Kevin Schiltz takes over at St. John’s

0

St. John’s announced yesterday that longtime assistant Kevin Schiltz will take over the wrestling team and replace Tony Willaert. Willaert left to become the new head coach at Augustana when he was informed by the school that the head wrestling coach position was going to be reduced to a part time position. Read more at the 7th post at this link. Schiltz has been an assistant wrestling coach and equipment manager for the past 16 seasons at St. John’s. The Augsburg graduate was a three time All-American and finished 7th in the 1997 US Open. He has coached in Division I, II, and III. See below for the release from St. John’s.

Longtime SJU assistant takes over wrestling program
July 20, 2017

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Kevin Schiltz, a 16-year assistant wrestling coach at Saint John’s University, has been named head coach of the Johnnies’ program, athletic director Bob Alpers ’82 announced on Thursday, July 20.

Schiltz replaces Tony Willaert ’11, who was named head wrestling coach at Augustana College (Ill.) June 22. Schiltz will continue to serve as the SJU athletic department’s equipment manager.

“I am thankful for this opportunity to be the head wrestling coach at Saint John’s University,” Schiltz said. “I believe that I have a strong foundation here to build a program that everyone can be proud of.”

Schiltz’s tenure as an assistant coach at SJU covered three different head coaches: John Elton ’80 (2000-04), Brandon Novak ’01 (2004-14) and Willaert (2014-16). In total, the program produced 18 All-Americans, including national champions Novak and Minga Batsukh ’11 (three-time), and 53 national qualifiers in those 16 seasons.

“We are thrilled that Kevin has accepted our head coaching position,” SJU athletic director Bob Alpers ’82 said. “We had some outstanding candidate for the position, but Kevin’s combination of experience, both as a decorated wrestler and assistant coach, proves that he is the right person to lead this program. Our commitment to wrestling is strong and we are excited for the future of the program.”

A native of Albert Lea, Minn., and the 1988 Minnesota state high school champion at 185 pounds, Schiltz was a three-time High School All-American in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. He graduated from Augsburg in 1993 and was a member of two NCAA Division III national-championship teams with the Auggies (1991 and 1993). He was also a two-year starter on both the offensive and defensive lines for the Auggies’ football team.

Individually, Schiltz compiled a 150-28 record and was a rare four-time Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion and national qualifier, of which he earned All-America honors three times (third nationally at 190 pounds in 1989, fifth at 190 in 1990 and sixth at heavyweight in 1993). He finished fifth at the 1989 collegiate freestyle national championships and was inducted into the Augsburg Athletic Hall of Fame in September 2016.

Following graduation, Schiltz competed as an amateur on the national stage, finishing seventh at the 1997 U.S. Men’s Open (freestyle).

He started his coaching career as an assistant for two seasons (1996-98) at Division I Virginia and returned to Minnesota to serve as an assistant for one season at Division II St. Cloud State in 1999 before joining SJU.

“I have spent the last 33 years living in the wrestling community. I have had experience coaching at the Division I, II and III levels as an assistant under many head coaches,” Schiltz said. “I have seen what it takes to build a great program. I am going to work diligently with the current wrestlers and I look forward to recruit young men that will thrive in this community.”

Schiltz is the first non-SJU graduate to lead the wrestling program since Jim Lind, who coached the Johnnies for two seasons from 1979-81. Lind later served as an assistant football coach with the Green Bay Packers from 1992-98, and later the Seattle Seahawks from 2000-08.

New Rules Approved for 2017-2018

0

New rules for the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 seasons were recently published on the NCAA website. A link to the full update appears below, but some of the highlights include:

  • Facial hair is permitted up to 1/2 inch long, provided a proper skin check can be done
  • Wrestler can choose top, bottom, or neutral in a tiebreaker. Previously, one wrestler chose top or bottom for the first 30 seconds, and then the position was reversed in the second
  • Open tournaments may once again have high school entries. Matches against high schoolers will not count on the season record form
  • A wrestler may wrestle a maximum of six matches in one day (forfeits do not count against the limit)
  • Mandatory 30 minute rest between matches (rest time was just a suggestion previously)
  • When a referee is executing a count for a drop-down, and the defensive wrestler is in the process of scoring, the wrestling action can continue and the defensive wrestler afforded the opportunity to score. Once the scoring opportunity has passed, the stall call can then be issued.

