Season Outlook:
Number 12 TCNJ is looking for another Metro conference championship, but the job got a lot harder this year with the addition of perennial power and 8th ranked Delaware Valley moving from the Midwest Region to the Metro.  Wilkes, Elizabethtown, and Centenary also will be in the mix looking to spoil the Lions repeat chances.  That said, TCNJ brings back a very strong lineup featuring a lot of returning starters and six former NCAA qualifiers.  Late season injuries really hurt the team last year, but many of them return this year to form a lineup that could have as many as five senior starters.  The battle for the Metro championship should be entertaining to watch, as will the Lions’ quest to return to the NCAA top ten.

Season outlook:
Last season, Oneonta placed 12th in the NCAA for their highest ever finish.  They also had multiple All-Americans for the first time in program history.  Neither of those All-Americans return in 2010-2011, however, so it will fall to the incumbents to try to match that level of success this season.  There is certainly some good talent on this deep roster including several Empire and NY State Collegiate placewinners.  Heavyweight James Lamonica is the top returner, and he appears in the NWCA preseason rankings at #7.  The incoming class has good strength up and down the lineup with numerous state placers and qualifiers deciding to stay in New York and wrestle for Coach Ritter at Oneonta.  It is an experience team with a lot of upperclassmen that will be looking to hold off the new guys who definitely have some talent.

The 2010-2011 Division III Season is off and running after a few teams got going this weekend.  Norwich, Roger Williams, Scranton, and Morrisville kicked things off at a couple of dual events.  The Lindenwood Open was also this weekend, but it does not appear at first glance to have any DIII competitors.

Season outlook:
A strong core returns for the Norse led by a pair of All-Americans in Jayson Swanson and Jason Pyle.  Kevin Bokoski also qualified last year and comes in with a good chance to get on the podium in March.  Lance Serbousek is the other senior for Luther, and he was 5th in the IIAC last year.  In addition to the returners, Luther brought in 23 freshmen this year including five state finalists and some other placewinners.  They will need to replace national qualifiers at 184 and 285, but between the returning and new wrestlers, they should continue to be a top tier team.  The NWCA Team Rankings have Luther listed at 14th, but they are hoping to move up as they get their strongest 10 wrestlers on the mat come January.

Colten Moore (157) – transfer
Dan Gordon (197) – transfer, NAIA Nat. Qual.

Season outlook:
Eric Van Kley left a very successful NAIA team to return to Iowa and take over for the Dutch.  Now, after a few years at the helm, things have started to turn in a winning direction for Central.  2010 saw the team complete its first winning season in a decade, and almost all of that team returns in 2010-2011.  Numerous wrestlers who compiled individual winning records are back this year, and they have a pretty strong recruiting class including some state finalists and an NAIA qualifier in transfer Dan Gordon.  Turning a program around in the IIAC is never easy considering the strong competition from numerous nationall ranked teams, but Central is hoping to take another positive step this year and work towards representation at the NCAA Championships in March.

2009-2010 Dual Meet Record: 12-10
2009-2010 National Qualifiers and All-Americans: Matt  Magill (157) All American
Returning All-American: Matt Magill
Number of returning wrestlers who competed in your 2010 national qualifier: 1

Top returning starters with accomplishments:
Jamie Myers (197) and Matt Magill (157)

Season outlook:
NYU will send a young lineup into competition this year without a lot of returning starters.  They bring back a 2010 All-American in 157 lb. Matt Magill, and he will be counted on for leadership and toughness in the young lineup.  Jamie Myers is also back at 197 after placing third at thet Metropolitan Championships in 2010.  The rest of the lineup has some question marks, and it will just be a matter of development and experience if th Bobcats are to match last year’s winning record.

Oswego Preview

Oswego State Lakers

Top Incoming Wrestlers
Michael Gentilcore 6th NYS
Angelo Dinottia NYS Qualifier
Randy Sistenstein 2nd NY State qualifying tournament
Anthony Minnici 2nd NY State qualifying tournament
Joe Senf 2nd NY State qualifying tournament

Season outlook:
Last season was the first time in 42 years that Oswego State did not advance anyone to the NCAA Championships.  The Lakers are understandably anxious to begin a new streak this year and are looking for several individuals to be in contention to earn a spot in the 2011 national tournament.  Omar Santiago, Blake Fisher, Tony DeFranco, Marc Collins, and Kyle Sheridan are all returning Empire placewinners, and Cameron Mills brings a 42-17 career record to 2010-2011 after missing last year with an injury.  The top incoming wrestlers are NY placewinner Michael Gentilcore and NY qualifier Angelo Dinottia.  This team will have a chance to get back to the NCAA Championships, but it won’t be easy in the improving ECWC.

