Help Fund the DIII Championships

8

The NWCA has started a crowdfunding page to help fund the NWCA Division III Championships. Travel and other costs for the teams will be paid for by the individual schools but the NWCA needs funding to put on the event. Venue rental, officials, table workers, awards and COVID-19 protocols all need to be covered. NWCA Division III Championships Update

6

The NWCA Leadership Group has been working on developing a non-NCAA championships event for Division III wrestlers prior to last week’s announcement, and the planning obviously kicked into overdrive with the cancellation of the 2021 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships. Teams were surveyed for interest and likelihood of competing in such an event, and an official announcement of an NWCA Division III Championships should be coming shortly.

The current format under consideration is a two day event taking place March 12-13 in Iowa. The exact site is still to be announced, as several venues are under consideration. The goal is brackets of no more than 32 wrestlers at each weight. There will not be a qualification round, but a selection committee could be utilized to narrow the field of entries down to 32 in the event more than that number desire to compete at a given weight. Wrestlers will come from teams whose institutions allow them to compete. This is the tournament at which NWCA All-Americans would be named.

The NWCA Leadership group elected by the DIII coaches was not consulted before USA Wrestling made their announcement and had been working on the idea for the NWCA Division III Wrestling Championships for weeks in anticipation that the NCAA could cancel winter championships. USA Wrestling and the NWCA Leadership Group have since been in touch and are hopeful they can work together to provide the best possible experience for Division III wrestlers.

The tournament operating expenses are estimated at $75,00-100,000 overall for venue rental, officials, labor, awards, and COVID-19 protocols and testing. The Leadership Group is looking for larger sponsors and will shortly establish a link for anyone who would like to donate to help defray the cost of the event. In a typical year, the NCAA pays for the cost of the Championships, so funding for this even will have to come from other sources.

Last week was tough on wrestlers who thought they would finish this season without a championship tournament, but at least some of them should have the chance to compete for All-American awards.

Things you can’t get back

10

The 2020 tournament was canceled for safety reasons as part of a blanket cancellation of all NCAA winter championships. The 2021 cancellation can only be thought of as a cost-saving move. The NCAA and Division III telegraphed as early as October that saving money was going to be an important consideration in the Division III winter championships. In the fall, the field size was cut from 180 to 135 to reduce the cost of putting on the tournament. Subsequently, the various committees decided that 70% of teams would have to compete in order for the championships to be held. That number seems arbitrary, and it is. It is the number below which Division III says having the tournament is not worth the cost.

Twenty years ago, I wrestled in the NCAA Championships for the first time. Going through the qualifying tournament, traveling to Iowa, walking into the arena, competing with the best wrestlers in Division III. All of it was an amazing experience that I and 159 other wrestlers got to share. We put in a tremendous amount of work to get there. I can only imagine the devastation I would have felt if I was told the month before that the tournament was too expensive, so it is not going to happen. This year’s wrestlers do not have to imagine how it feels, and some have now missed out twice.

Four years as a college athlete is not a long time compared to the rest of your life, but athletes get experiences in sports that they cannot have any other way. When you lose part of the college athlete experience, there is no way to get it back, and that applies to more than just the 180 (or 135) qualifiers. Wrestling in the regional and striving to make it through to the second day and then into the top three to qualify is the pinnacle of the season. The regional and national dates are circled on every calendar as soon as the previous year’s tournaments end. It is motivation to train hard, make weight, fight through injuries, do homework on the bus, and get up early to go spend all weekend in a gym while your friends sleep and wonder why you put yourself through this.

I feel terrible for the athletes. I constantly tell wrestlers I coach that they do not get to do this for very long and to be grateful for every opportunity, but it is hard when the NCAA cancels a championship due to money when DIII makes up barely 3% of the NCAA budget. Half a career’s worth of championship opportunities are gone. There are deserving guys who will never get to hear their names announced as they walk into the big arena, never get to stand on the podium, never get the gifts that say 2020 or 2021 NCAA Championships. I feel bad for the 1st time senior qualifier last year who had the rug pulled out from under him, the prior qualifier who would have gotten on the podium this season, and seniors who would have qualified for the first time this year but will never get the chance.

I do not know exactly how much it costs to run the DIII regional and national tournaments, but I believe the savings are not worth the cost of lost experience to the athletes who miss out regional and national tournaments after working towards them for years and years.

It is hard to square the NCAA Presidents Council statement with the what the athletes are going through. “We are committed to ensuring that our student-athletes have the best possible experience, and, for us, this means having a meaningful number of competitions.” It is unclear and unremarked on how removing championship opportunities enhances the experience of Division III athletes. I cannot imagine any Division III wrestler feels like losing a postseason he can never get back ensures him the best possible experience.

In the only match during a tough last night, Ferrum hosted Greensboro and prevailed 39-12. Greensboro forfeited four weights to the Panthers, but Josh Wilson had the win of the night, picking up a 6-4 decision over 2019 All-American and 2020 qualifier Levi Englman.

2021 NCAA Championships Canceled

4

In news that is as disappointing as it is unsurprising, the NCAA has canceled all Division III winter championships. 61.8% of 109 teams indicated an intention to compete enough to be postseason eligible. The previously published cutoff was 70%. Of all winter championships, wrestling was the only sport above 52.3% of teams competing. I will have more thoughts tomorrow, but for now, read the official release below.

Division III cancels 2021 winter championships

During its review of the declaration data, the Championships Committee determined participation numbers in all nine winter sports are well below the established threshold to provide a national championships experience. These established thresholds are 60% for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, and men’s and women’s indoor track and field, and 70% for men’s and women’s ice hockey and wrestling.

What will we know today?