The biggest change is the new neutral danger zone takedown. If a wrestler in the neutral position is stopped with his back at less than a 90 degree angle, a count will commence. If the official gets to three before the wrestler improves out of the position, a takedown will be awarded to the opponent. This will take some getting used to for wrestlers, coaches, and officials, and the first few weeks of the season will be interesting.

Notably missing from the final rules was the proposal to eliminate the requirement that wrestlers wear headgear. That proposal did not get past the Playing Rules Oversight Panel.

Lakeland Head Coach Opening – Updated

0

Lakeland University posted a head coach opening yesterday on the school’s website. Dillon Bera has been the coach for the past two seasons at the Plymouth, Wisconsin, school. This post will be updated as more information becomes available.

Lakeland University – Head Coach – Wrestling

Update from Lakeland

Bera resigns as Lakeland head wrestling coach

Dillon Bera has resigned as Lakeland University’s head wrestling coach to explore opportunities outside of coaching.

Bera served as the team’s interim head coach in the 2015-16 season before being named the program’s full-time head coach. He was at Lakeland for three seasons, having served as an assistant coach in the 2014-15 season.

Bera coached two Lakeland national qualifiers, Eddie Terres and Mitchell Fucile. In 2016, he was named the Wisconsin Wrestling Coaches Association District 8 Coach of the Year, the first Muskies coach to receive that honor since Pete Rogers.

Bera came to Lakeland after serving as an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He started his coaching career after a four-year collegiate wrestling career when he was a four-time NCAA Division II All-American at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside from 2010-13.

A national search for a new coach will begin immediately.

Spence returns to Mount St. Joseph – updated

0

Elliott Spence has been named the head wrestling coach at Mount St. Joseph University, according to a post on his Facebook page and a subsequent Intermat article. The Cincinnati native was an All-American for the Lions and replaces Brennan Ryan who held the reins for the 2016-2017 season. Mount St. Joseph took this past season off from competition as they attempt to rebuilt the program. That task will now fall to Spence as the Lions again take the mat in 2017-2018. This post will be updated once an official announcement is made by the school.

Update 6/30 – Story from Mount St. Joseph

Mount alum tabbed to take over wrestling program

Jun 29, 2017
CINCINNATI, Ohio– Mount St. Joseph University Director of Athletics Steve Radcliffe has named Elliott Spence as the new Head Coach of the Lions wrestling program.

Elliott Spence will replace Brennan Ryan as the leader of the Lions wrestling program. Spence is a 2004 graduate of Elder High School where he qualified for the Ohio State high school championship tournament three-times, placing in each of his three appearances. After his stellar high school career Spence decided to stay close to home and wrestle for The Mount. His career at the Mount was a stellar one, as he was a three time NCAA All-American. Placing eighth in the nation in both 2006 and 2007 at 157 pounds. In his senior year Elliott was the national runner up at 149 pounds. He was also a stellar student being selected twice by the NWCA (National Wrestling Coaches Association) Academic All-American.

After graduating from The Mount, he immediately began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Delaware Valley University. In his time at Delaware Valley Spence coached seven NCAA All-Americans and helped the team to two top 10 team finishes. For his efforts he was named the NCAA Midwest Regional Assistant Coach of the Year in 2010.

After leaving Delaware Valley, he returned home to Cincinnati. Returning to the Elder program, taking over as the head coach at West Cincinnati Wrestling Club at Elder Junior High School, where he has been since 2012.

In an interview with intermatwrestle.com Spence said, “I am excited to take over the Mount St. Joseph wrestling program, I grew up a mile from the Mount and can remember going to their camps as a youth wrestler, and never thought that one day i would have the opportunity to lead the program.”

