2012-2013 St. John’s Preview

2

Saint John’s University (Minn.) Johnnies (West Region)
Head Coach: Brandon Novak
Years at School as head coach: Ninth
Career Record at school: 65-57
Assistant Coaches: Scott Fernholz, Kevin Schiltz, Tony Willaert

2011-12 Dual Meet Record: 8-7
2011-12 National Qualifiers and All-Americans: Dustin Baxter (2nd, 197 lbs.), Mitch Hagen (184 lbs.), Chad Henle (133 lbs.), Chris Stevermer (157 lbs.), Matt Pfarr (4th, 174 lbs.)
Returning Qualifiers and All-Americans: Mitch Hagen (2012, 184 lbs.) and Chris Stevermer (2012, 157)

Top returning starters:
-Mitch Hagen: National Qualifier (2012), 23-8 record last year
-Nick Schuler: 27-8 record last year, including 20 bonus-point wins
-Chris Stevermer: National Qualifier (2012), 25-12 record last year

Top incoming wrestlers: Josh Wells, Andy Poster, Josh Willaert, Matt Kadrlik

Season outlook:
St. John’s finished 11th last year and took five wrestlers to the NCAA Championships. Two of those return in Chris Stevermer and Mitch Hagen, and each will be looking for his first All-American award. Those two could also be the only seniors in the lineup for what promises to be a talented but fairly young lineup. Another top wrestler coming back in Nick Schuler at 165. Schuler had put together a 27 win season before a late injury slowed him in the postseason. Behind those three, a young group will use the Johnnies’ tough schedule to get ready for the end of the year as head coach Brandon Novak looks to keep the team high in the NCAA rankings.

184-Larry Gordon-PA state qualifier, 40-10
184/197-Buck Kauffman-PA region qualifier, 32-5

Season outlook:
With the loss of two All-Americans and a few other big producers, Etown’s line up will look very different this year. All-Americans Quint Eno and Bill Meaney have graduated, leaving some holes to fill.  They still return a pair of Metro Conference top 3 placewinners including the dangerous Julian Meaney. Etown will have a talented but young squad looking to improve on their 11-6 record from last year.  As with every year, health will be a big factor for success for this team. The lineup will be young, so they will be counting on some new faces as well as some new starters to lead the team into competition in the Mideast Region.

Season outlook:
Wabash returns one NCAA qualifier and brings in two NAIA qualifiers to anchor the lineup along with a two time regional runner up and a few other regional placewinners. With a roster of nearly 60 guys, the rooms depth is going to be thick and very talented. A great freshman class and a few very talented transfers will only help in the cause. Wabash is aiming for the top spot in the Midwest regional after finishing 2nd the last two seasons. 8 of 10 returning starters will return, some of which will have to hold off some very talented freshman to keep their spots in the line up. Most challenging task of the coaches this season may be trying to fit all the top talent into 10 starting spots. The top freshman is probably heavyweight Abraham Hall who was the Indiana state champ last season.

James Rogers-SQ
John Roycraft-2nd&3rd at WI State Tournament, 3X SQ, 146-22 HS Record

Season outlook:
With only one wrestler graduating from last year’s lineup, the Pointers are set up for a nice season in 2012-2013. All-American Joe Mileski will be missed, but a pair of national qualifiers return in Ben Strobel and 2x qualifier Jordan Schulte in the middle of the lineup. Seven of the returning starters finished in the top three in the WIAC last season, so even those who missed qualifying were knocking on the door. Time will tell how this group fares against the very tough Midwest region when March rolls around. There is also a nice freshman class coming in that features numerous state placewinners, but it might be tough for any of those new wrestlers to get into the lineup this year. However the future is bright as those new wrestlers gain experience in 2012-2013 that will serve the Pointers well in the future.

197: Oliver Newton (5th in State – Geneseo, IL), Brett Haas (7th State – Dubuque, IA)
HWT: Zac Osborn (Muncie, IN)

Season outlook:
John McGovern has done a good job getting Dubuque to be competitive in the tough IIAC, and he returns a pair of NCAA qualifiers from last season’s fifth place IIAC team. Four other conference placewinners are back in the lineup as well for the Spartans. Eric Powell was 4th in the conference, while Derek Mizaur was 5th but finished the season with 20 wins. One noteworthy change is the possibility that 3x qualifier Ryan Warczynski may be moving up to 165 for his final season, with Mizaur dropping to 149. Dubuque has brought in a deep class that covers most of the weights and some of those wrestlers will definitely be in the mix for starting spots while the two returning qualifiers each look to get on the podium for the first time.

