2021 NCAA Championships Canceled

In news that is as disappointing as it is unsurprising, the NCAA has canceled all Division III winter championships. 61.8% of 109 teams indicated an intention to compete enough to be postseason eligible. The previously published cutoff was 70%. Of all winter championships, wrestling was the only sport above 52.3% of teams competing. I will have more thoughts tomorrow, but for now, read the official release below.

Division III cancels 2021 winter championships

During its review of the declaration data, the Championships Committee determined participation numbers in all nine winter sports are well below the established threshold to provide a national championships experience. These established thresholds are 60% for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, and men’s and women’s indoor track and field, and 70% for men’s and women’s ice hockey and wrestling.

I read about the cancellation of the tournament, and although I don’t agree with it, it is done.

However, there is an opportunity to have a successfully run Coaches Association tournament within the timeframe of the NCAA championships.

Have a 64 team tournament similar to March Madness for Basketball.

    1. Seed the teams for a Dual Meet tournament.

    2. Select 16 host locations with 4 teams at each.

    3. The 16 champs move on.

    4. Select the 4 host locations with 4 teams each.

    5. The 4 champs move on.

    6. Have one location for the final four teams with a championship and maybe a third place match.

Individual All American honors would be decided throughout the tournament.

This could take place Feb. 27, March 6, and March 13. All teams would have to use Covid protocols that would be acceptable to their respective colleges.

There are three weeks to plan it out, and wrestlers should never go down without swinging.

I have shared this with Brandon Brissette at Olivet College.

    Good luck,

  2. Why can’t y’all just let us be happy and wrestle. The teams that are compete if want a championship and y’all bent the rules for D1 schools but now that smaller school want to compete you all (the committee) turn a blind eye and say the rules are the rules.

  3. Nate, I’m am Sean Sax, awrestle at Westminster college. That sounds like a great idea. How can I help in anyway? I can speak to my coach and start reaching out to other schools if need be. We just want to wrestle and for a lot of us this is our last chance to compete.