0

The NCAA Administrative Committee is set to meet today to possibly make a decision on winter championships including wrestling. There are two questions to answer. First, will the committee make a final decision on wrestling today? Second, will that decision be announced today?

Whether or not the committee will make a final decision depends on the recommendation the committee is believed to have received from the DIII Championships Committee and if there is any possibility the committee will delay a final decision for some reason. The timing of any announcement depends on when exactly the meeting takes place and who needs to know before anything is officially released.

Division III schools were surveyed as to whether or not they expected to compete in the minimum number of competitions in each sport in time for the championship selection process. For wrestling, the minimum dates of competitions this season is three. Those surveys were due back to the NCAA on January 25th. If a school did not respond, that answer was counted as not planning to compete. The NCAA DIII Championships Committee met on January 29th, and it is believed they have made recommendations for each winter sport that the Administrative Committee will consider during today’s meeting. This committee has the authority to accept the recommendations they have received.

Recap:

  • October 1st, 2020 – NCAA Championships Committee affirms 25% reduction in number of qualifiers to the 2021 NCAA Championships. 135 athletes will qualify instead of 180.
  • The Division III Championships Committee affirmed its position that for sports with between 51 and 200 institutions, 70 percent of sponsoring member institutions must sponsor the sport to merit a championship.
  • DIII membership survey due January 25th asking schools if they plan to compete in enough contests in each sport to be eligible for postseason selection (3 dates for wrestling).
  • Championships Committee met January 29th and is believed to have forwarded a recommendation to the Administrative Committee
  • Administrative Committee meets today (February 3rd) and could act on the recommendation.

d3wrestle.com 2020-2021 Rankings #1

5

At long last, here are the first d3wrestle.com Rankings for the 2020-2021 season. This is a tough season to rank without large tournaments and much in the way of inter-conference competition. Some notes on the process:

  1. Wrestlers appearing in the rankings will only be ranked at a weight where they have wrestled. Adjustments will be made for guys who have not wrestled when teams start their schedules.
  2. Only wrestlers who appear as certified on Trackwrestling are ranked. Eventually, certified wrestlers will drop out if they do not compete with their teams.
  3. Since 30+ teams are not competing, the rankings have 18 wrestlers per weight class. As always, the top ten are in order, and the tiers after that are grouped but not numbered.
  4. If there are misspellings of names or mixed up schools, leave a comment so it can be fixed.

A matchup between #2 Wartburg and #14 Coe highlighted this past weekend’s action. A fall at 141 by #2 Kristian Rumph over #4 Riley Wright proved critical in a 23-21 win for the Knights. Kobe Woods secured a major decision at 197 to put the dual out of reach in a match where each team had five wins. Coe picked up three wins over higher-ranked opponents with Alex Friddle winning at 125 over #10 Brady Kyner, Josh Gerke winning at 149 over #10 Brady Fritz, and #10 Kaleb Reeves pinning #2 Jordon Brandon.

Olivet won seven weights in the four-team MIAA individual Championships, and Castleton topped New Jersey City University in the first match ever for NJCU. Former Rutgers and Rider wrestler Rob Cleary picked up the first ever individual win for the Gothic Knights.

Wrestler of the Week: Stanley Bleich

0
Senior All-American Stanley Bleich Defeated Two Top-3 Nationally Ranked Opponents to Win his 101th and 101st Career Matches

As the number of teams competing increases and three conferences have started their schedules, the Wrestler of the Week award returns. The first d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week for the 2020-2021 season is Stanley Bleich of Baldwin Wallace. In the season debut for Baldwin Wallace, Bleich helped the Yellow Jackets to a 2-0 record against Otterbein and John Carroll. Ranked 6th by the NWCA at 149, Bleich wrestled 157 on Sunday where he defeated NWCA #1 Ryan Whitten of Otterbein and #3 Sam Gross of John Carroll. The wins were the 100th and 101st of Bleich’s career.

Bleich, a senior from North Ridgeville, Ohio, is now 101-20 for his career and 2-0 on the season. He is a 2x NCAA qualifier, 3x regional placewinner, and 2020 Central Region champion. He was also named Ohio Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week for his performance. Baldwin Wallace takes on Ohio Northern and Wilmington on Sunday as the OAC schedule continues.

The ARC, CCIW, and OAC kicked off their conference schedules this past weekend, and a few other teams got matches in as well. Unfortunately, several scheduled events were postponed or canceled as schools grapple with the ongoing pandemic.

Of the three ARC tri meets scheduled for this weekend, just one went off entirely as planned. Buena Vista picked up wins over Simpson and Nebraska Wesleyan, while Simpson topped NWU in the other match at the event. Wartburg won 9 of 10 against Dubuque in a dual that was missing Luther, and the third scheduled tri with Loras, Coe, and Central was canceled. The conference schedule continues next weekend with another slate of three ARC tri meets.

In the CCIW, matches went off as planned. Concordia (WI) swept four duals at home to start the season, and Carthage picked up their first win since 1994 in their return to wrestling. Wheaton was 3-1, while MSOE picked up a pair of wins. In the other CCIW match on Sunday, North Central swept three matches, while Millikin and Augustana each picked up wins.

In the OAC, the quads became tri meets as each event had one team bow out. Stanley Bleich helped Baldwin Wallace to a 2-0 day as he picked up his 100th career win and defeated the #1 and #3 ranked wrestlers at 157. Over at Ohio Northern, the Polar Bears won twice, though Heidelberg did win a pair of individual matches against ranked opponents. Muskingum and Mount Union sat out this weekend with hopes to return for the next event.

Lastly, Averett and Huntingdon traveled to NAIA Allen for a tri. Both defeated the host, and Averett topped Huntingdon 39-10.

Matches at Ferrum and Manchester were postponed.