He went on to say, “Mount St. Joseph was once one of the best wrestling programs in the country and has a deep supportive alumni base. One of the first things I plan to do, besides recruit, is to get the alumni involved in the program. The Mount has wrestling alumni are coaching at high schools all over Cincinnati. A lot of them were a part of the program when the Mount was regularly sending wrestlers to nationals and they were returning as All-Americans. Those days will return in the near future.

Mount St. Joseph Director of Athletics Steve Radliffe had this to say about the hiring, “We are very excited to have Coach Spence return to the Mount and our wrestling program. When you combine his passion for the sport and the personal success he had as a wrestler here, I beleive he can provide young wrestlers a high level of coaching and leadership. The future of the Mount wrestling program is in extremely good hands.”

Please join us in welcoming Elliott back home to The Mount!

Willaert moves to Augustana

0

8911

Tony Willaert has been named as the new head coach at Augustana College. Willaert spent the last six seasons at St. John’s and the last three as head coach for his alma mater. Willaert takes over for Eric Juergens who resigned at the beginning of May. The Vikings return two All-Americans from last year’s team that placed 17th in the NCAA Championships.

TONY WILLAERT NAMED TERRY & SANDY SHOCKLEY ENDOWED WRESTLING COACH
6/22/2017 10:58:00 AM

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Tony Willaert, most recently the head wrestling coach at Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, has been name to succeed Eric Juergens as Augustana’s Terry & Sandy Shockley Endowed Wrestling Coach. Willaert will take over in 2017-18 as the 15th head coach in the history of the Viking program.

Augustana Director of Athletics Mike Zapolski indicated Willaert emerged from a solid field of candidates. “I am excited that Tony will be leading the Augustana wrestling program. We were fortunate to have a strong applicant pool for the position, and Tony has the vision and work ethic to continue the positive momentum established by Eric Juergens, said Zapolski. “Tony was an integral part of several solid teams at St. John’s, and has an excellent track record of identifying and developing young men who want to excel in the classroom and on the wrestling mat.”

For the last three seasons, Willaert has led the wrestling program at his alma mater—Saint John’s. He guided the Johnnies to a 6-5 dual-meet record this past season and third-place finish at the NCAA West Regional. He had four of his grapplers advance to the 2017 national meet, giving him a total of nine national qualifiers during his three seasons.

“I am honored to take over the Augustana wrestling program and look forward to picking up where Eric left off,” said Willaert. “I am anxious and excited to get started and I look forward to working with this team. This year’s team has great potential and the future is bright as well.”

Willaert’s charges also excelled in the classroom. Four of his athletes earned National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-America honors this year and the Johnnies posted the fourth-best team grade point average in the nation.

Prior to being named head coach at St. John’s, Willaert was an assistant on the Johnnie staff for three years. During that time, he mentored three All-Americans and seven Scholar All-Americans and helped lead SJU to top-three regional finishes each year.

In addition to leading the Saint John’s program, Willaert has been the head coach of the Central Minnesota Wrestling Club for the last three years. He trained a pair of state high school champions as well as a half-dozen All-Americans at the Freestyle/Greco-Roman National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota. He is also active with Minnesota/USA Wrestling and the NWCA/Fellowship of Christian Athletes Leadership Academy.

A 2011 graduate of Saint John’s, where he majored in nutrition with a sports medicine minor, Willaert was a four-year letter winner. As a senior captain for the Johnnies, he was ranked as high as third in the nation at 197 pounds and qualified for the national meet, advancing to the round of 12. His performance helped SJU finish sixth in the nation.

Willaert inherits an Augustana outfit that finished 17th at the 2017 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships. The Vikings crowned a pair of All-Americans—184-pounder Christos Giatras (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.) and 285-pounder Adarios Jones (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.)—both of whom are scheduled to return for Willaert’s first season in Rock Island.

Ice Hour 22: Jeremiah Tobias

0

Entering his second season as the head wrestling coach at Alma College in Alma, Michigan, Jeremiah Tobias has been there and done that. He’ll talk about it on Episode 22 of The Ice Hour.