Years at School as head coach: 1st
Career Record at school: 0-0

Luke Dies (4th OH)
Brogan Endres (5th OH)
Seth McCurdy (OH qualifier)
Brian Deming (OH qualifier)
Brett Fortune (2x OH qualifier)
Jordan Judy (IN qualifier)

Season outlook:
There have been a lot of changes for the Mount Union wrestling program. Gone are five national qualifiers and a head coach but a new coach, four returning starters and a young energetic squad want to keep the momentum of a program moving forward that has won two-straight Ohio Athletic Conference championships. Bill Schindel was promoted from assistant coach to head coach in the off-season and the three-time All-American for the Purple Raiders assembled a staff, recruited his first class while getting an eager group of returners ready to go. “We are looking to have a great year,” commented Schindel.  “The team is very young, but also excited and very eager to prove themselves.” Leading the group of returners is senior Jeremy Hathaway, junior Lambert McElrath and sophomores Bryant Roby and Jon Garrison.  Hathaway was 13-13 in an injury shortened season a year ago, McElrath was an All-OAC pick with a second place finish at last year’s conference championship, Roby made it to the semifinals at the conference tourney a year ago and Garrison was 17-14 last year splitting time at 157. Jon Blanton – 149 – (143-34 HS Career) 3X Indiana Semi-State Qualifier
Michael Conner – 184 – (64- 20 HS Career Record)

Season outlook:
Both of Trine’s qualifiers are back this season, and 2x All-American Elias Larson looks to be the preseason favorite at 157 with last year’s champ most likely moving up to 165. Ryan Pieper also returns after qualifying at 184, but he will be dropping to 174 this season. A lot of the rest of the lineup will be a young group around those two seniors, with the lineup composed of a lot of freshman and sophomores like last year’s regional runner-up at 125 Brandon Preston. If the young wrestlers can develop quickly, the team has a chance to better last year’s record as they seek to crown their first ever NCAA champion as well.

Chris Miehe- (174) NJ State Qualifier
Kam Mueller- (174) PA State Qualifier
Kyle Gora- (285) 2x NJ State Qualifier
Mike Spencer (285) NJ State Placer 4th

Season outlook:
York will be looking to follow up a record-breaking season that saw the team achieve 25 dual meet wins and bring home three All-American awards. All four NCAA qualifiers from last year are gone as the Spartans try to reload for 2012-2013. Last year’s starters at 125 (Giaccio) and 133 (Glatz) both placed at the Metro tournament, and each is headed up a weight class this season. Following them in the lineup at 149 could be 2x JUCO All-American Vinny Pisani. He was a 2x NJCAA All-American in 2009 & 2010 before spending some time on Edinboro’s team during the 2010-2011 season. Another top returner is Kyle Minogue at 197 who put up 25 wins a year ago. With York’s typically large freshman class, the team should be well-suited to fill in the holes left by four NCAA qualifiers and put together a successful season.

Follow up a record breaking season with 25 dual wins and three All-Americans.
Will need to replace 4 National Qualifiers and 3 All-Americans. Huge freshman
class with 39 incoming wrestlers and 5 returning starters. Excited for new
regional qualifier as we head west with mainly Ohio schools (Mid East Region)
Looking to improve on 2nd place Metro finish and continued success at the Mid
East Regional and National Tournament.

