrestling because it’s about more then just wrestling; it’s developing individuals into professionals in their field of study as well as teaching them about teamwork and leadership.