As an athlete, Tobias had high aspirations coming out of Manchester High School in Michigan as a four-time state champion. He went to the University of Michigan and spent his time fighting for time in the starting lineup, but opportunities to represent the Maize and Blue beyond open tournaments and an occasional spot start were limited.

When his athletic career ended, a coaching career began, first at the University of Wyoming, then to Division II Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina. Finally, Tobias settled back in his native Michigan where then-Alma head coach Todd Hibbs gave him a call. A few years later, Hibbs is in administration and Tobias is leading his own program, this time at the Division III level.

What’s he like about coaching in Division III, what about the opportunity for growth in Michigan and the story of how an Alma alum and Arkansas businessman has changed the course of the small college’s athletic landscape forever.

Joe Rau qualified by winning the last chance qualifier at 86 kg in Rochester, Minnesota, last month.

Kulchytskyy has been successfully competing in senior level freestyle events since he graduated from Oshkosh in 2014 where he won three NCAA championships for the Titans. He was 4th in the 2015 World Team Trials and came one match away from qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Trials. He was third in the Dave Schultz Memorial back in February was a part of the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club team that won the Clubs World Cup in November of last year. Kultchytskyy was the 2013 and 2014 d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Year.

Joe Rau

He has won the Bill Farrell International Open and has placed multiple times in the US Nationals at weights ranging from 80 kg to 98 kg. He won the 2016 Olympic Trials but missed out on going to Rio when he did not qualify the weight for the United States. This year, he was the runner-up in the Greco-Roman World Team Trials at 85 kg. This loss prompted him to enter the Last Chance Qualifier in freestyle where he emerged victorious with a pair of falls and a pair of tech falls to earn the last spot at 86 kg in the World Team Trials.

Wilmington College Wrestling is Back

Wrestling returns to Wilmington

Wilmington College announced today that the school would bring wrestling back for the 2018-2019 season. The school dropped wrestling in the fall of 2011. The Fightin’ Quakers will become the 8th OAC school with wrestling.

Wrestling returns to Wilmington

Wilmington College is starting wrestling as an intercollegiate varsity sport beginning in fall 2018.

The College will hire a full-time wrestling coach and designate a training space in its athletics complex especially for the sport, which will become its 19thvarsity-level program. WC will field the Ohio Athletic Conference’s eighth wrestling team.

Dr. Terry Rupert, vice president for athletic administration, said the combination of wrestling’s popularity in Ohio high schools and the recent expansion of the College’s athletics facilities makes starting a wrestling program a proposition with a “great opportunity” for success.

“Wilmington College is geographically located in the center of outstanding, high school wrestling programs in the greater Cincinnati, Dayton and Columbus areas,” he said. “We believe many of those high school athleties will wish to take advantage of the opportunity to continue competing in the sport they love on the NCAA Division-III level.”

Rupert said the College’s recent acquisition of the former Wilmington YMCA, which is adjacent to WC’s athletics complex, will allow for a dedicated space for the wrestling program’s training activities.

“The College is committed to hosting a top-level, college wrestling program based on the Division III commitment to the concept of the student-athlete,” he added. “Wrestling, as with our other athletics programs, will not only offer students the opportunity to compete in their sport as a college student, but it also will provide those distinct educational, leadership and character-building components that are unique in D-3 intercollegiate athletics.”

While this program will be new in 2018, Wilmington College has a long history with the sport, which it placed on hiatus in fall 2011. A number of Fightin’ Quaker wrestlers have won conference championships and advanced to the national tournament. Indeed, 2003 graduate Jimmy Wallace won the 2002 national title in the 157-pound weight class and was selected as that tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Rupert said the College will begin recruiting student-athletes immediately.

Jim Wertman (left) takes over after five years as an assistant coach

Jim Wertman has been promoted to become the next head wrestling coach at Delaware Valley University. He replaces Steve Cantrell who will remain in his current position of athletic director. Wertman has been with the Aggies for the past five seasons and has helped the team to a pair of top ten finishes and 12 All-Americans. Cantrell steps down after six years at the helm and a 54-37 dual meet record. Read on for more from Delaware Valley.