2012-2013 Southern Maine Preview

University of Southern Maine Huskies (Northeast Region)
Head Coach: Joseph Pistone
Years at School as head coach: 10
Career Record at school: 71-74
Assistant Coaches: Julio Santiago 8 years, Mike Morin 3 years, Billy Cole 1 year, Cinjin Goewey 1st year, Ben Garelick strength and conditioning coach 1 year

Facebook: Southern Maine Wrestling

2011-2012 Dual Meet Record: 15-7

Top returning starters with accomplishments:
149 Peter Gilman 5th NEWA 10′
157 Logan Russell 5th NEWA 12′
HWT Dan Suarez 6th NEWA 12′

Top incoming wrestlers:
149 Joseph Page (NH) 2x New Hampshire All State Champion
157/165 Anthony Pistone (NY) 2nd Section 11, New York State Place winner (6th)
174 Matthew Harding (MA) 2x MA State Place winner, Sectional Champion

Season outlook:
Southern Maine had a nice record last season and set a program best for dual meet wins. A trio of NEWA placewinners are back to contest the new Northeast Region and try to get Southern Maine back to the NCAA Championships in 2013. Logan Russell and Dan Suarez placed last year while Peter Gilman placed in 2010 but missed last year. The Huskies bring back some experience and could put a line up with almost all returning wrestlers on the mat in 2012-2013. There are some talented newcomers, however, led by New York placewinner Anthony Pistone who will be gunning for the 165 spot. Several other new state placewinners will also vie for starting jobs. A team record for wins paired with a tenth place conference tournament finish shows a balanced team that did not have as much top level talent as some past USM teams, but Head Coach Joseph Pistone will look to keep the depth while getting a wrestler or two on to the final weekend.

2012-2013 Central Preview

0

Central College Dutch (Central Region)
Head Coach: Eric Van Kley
Years at School as head coach: 6
Career Record at school: 36-57
Assistant Coaches: Kevin Donahue, Matt Diehl, Bob Kuennen

2011-2012 Dual Meet Record: 13-11
2011-2012 National Qualifiers and All-Americans: Joseph Atwell – 157
Returning Qualifier: Joseph Atwell – 157

Top returning starters:
Joseph Atwell (157): Rd of 12 at Nationals (2 Nationals loses: #2 Ponce – Augsburg, #4 Larson – Trine)
Daniel Page (125): Beat 3 Ranked, HM, or NQ last year: Beat NQ Ambrocio –Concordia (WI), Beat Austin Mogg – BV twice, Beat Honorable Mention Tommy Poynter (Wabash) 9-2
TJ Peretti (141): 19-11: 2-0 vs. Chris Leclere @ IIAC Conf., 1-0 vs. Hinschberger – Coe in dual.

Top incoming wrestlers:
Aaron Anderson – 133 (Iowa State Finalist)

Season outlook:
Central finished 2011-2012 with its best season in 18 years. A winning record and a national qualifier who is set to return bodes well for the future of the Dutch program. Along with Atwell, who made the round of 12 last season, most of last year’s lineup returns to try to improved on that 13 win total. Freshman Aaron Anderson, an Iowa finalist, should help bolster the lineup at 133. Surrounding him are a pair of tough wrestlers in Daniel Page and TJ Peretti. Both had some big wins last year in a tough conference that has now become the bulk of what promises to be a tough Central Region. Coach Eric Van Kley definitely has this team headed in the right direction and perhaps back toward the success of past Central teams. Getting their first All-American since 2004 will be the next step.

174 Zach Thomson – 41-3, 2nd Centennial, NCAA Qualifier
174 Jared Leon – 22-13, 2nd Centennial
285 Kevin Poplaski – 31-15, 1st Centennial, NCAA Qualifier

Top incoming wrestlers:

Cody Keane – 3rd New England
Tyler Cunningham – 1st CT State Open
Jon Faul – 3rd VA
Lukas Iorio – 8th NJ
Nick Diunizio – FL state qualifier
Manny Markantone, Will Cauffman – National Prep qualifiers

Season outlook:
Gettysburg returned to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2009, and both of those qualifiers return looking to make it to the second day of the tournament to become All-Americans. With only one full time starter graduating, and a good group of freshman joining the team, the Bullets should have filled some lineup holes that will make winning dual meets easier. Sophomore Zach Thomson set the singe season wins record at Gettysburg in his first season, and he hopes to improve upon that performance as a sophomore moving up to 174. Senior Kevin Poplaski will try to earn his second trip to the NCAA tournament as well. Juniors Matt Spano (34 wins in ’12) and Jared Leon are both 2x conference placewinners, and both have realistic shots at making it to Cedar Rapids out of the East. With 26 wrestlers on the roster, the Bullets have some depth that will help them survive injuries and continue their year by year improvement.

