Mike Clayton Named Head Coach at Stevens

0

As reported earlier, Mike Clayton has officially been named Head Wrestling Coach at Stevens Institute of Technology.

From the StevensDucks.com:

HOBOKEN, N.J. (August 8, 2007) – Former United States Military Academy head assistant coach Mike Clayton (Brooklyn, Iowa) has been named the head wrestling coach at Stevens Institute of Technology. A four-time letterwinner at the United States Naval Academy during the 1990’s, Clayton takes over the Ducks’ program after former head coach Andy Lausier assumed the position of assistant coach at Princeton University in late-June.

“I’m very excited to join a great group of people at Stevens,” Clayton said. “The school’s administration and athletics director (Russell Rogers – Branchburg, N.J.) have made a landmark commitment to bring back a program to a wrestling rich community. They are 100 percent behind building the best Division III wrestling program in the nation.

“With our campus location near Manhattan, a top academic reputation and amazing job placement history, wrestling at Stevens is a natural fit for the best young men all around the country,” Clayton added.

During his three years at Army, Clayton helped produce eight NCAA Championship qualifiers. In his first year with the team, he guided Phillip Simpson to his third consecutive All-America certificate and an appearance in the national finals. In 2004-05 and 2005-06, Clayton was instrumental as the Black Knights returned to the national polls. He was also responsible for student development, recruiting, team and individual workouts, travel, budgeting, camps, purchasing, facility improvements and promotions while at West Point. Clayton’s 2006 recruiting class ranked No. 22 nationally in the Wrestling USA Magazine poll.

Gettysburg College Head Coach Hiring

UPDATE: Official Gettysburg Release HERE

The official announcement should be coming from the school in the next day or so, but I wanted to announce that I (Andy Vogel) will be the new head wrestling coach at Gettysburg College starting on August 13th. I will continue to maintain and update d3wrestle.com while coaching the Bullets. Gettysburg returns national qualifiers Matt Shank and Andrew Goldstein, who will look to defend their Centennial Conference championships in 2007-2008.

New Forum on d3wrestle.com

After several suggestions to add a forum, I have decided to do so.  The forum can be found by clicking the link below and by following the link in the sidebar.  Try to keep the discussion to Division III wrestling and leave the personal attacks at home.  It’s very basic right now, and I’ll expand and enhance it as it becomes necessary.  Hopefully, we can get some good discussion going.

Clayton to be Named at Stevens

0

I have received a tip from a source I consider reliable that Stevens Institute of Technology may soon name former US Military Academy assistant Mike Clayton as its new Head Wrestling Coach.  When the announcement officially comes, I will post that as well.

Clayton has spent the last three seasons assisting Army head coach Chuck Barbee, and was previously the head coach at the NCWA affiliated Apprentice School in Newport News, Virginia.  Clayton wrestled for the Naval Academy and post-collegiately with the U.S. Navy, placing 2nd in the 1996 Armed Forces Championships.  More bio information on Mike Clayton can be found  HERE and HERE.

Pushed to the Margins

1

Too often, the sport of wrestling is pushed to the margins at the Division III level.  With tight budgets and a lack of understanding from some administrators, wrestling finds itself hanging by a thin thread.  This is evidently the case at Muskingum College.  As reported previously, Muskingum College has hired Joe Montgomery as Head Wrestling Coach. Montgomery is a graduate of Mount Union College where he wrestled for a single season, compiling a 1-5 record at 141 pounds for then-coach Marcus Lambdin.  Montgomery was not a state qualifier in high school, nor does he have any experience as a wrestling coach (head or assistant) at any level, yet he is now the head coach of a college program.  He does, however, have experience as the defensive backs coach at Emory & Henry College, and his new position at Muskingum also involves assisting with the football team.  Clearly, his position with wrestling is secondary to his position as a football assistant.  Muskingum has all but announced that wrestling is not important at the school, and their hiring choices reflect that.  The published operating (non-salary) budget for wrestling according to the EADA Disclosure web site was $15,606 for the 2005-2006 season.  This is toward the bottom of Division III schools, but there are more than a few schools below this amount, so the potential is there to attempt to field a competitive team, but it appears the school does not have the desire to do so.  Montgomery may turn out to be a fine coach who is able to recruit, train, and motivate his team to high performance, and I hope he is able to do so.  However, the deck is stacked against Muskingum Wrestling and it is disheartening to see a program marginalized by turning the team over to a coach who:
– wrestled part of one season in college
– has no wrestling coaching experience at any level
– is the youngest head coach in NCAA wrestling

Let me reiterate that I hope Montgomery learns quickly on the job and beats the odds to become an excellent wrestling coach.  I just wanted to point out how wrestling can be pushed aside at smaller schools, and that choosing your wrestling coach based on how he helps the football team does not bode well for the future of the sport.