Tom Foote 2nd place at HWT 2010 as a Freshman
George Sullivan 5th place at 174 NEWA 2010
Jon Foster 3rd place at 165 NEWA 2009

Mike Lomio- 184 NJ SQ
Taylor Treadgold- 125 NY SQ
Carson Brooks- 133 PA SQ
John Mckessy- 157 OH SQ
Henry Schmidt- 157

Season outlook:
Williams had another good season last year, turning in a repeat win at the NEWA Championships and sending three the the NCAA Championships for the first time. They are led by NCAA falls leader and 2x NCAA runner-up Ryan Malo.  Malo suprised some with his first trip to the NCAA finals, but came in as the #2 seed last year and lived up to that expectation.  He is back for one more year, though both of his finals opponents also return.  Corey Paulish was a 4th place finisher at 141 two years ago before qualifying but failing to place at 149 last season.  He is in a tough weight nationally, but has the experience to get back on the podium.  The future remains bright for the Ephs, as they had two freshmen make the NEWA finals before falling just short of the NCAA tournament.  Cez Antista and Tom Foote both just missed out on the trip to Cedar Rapids.  Foote is back at 285, but Antista will be moving up to 141 following the graduation of national qualifier Dylan Rittenburg.  Williams had their first ever 20 win season last year, and they have a strong group ready to try to make it two in a row while seeking a third straight NEWA Championship.  New coach Rich Hasenfus has moved over from Norwich and will do his best to keep the momentum going.  He has a strong roster that should help make that happen.

Trine Preview

3

Trine University
Head Coach: Dan Callahan

Career Record at school:  46 – 39 – 1
Assistant Coaches: Mike Ester, Nathan DeVaux, Tim Bradley

2009-2010 Dual Meet Record: 12- 7

Number of returning wrestlers who competed in 2010 national qualifier: 6

Top returning starters:

Will Sheets – 133 4th Regional 2010
Elias Larson – 149
Ryan Pieper – 174 2nd Regional 2010
George Markou – 165 2nd Regional 2010
Alex Fleet – 197 2nd Regional 2008, 3rd Regional 2009, 3rd Regional 2010
Dylan Forbes-  285 5th Regional 2010

Top incoming wrestlers:
Adam Fahs 3rd in MI Div 1 140lbs,
John Tanner 4X MI Placer Div 3 145lbs,
Justin Beck 2nd IN 140 lbs,
Danny Lopez   2X WA State placer 215 and 189.
Dalton Sparks 2X IN State Placer 145 & 152

Season outlook:
Trine is still a relatively new team, but head coach Dan Callahan has made great strides building depth in the five years of Trine wrestling, and the program took a big step in getting its first NCAA qualifier in 2010.  That qualifier has graduated, but a talented and deep team is left behind that is solid up and down the lineup. Six former regional placewinners return, along with 30 match winner Elias Larson who is coming of a successful freshman season.  Senior Alex Fleet has been close to qualifying all three years, and he is one Trine wrestler hoping the departure of Delaware Valley for the Metro Conference will help him get over the hump.  Additionally, Ryan Pieper and George Markou were regional runners up that can guarantee a trip to the NCAA tournament by getting one step higher on the podium.  The Thunder should definitely challenge for the team title at the Midwest Regional in 2010-2011.

Marty Kisla, So.(285) transfer from Robert Morris where he played football, 2009 PIAA AA State Qualifier

Luke Lohr, Fr., (141-149), Somerset High School records for wins (117) and pins (58). Pennsylvania Qualifier
Sam Lombardo, Fr. (149), PA AAA state qualifier and Dapper Dan participant for WPIAL
Josh Mihalik, Fr. (285), Wellsboro High School, 4th PIAA Class AA Northeast Regional
Brandon Fedorka Fr. (285), Hopewell High School, PIAA Class AAA qualifier

Season outlook:
With seven starters returning and a big, talented recruiting class being welcomed for the 2010-11 season, the Waynesburg wrestling team looks to not only successfully defend its Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) team title, but have a bigger presence at the NCAA Division III National Championships. Leading this year’s Jackets is senior Nick Garber, who placed seventh at nationals at 133 pounds last year. This year, he plans to move to 141 pounds. Also back are sophomore 125-pounder Alex Crown and junior 149-pounder Jesse Byerly. Both wrestlers won PAC individual titles, with Crown being named PAC Most Outstanding Wrestler, and both wrestlers came just one win short of going to nationals. Juniors Garrett Johnston (149-157), Alex Evanoff (165) and Jared Roberts (174) all bring two years of extensive varsity experience with them to this year’s squad. Sophomore Cody Catalina (174-184) completes a solid bridge from the team’s highly accomplished lighter weights to their upper weights that will be filled by two or three newcomers. If Catalina handles 184 pounds, the Yellow Jackets will start back-to-back freshmen at 197 and 285. Head coach Ron Headlee, the PAC Coach of the Year, and his primary assistant John Yates made it a priority to recruit these weight class. By all accounts, they succeeded. PIAA state qualifier Jake Linn and Tyler Lewis will likely compete for the 197 spot once football season ends. Another former PIAA state qualifier, Marty Kisla, a transfer from Robert Morris, will compete with freshman Josh Mihalik, who went 32-1 in the regular season of his senior year, for the starting heavyweight job. PIAA qualifier and Dapper Dan participant Brandon Fedorka will add further depth at 285 pounds once football season has ended. In all, this year’s class of newcomers boasts a WPIAL title, five PIAA state qualifiers, three Dapper Dan participants and a two-time freestyle national qualifier. The Jackets open their season on Saturday, Oct. 30, when they hold their annual Orange & Black Intra-squad Duals. They start live competition on Nov. 6 at the always competitive Messiah Invitational.