Season outlook:
The western frontier of Division III wrestling is represented by Pacific University in Oregon. They spend most of the season competing with non-DIII schools out in their area, save a trip to the Desert Duals in Las Vegas each year. Then, they make the trip east to join the new West Region in 2013. The team should be improved this year as a pair of Regional placewinners is joined by a good recruiting class featuring an NJCAA qualifier and at least three more state placewinners from the West.

Additionally, 2011 All-American Tim Lutke is slated to return in January at 197 lbs. after an injury at the Metro Conference ended his season last year. Some other lineup spots will be filled by new faces, but the 2013 Cyclone wrestling team will be one of the favorites to win the new East Region in March.

Assistant Coaches: Joe Bochenski, Ron Groves, Aaron Gomoll, Troy Carlson, Wes Rosamilia, Ben Adams, Phil Kruzel, Adam Shoger, Khashayar Sarrafi

2011-2012 Dual Meet Record: 8-6
2011-2012 National Qualifiers and All-Americans: Sam Pennisi (184)
Returning Qualifier: Sam Pennisi

Top returning starters with accomplishments: Sam Pennisi (184, NQ) – Palmisano (197, d3wrestle.com All-Freshman Team), Willie Long (133, 6th Region), Ryley Hankenson (174, 6th Region), Frankie Acosta (141, 5th Region)

Top incoming wrestlers: Alex Moore (4th Ironman, 2nd OH)

Season outlook:
Leo Kocher enters his 35th season in Chicago and returns a fairly deep team with some returning wrestlers who were knocking on the door of the NCAA tournament last season. Sam Pennisi was their lone qualifier, and he returns at 184. Mario Palmisano made the d3wrestle.com All-Freshman team and placed fifth in a region that had three All-Americans in 2012 at 197. Senior Jim Layton was the 3rd seed at the regional at 165 and will drop to 157 for 2012-2013. Chicago will need the depth their returning regional placewinners provide, as they have been placed in arguably the toughest region and will need a good performance out of their returners and new 125 lb. Ohio state runner up Alex Moore to get near the top of the standings.

Season outlook:
Alex Whitney, a graduate of Norwich, takes over as head coach for 2012-2013 with hopes of bringing some stability to a team with its third head coach in four years. The top returner is heavyweight and 20 match winner Anthony Joyce, but the team should also have a number of other returning starters who hope that another year of experience will help this young team find more success in 2012-2013.

2012-2013 UW-Oshkosh Preview

2011-2012 National Qualifiers and All-Americans: Zach Mueller (125), Nazar Kulchytskyy (1st, 157), Dan Schiferl (174), and Sam Engelland (184)
Returning Qualifiers and All-Americans: Dan Schiferl and Nazar Kulchytskyy

Top returning starters: Dan Schiferl- NCAA round of 12, Nazar Kulchytskyy- National champion, FILA Junior National Champion

Top incoming wrestlers: Jarred Jaminski 125, Robert Holzem 141, and Tyler Wetenkamp 197 (4th WI)

Season outlook:
Oshkosh rode a senior-laden team to a 9-4 record last year and qualified four to the NCAA championships. The highlight of the season was sophomore Nazar Kulchytskyy avenging an earlier loss in the NCAA finals against a 3x finalist to give Oshkosh its first NCAA champion just two weeks after Kulchytskyy became the first Oshkosh WIAC champ since 2001. He is back this year, and it looks like he will be at 165 this season. Schiferl returns at 174 after dropping a razor thin 3-2 match in the All-American round last year. With ten seniors graduating, the underclassmen will have to step up and aid in the rebuilding process, but it helps to have the likes of Kulchytskyy and Schiferl to lead the way.

Season outlook:
Roger Williams has their typical large roster for second year head coach Jon Egan, as there are 44 wrestlers on the team. They are led by NCAA qualifier Collin Crowell and NEWA placewinners Phil Ernst, Shane Parcel, and Conor Hayes. Only one starter graduated from last year’s team, so the team is poised to do well in the new Northeast Region. The incoming class is led by five state placewinners and a National Prep placewinner, and some of those newcomers could find their way into the starting lineup before the year is over.
