2009-2010 Dual Meet Record: 5-2
2009-2010 National Qualifier: Tyler Marlow (NQ at 125)
Returning Qualifier: Tyler Marlow at 125
Number of returning wrestlers who competed in 2010 national qualifier: 8

Top returning starters:
Tyler Marlow (1st in ECWC at 125)
Eric Velez (3rd in ECWC at 133)
Eliah Golding (5th in ECWC at 149)
Tom Rispoli (2nd in ECWC at 157)
Clay Neivert (4th in ECWC at 174)
Luke Pariso (2nd in ECWC at 184)
Tom Voorhis (2nd and 4th in ECWC at 197)
Pat Krenz (4th in ECWC at 285)

Top incoming wrestlers:
Jason Chudzinski (125- NY placer and HS All-American)
Chris Collura (141- transfer from Appalachian State)
Justin James (165- JUCO All-American and NY college states champion)
Mike McGrath (197- NY placer and HS All-American)
Kris Shirley (149- NY placer)
Curt Thompson (125- NY placer)
Chris Vigliotti (149- transfer from Buffalo)
John Wilkinson (285- NY placer)
Amy Whitbeck (125- Junior World bronze medalist in 2010 and 2nd in U.S. World Team Trials)

Season outlook:
Brockport took a smaller group to the NCAA tournament last year than is typical for them, but they have six other returning wrestlers in the top four at the Empire to go along with 125 lb. champion Tyler Marlow.  That bodes well for 2010-2011, as it will not take drastic improvement to have multiple national qualifiers.  They will have to deal with excellent Ithaca and Cortland squads if they hope to retake the Empire Championship, but eight returning starters and their typical strong recruiting class should help.  Two Division I transfers and an NJCAA All-American headline a class with five New York state placewinners.  This should mean some serious competition for starting lineup spots and a strong dual meet squad.

Marcus Streit 285 Manilla, Iowa
Carl Gaul 197 Woodinville, Washington
Patrick Loughlin 165 Cherokee, Iowa
Ben Rosen 133 Lincolnwood, Illinois

Season Outlook:
Kevin Donahue is the top Ram returning this year after placing in each of the last two NCAA Championships.  THe other top returner for Cornell is Nick Loughlin.  He had a great season last year, entering the NCAA tournament as the #2 seed, but an overtime loss left him watching on Saturday.  He should be favored to change that this year.  A lot of Cornell’s returning wrestlers were just outside of the qualifying picture last year, but they were nearly all close enough to have realistic plans to be wrestling in Wisconsin in March.  With those eight returners and some solid newcomers, Cornell might not be ready to topple the big two of Coe and Wartburg in the IIAC, but they can solidify their hold on the third place finish they managed a year ago.

Evan Sinram 184 Wi Placewinner
197 Parker Brand RCTC Jr. College All-American
Cody Endres 197 Wi 2x Finalist
Rance Nofsinger Wi Finalist HWT

Season outlook:
La Crosse came close to winning the championship last year after entering the season ranked number one, but they had to settle for the second place trophy.  They were able to take home the consolation prize of three NCAA Champions, two of whom return in Yewah and Schmitz.  Also, 2009 champ Matt Mauseth is back for his senior year and is looking for his fourth All-American award.  With eight starters returning, La Crosse should again be very strong and in contention for the championship.  A lot will depend on how well they replace All-American Andy Moore at 197 and three time NCAA champ Dan Laurent at 285.  They did bring in a nice looking class with no less than eight state placewinners and an NJCAA All-American.  If a couple of their WIAC runners-up can make it to the NCAA tournament this time around and the returning qualifiers can keep it up, the Eagles will be a tough matchup all year long and especially in March.

165 DAVE MELNICK    DE STATE CHAMP
174 JAKE POEPPEL   NJ STATE QUALIFIER

SEASON OUTLOOK:
After a bit of a down year for them, York should improve in 2010-2011.  The return of some injured wrestlers will help with that.  All-American Thomason as well as Albert Gleichauf, JC Laughlin, Kyle Minogue, and Joe Erb will all return for this season.  Six state qualifiers and placewinners are part of a good sized incoming class.  The top incoming wrestler is former PA runner-up and Pitt starter Chris Albright.  With Albright building up the light weights and Thomason back in the upper weights, York’s lineup will look a lot stronger this year as they try to compete in the suddenly tougher Metro Conference with the addition of in-state competitor Delaware Valley.