HWT Ryan Fank Iowa State Champion
184 Sam Upah 4x Iowa state placewinner
165/74 Bradley Banks Jr College National Champion (Iowa Central)
157 Tanner Kampen Jr College All American (Iowa Central).

Season outlook:
Wartburg brings back a lot of experience into 2010-2011.  There is the potential that nine starters will return this season, at least for the second semester.  Kelly, Weber, and Becker all have the option to come back for one last shot starting in January.  Even if they do not come back, the Knights are well-stocked with All-Americans at 125, 165, 174, and 285 with NCAA champ Byron Tate rounding things off at 197.  This is definitely a team that will once again be in the mix for an NCAA championship when all is said and done.  They are able to keep this level of success from year to year because they do an outstanding job bringing in new talent to replace that which is lost to graduation.  The top incoming guys are probably 3x Iowa state champ Cole Welter and Bradley Banks, last year’s NJCAA champion for Iowa Central.

Jake Wright Region Placer CA
Colin Crowell New England runner-up
Kevin McGilvray Region placer NJ
Johann Roebelen New England prep champ
Michael Scrozzo NJ state qualifier
Shane Parcel NJ state qualifier
Tim Garlington MD state placer

Season outlook:
Roger Williams again brings a deep roster to the season.  It is a young team that will feature a number of freshmen and sophomores in the starting lineup.  Those young wrestlers will need to step up if RWU plans to continue its school record 14 straight winning seasons.  The top returner is Nick Cambi, last year’s runner up in the NEWA at 197 is back for his senior year but will be moving up to 285 to try to make the NCAA tournament in his final season.  With only one other conference placewinner back, the Hawks will be counting on a deep freshman class with numerous state qualifiers and placewinners.  IF they can step in and contribute right away, Roger Williams could make it 15 winning seasons in a row.

Season Outlook:
Delaware Valley is coming off a season that saw the squad notch a 13-2 record in dual meets, capture the Midwest Regional Championship for a fourth straight year and place fifth at the NCAA Championships for the third year in a row. The Aggies sent seven wrestlers to the national tournament and a school-record tying five came back as All-Americans.

This year will have a different look as the Aggies have left the Midwest Region after four years (winning the team title all four times) to compete in the more local Metropolitan Conference. Four of the five All-Amercans from last year graduated, but head coach Brandon Totten has reloaded his roster with wrestlers with impressive resumes. The daily competition in the wrestling room will result in a strong and battle-tested lineup for its matches.

Heading the cast of returnees is two-time national qualifier and 2010 All-American Jesse Harrington (157 pounds). Harrington, a senior, bounced back from missing the entire 2008-09 season with an injury and posted a 25-6 record, a Midwest Regional title and a fifth-place finish at the NCAAs. Harrington was ranked first in Division III for a good part of the season and took that ranking into his second trip to the national tournament where he reached the semifinals.

2010 national qualifiers Emmanuel Ajagbe (149 pounds) and Dan Daddino (174 pounds) also return. Ajagbe, a sophomore, had a successful rookie camphin as he went 28-9, placed second at the Midwest Regional Championships (behind eventual national champion Isaac Dukes) and earned a wild-card berth to the NCAAs. Daddino, a senior, won 29 of 42 matches and took top honors in his weight class at the Midwest Regionals.

Zak Andrews (141 pounds) and Zac Haynes (133) are back after placing at regionals a season ago. Andrews, a junior, tied for the team lead in wins with 32 (32-15), including a team-best 22 by fall. He finished in fifth place at the Midwest Regional. Haynes’ rookie campaign saw him post a 12-13 record and place sixth at regionals.

Senior Eric McCann (141 pounds) and junior Zeke Pyle (285 pounds) are two other returnees to watch in 2010-11. McCann, a regional placewinner in 2009, won 12 of 18 matches last season. Pyle notched a 12-8 record a season ago.