Burlingame named to head job at Manchester

0

Second year assistant Matt Burlingame has been promoted to head coach at Manchester College.  See Manchester’s release below.  This reduces the teams with vacant head coaching positions down to Gettysburg, Stevens Institute of Technology, and Western New England.  Matt Burlingame bio at Manchester

Burlingame Named Head Wrestling Coach

Following the retirement of 18-year wrestling coach Tom Jarman, Matt Burlingame has been appointed as the Spartans new head wrestling coach.  Burlingame spent one season with the Spartans as an assistant coach during the 2006-07 season.

Burlingame has over ten years of coaching experience and wrestled for Division I Virginia Tech before graduating in 1995.  He has served as a coach at the high school level in Kansas, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.

“Matt is a great fit for the Manchester College wrestling program,” says Jarman, who also retires as athletic director at the end of this month.  “He is a true student of the sport and will bring continued success to Manchester College’s athletic department.”

“I am extremely excited about the challenges this new opportunity brings,” adds Burlingame of his new position.  “My vision for this program is simple — be the best!  We are not going to miss a step and continue doing what has made Manchester wrestling great.  We’re going to keep doing things right.”

Burlingame will also serve as an instructor within the Exercise Sport and Science department as well as Director of Intramurals.

Olivet College Recruiting Class 2007

4

Click below for the Olivet College recruiting class for the 2007-2008 season. In addition to the names below, Coach Todd Hibbs has confirmed that junior 165 lb. starter Jason Brew will drop to 157, 184 lb. national qualifier senior Daron Cruikshank will drop to 165. Also, 2005-2006 starters Keith Sterly (285) and Aaron Stewart (184/197) will each return after a year off to care for a family illness and serve in Iraq, respectively. Olivet also returns junior Kyle Vanderhyde, the 2007 national runner-up at 174. Olivet placed 2nd in the 2007 Midwest Region.

Olivet’s potential starting lineup, per Coach Hibbs, is as follows, barring an impact freshman crashing the party:

125 – Labrecque or Mellish
133 – Gardner or Wilson
141 – Yahrmarkt, Bain or Hitchcock
149 – Lahar or Hitchcock
157 – Brew
165 – Cruickshank and Parker
174 – Vanderhyde
184 – Bargerstock or Stewart
197 – Yurisich, Surbrook or Weatherspoon
285 – Sterly and Misko

Bow and Arrow

0

It is the slow time of the year for college wrestling. Most of the coaching changes have already been made, the incoming freshmen at each school are known, and the next college match isn’t for four more months. Let me take this opportunity to post a technique video that is appropriate for a college website. The Bow and Arrow is illegal by application in high school, but it can be very effective in the right hands in college. There are two reasons for this. First, it’s solid, low risk technique, and second, most opponents are not familiar with the technique because it was illegal in high school. This video, along with any other that are hosted at d3wrestle.com can always be found on the Video Page.

SUNY Maritime to Drop Wrestling

1

SUNY Maritime drops three sports, including wrestling

The school announced today that wrestling, men’s tennis, and women’s basketball would be suspended for the coming season.  The silver lining to the announcement is the statement by the Athletic Director hoping that SUNY Maritime could reinstate the teams at a later date.  Maritime competed in the Metropolitan Conference for wrestling and entered four wrestlers in the 2007 conference tournament.  Hopefully, the school will be able commit the funds necessary to reinstate the program and attract enough wrestlers to field a full team in the future.  With an undergraduate student body that is 89% male, Title IX will likely never be a factor in whether or not to reinstate the team.  Please see the release from SUNY Maritime below

Sports Information Director
SUNY-Maritime

The Athletic Department at SUNY Maritime announced, with regret, that Men’s Tennis, Women’s Basketball, and Men’s Wrestling will not be offered for participation in the 2007-2008 academic year.

“Due to monetary constraints and low participation rates the last three seasons in these sports, it is necessary to discontinue them. Hopefully, at a later date this year, we can discuss their re- instatement”, states Maritime Athletic Director Russ Ketcham.

Maritime College offers 20 Varsity sports, as well as numerous club sports to its nearly 1200 students, one of the highest offering levels of any NCAA Division III program in the country.