Outlook:
Lots of new faces will be in the Red Dragon line-up this season.  We will be young and hungry.  Good quality from top to bottom will help Cortland hang on to last year’s Empire championship.  New weight classes for Colagiovanni (moving down to 125) and Sterling (moving up to 141) will finally get them away from one another.  Both are seniors looking to finish with a big year and have been training hard all summer.   Carl Korpi will be back at 197 this season.  He had a great year beat some of the top guys in DIII until Sottile won the wrestle off and went on to become an All American.  He could be on the verge of a big year.  He will face very tough completion in the room form last years starting 184-pounder Jared Myrhberg.   Jared struggled with the weight last season and looks much fresher coming into this season.  Sean Kempf was 3rd in the ECWC at 125 last year and might look to move up to 133 to battle a few tough freshmen for the spot there.  We return very good back-ups returning at 157, 165, 174, 184 for last year.  They were close to starting last year and will get their chance now.  They will be challenged by some new comers as well.  149 has three good kids that will battle in Junior John Cataldo and freshman Jake Beichner and Transfer Andre Berry.  Berry was an NAIA national qualifier and Beichner was a NY state Qualifier.  It will be an exciting battle.  Two new heavyweights will anchor the lineup this season.  Transfers’ Corey James and JTrenton Jones will comtend here.  James was a NY State HS runner up and JUCO AA and has lots of college experience and Jones was a talented high school wrestler coming to us after a stint at a local JUCO as well.

Seth Kilkelly – WI Sectional Qualifier
Nick Santana – IN Sectional Placer
Ben Hertel – IL Sectional Qualifier
Shane Brandl – transfer Hannibal-LaGrange
Jordan Semevolos – IL Sectional Qualifier

Season Outlook:
A nice incoming recruiting class will help the Falcons rebound from a disappointing 2009-10 season.  The top returners from last season, Lubner & Kemnitz, will switch weights from last season, and Nord will drop to 165.  David Tuomi will start the year at 149, but he may eventually end up at 141, like last season.  2008 DII All-American Kyle Becker joins the coaching staff and should help the young Falcons improve throughout the year.  A good number of freshman with state level experience should help get the team headed in the right direction in the always tough Great Lakes Region.

Season outlook:
After a few years of sending a lot of qualifiers to the tournament but coming back empty-handed, the Merchant Marine Academy broke through in 2010 with an 8th place finish from Jordan Alfaro and the first NCAA Champion in conference history in unseeded 165 lb. Vincent Renaut.  Both are back, along with a pair of other qualifiers in Dan Twito and James Beshada.  Four years ago, the Mariners had an outstanding recruiting class that has yielded four NCAA qualifiers, two of whom became All-Americans last year.  This group is now seniors and looking to have one last great year together to move the team higher in the NCAA standings and maintain their hold on the Centennial Conference championship.

Season Outlook:
Springfield finished second in the NEWA tournament last season and returns seven NEWA placers, including NEWA Champion Joe Grippi (133).   This, coupled with an outstanding recruiting class should make this the most successful season in several years.  The depth, currently 55 on the roster, and talent level on this team is excellent.  Springfield has a strong chance to regain the NEWA title that has eluded us for several years.   Although returners Grippi (133), Archambeau (157) and Burns (184) certified at these weights, they will probably start up a weight class and decide later on their final weight class.

Dylan Schroeder 133 4X Wisconsin placewinner–state champion
Aaron Smith 149 3X Michigan placewinner–state champion
Anthony Edgren 197 2X Wisconsin placewinner

Season outlook:
Whitewater begins their 50th year of wrestling in 2010-2011, and the Warhawks will be looking to replace some talented wrestlers after losing two All-Americans to graduation and returning just four starters from last year’s WIAC tournament.  Last year, Whitewater was 2nd in the WIAC to national runner-up La Crosse, and it will take some new starter and incoming freshman stepping it up a notch to match or exceed that performance.  At least six state placewinners make up part of a large freshman class, so there should be good competition at most weights, with veterans at 197 and 285 as the team leaders.  The Warhawks will take to the road this year as well, traveling to Pennsylvania for both the North/South Duals and Budd Whitehill Duals to help them get ready for the NCAA tournament back home in Wisconsin.

Sophomore Ryan Bridge became the Duck’s second All-American in school history with a 5th place finish at 141. Sophomore Joey Favia at 165 and Junior Bobby Bishop at 174 both advanced to the round of 12.

In the dual season, they competed well against some very tough competition. A loss by just 2 points to the team ranked #5 in the nation & a loss by 3 points to the #14 ranked team show that by toughening up just a few key weight classes, Stevens will make a big turn toward national prominence in the dual team format.  This year’s schedule will pit the Ducks against at least 8 ranked Div III opponents in duals as well as competition against Div I teams in duals and tournaments such as the Nittany Lion Open at Penn State.  A strong freshman class will compliment a strong cast of returning wrestlers this year. Top returners will be expected to step up big at 141 and from 157 up.  This year, the Ducks have added a full-time assistant coaching position that has been filled by 2x Michigan All-American, Damion Logan. Logan was a 4x NJ state finalist and 3x champion. He was also the head assistant at the University of Pennsylvania where he helped build nationally ranked recruiting classes and coached Matt Valenti to an NCAA Championship.

Other Assistants for the Ducks include: Part Time Assistant, Jerry Rinaldi, 2x All-American at Cornell University at 197 and Volunteer Assistants, CJ Ettelson, 4x Iowa State Champ and 4x NCAA Qualifier for Northern Iowa and Pete Galea, 2x All-American at Iowa State University.