Cantrell Steps Down As Wrestling Coach, Will Remain As Director Of Athletics; Wertman Promoted To Head Coach
DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley University is proud to announce that current assistant wrestling coach Jim Wertman has been promoted to head coach as Steve Cantrell has resigned to further concentrate on his growing duties as the Aggies’ director of athletics.

“This was not an easy decision for me as my passion for wrestling and the student-athletes on the team will never waver,” Cantrell said. “However, I knew when I became the Director of Athletics four years ago that this day would eventually come, it is the right time to step away, allowing me to dedicate all of my attention to enhancing and growing the department as a whole.

“What makes the decision a little easier is the fact that Jim will take over as head coach. He has been my right-hand man for the last five years and has played an instrumental role in our success on and off the mat. It is the perfect transition for DelVal and the wrestling program.”

JIM WERTMAN
Wertman has helped the team finish in the top 20 at the NCAA Division III Championships in each of the last four years, including a fifth-place finish in 2013-14 and a sixth-place showing in 2014-15. In 2014-15, the team also won the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) and NCAA East Regional title.

Over Wertman’s five years on the staff, the Aggies have crowned two national champions, 12 All-Americans and nine Scholar All-Americans. Both national titles came from heavyweight Zach Roseberry as he took the NCAA crown in both 2015-16 and 2016-17.

Wertman joined the Aggie wrestling staff after five seasons as a varsity wrestling coach at nearby William Tennent High School. His coaching experience also includes four seasons with the Warminster Spartans youth wresting club.

Wertman served 21 years in the United States Navy and retired in 2011 at the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He is a former Division III wrestler at Lycoming College and also competed with the United States Navy, All Navy team.

Wertman graduated from DelVal with a bachelor’s degree in business administration with an emphasis on sports management. He then received his Master’s in business administration from the institution. Wertman is also the President of Ivyland Printing, LLC.

“I feel extremely excited and humbled at the same time,” Wertman said. “To follow in the footsteps of the great coaches that this program has had and to mentor the student-athletes that come through it is opportunity of a lifetime. I’ve learned so much from Steve over the past five years and am thankful for this opportunity. I look forward to continuing the success that this program has had on the mat and in the classroom.”

STEVE CANTRELL
Cantrell posted a 54-37 record in dual meets during his six years as head coach of the Aggies.  His teams have combined to produce two top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, a Middle Atlantic Conference and NCAA East Regional title, two national champions, 14 All-Americans and 10 Scholar All-Americans.

The first, top 10 finish was the 2013-14 campaign as Cantrell and the Aggies produce an 11-5 record. Three of the four national qualifiers earned All-America accolades as the team finished tied for sixth place and the sixth-highest finish in program history.

The next year, DelVal notched an 11-3 record and captured both the MAC and NCAA East Regional championships in tournaments that were both decided in the final match. Six wrestlers qualified for the NCAAs and four came back as All-Americans as the team just missed out on a national trophy with a fifth-place showing. Cantrell was honored for his work by being named the MAC Co-Coach of the Year.

The last two seasons have been highlighted by Roseberry’s run to national titles as he became just the third wrestler in the program’s storied history to win multiple NCAA crowns and earn All-America honors all four years.

Since becoming director of athletics, Cantrell has overseen initiatives such as the addition of five new intercollegiate sports (women’s golf, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, men’s tennis and women’s tennis), the installment of artificial turf and lights at the stadium, the implementation of a new athletic branding project, and the department’s transition when DelVal obtained University status. During his first year at the helm of the athletic department, Cantrell was also the building project manager for Delaware Valley’s new $15 million Life Sciences Building.

A former Division I wrestler and assistant coach, Cantrell served as a member of the United States Marine Corps for 24 years before retiring from the service in 2007. He was a Commissioned Officer for 16 of those years, holding various positions as a Combat Helicopter Pilot.