Coach Clayton says, “We have a long way to go to reach our goals but the strong support of our school and the wrestling community in New Jersey is helping us keep moving forward!”

Top returning starters:
Matt Cross 165 (3rd Empire@174)
Dave Jones 174 (3rd Empire ’09, 4th ’08)
Mike Bressler 157 (3rd Empire ’09, 2nd ’08)
Tim Stewart 184 (5th Empire, 3rd Empire ’09)

133 Victor Bracey (PA State Q)
149 Dave Standridge (3X NJ State Q)
157 Stephen Cannon (2X MD State Q)
174 Ricardo Plummer (PA State Q)

Season outlook:
Messiah looks to continue to improve with a mix of returning starters, veterens and newcomers.  The return of starters Ty Kanouff, Dave Jones, and Mike Bressler from season ending injuries last year should give the Falcons needed experience throughout the lineup.  Several newcomers should push to make the starting lineup and it appears that almost every weight class will be seriously contested this year.  Matt Cross will try to fill the shoes left by two time national qualifier Trent Zempel at 165, and he is set up to do well there after finishing third at 174 int he Empire championships last season.  There should be some freshman starters in the lineup or at least challenging very seriously to start, and a significant portion of the Falcons’ success may be determined on both how they fit in the lineup and whether or not they can get full seasons out of those wrestlers who missed significant time last year.

Zach Wetzel (197)-2x State place-winner
Grant Franson (125)-Ill. State Qualifier

Season outlook:
Lakeland has been represented the past three years in a row at the NCAA Championships and will look to expand on the number of student-athletes competing at the national tournament. A group of quality returnees will need to be mixed with a strong freshman class to continue taking steps in a positive direction.  Renon is poised to go on a run as he will drop back down closer to his natural weight of 157/165 after bumping up for the team to 174 last year.  Frias is a leader with the necessary work ethic and attitude to take the next step at 133 or 141.  Roberson has beaten national caliber opponents and should have a strong senior season.  Weber has shown strong commitment to improving and has the ability to break through.  Rob Forgette competed at the Great Lakes Regional last year, has a great attitude and is improving all the time.  While every spot in the lineup is up for grabs, freshman with the potential to have an immediate impact are Grant Franson-125, James Parker-133/141, Bugajski-141, Loberger-149, Garcia-157, and Wetzel-197.

Two other OAC placewinners are back as part of the five returning starters. Heidelberg always brings impressive depth to the table and should be able to fill in as needed for the five starters lost. Nick Hite – Badger Conference Champ
Ben Hite – State Qualifier, 5th Place Wisconsin Freestyle State
Parker Peterson – 2x State Qualifier.

Season Outlook:
Mike DeRoehn got the ball rolling at Oshkosh, but now that he has passed the reins on to Chris Stratton, the team is poised for a breakout year.  Two returning national qualifiers and three other WIAC placewinners have the Titans in a good spot, and the freshman class is very strong with multiple state placewinners and qualifiers set to challenge for a starting spot.  The freshman to most watch out for, however, is Nazar Kulchystskyy.  He turned heads with some big wins in freestyle, and could surprise some this year if he has fully adjusted to collegiate wrestling after wrestling solely freestyle in his native Ukraine before coming to the States a couple of years ago.  La Crosse is still tops in Wisconsin, but Oshkosh is making some strides, and the Titans hope in increase their presence at the NCAA tournament.

University of Dubuque Spartans
Head Coach: Jon McGovern
Years at School as head coach: 7
Career Record at school:65-40
Assistant Coaches: Robert Larson, Nic Timbs, Evan Brown, Anderson Sainci, Rick Samuelson, Eric Daughetee, Nic Ketchum, Ryan Warner, Ryan Lessner, and  Pete Pearson

2009-2010 Dual Meet Record: 10-9
2009-2010 NCAA Qualifiers and All-Americans: Josh Terrell (3rd 165), Evan Brown (1nd 174), Ryan Warcynski (NQ 157)
Returning Qualifiers and All-Americans: Terrell (3x AA) and Warcynski

Top returning starters with accomplishments:
157 Ryan Warcynski, NCAA Qualifier
165 Josh Terrell, 3x AA

Season Outlook:
One of Dubuque’s big guns graduated to the assistant coaching ranks, but one returns.  NCAA champion and runner-up Evan Brown will be helping out this, year, but 3x All-American Josh Terrell returns.  Terrell was the top seed at 165 last year, but he was upset in the quarterfinals and proceeded to dominate the consolation bracket on his way to a third place finish.  He returns as one of the favorites in what should prove to be a tough 165 weight class.  Ryan Warcynski returns as the other national qualifier in the lineup, and he is looking to follow up a somewhat surprise trip to the NCAA tournament with a strong sophomore campaign.  With another year of experience for the Spartan underclassmen, 2010-2011 can be a year with more balance in the lineup.
