Lally resigns as muhlenberg head coach

1

Shaun Lally

Shaun Lally has resigned from his position as the head coach at Muhlenberg College, the school announced on Friday. Lally spent three years at Muhlenberg, and the team is coming off its first 10 win season in 14 years. In a message to lehighvalleylive.com, Lally explained that he was moving on from college coaching. The current roster has 26 wrestlers on it, and the school is looking for a head coach with the start of official practice just 8 days away. Three year assistant Andrew Drake and new assistant Sonnieboy Blanco will run the program until a new head coach is named.

Blue Ribbon Task Force DI Proposal

1

As reported by Trackwrestling’s Andy Hamilton, a Blue Ribbon Task Force made up of NCAA Division I administrators and coaches has developed a proposal for a new season schedule for NCAA Division I Wrestling. The basic outline of the proposal is as follows:

  • November 10th is the first day of practice
  • Competition begins after fall semester exams
  • Tournaments and dual meet competition leading to a March NCAA Individual Championship
  • Dual meets only after the individual championship leading toward a 16 team dual meet championship contested over two weekends in late April
  • Two NCAA Division I Championships in wrestling, one for a tournament champion, and one for a dual meet champion

There are approximately 240 NCAA wrestling teams. Two thirds of them (and a greater fraction in the coming years) are not set to be affected by this proposed change. In addressing this, the facilitator of the task force, National Wrestling Coaches Association Deputy Director Jim Falls said, “For Division II and Division III, if keeping the season where it is now is best for them, they can do that. And they should do that.”

It is hard to predict how enacting a change like this in Division I would affect Division III wrestling. There is a possibility that Divisions II and III would be further marginalized because their schedules do not match up with the higher profile Division I schedule. Alternatively, if DII and DIII adopt the change as well, it would probably result in both a shortened season and increased expenses for DIII as teams now have to house and feed athletes for a longer part of the winter break. The season would be shortened because there is no way the NCAA will foot the bill for a DIII dual meet championship after the championship tournament.

Changing the schedule for Division III has a much greater effect than it does for Division I. In Division III, the official start date for practice is actually meaningful, as that is the first day that coaches can be on the mat with the wrestlers. In Division I, relaxed rules along with the proliferation of wrestling clubs and regional training centers has resulted in a system where teams can literally practice twelve months a year if they want to. Here’s a video of an Ohio State practice from earlier this week, about two weeks before the “start date” for practice. If you can train as a team whenever you want, shifting the season around does not make much of a difference. However, in Division III, these dates have teeth, so changing the DI season could end up leaving the other divisions behind or bringing them along into a system that is not an improvement.

2017-2018 Regional Alignment Approved

0

The NCAA Division III Championships Committee has approved the regional alignment for the 2017-2018 season. It accepted the proposal sent by the Wrestling Committee that was published here in July. All six regions have either 17 or 18 teams in order to accommodate the 104 teams set to compete this season in Division III. That number is set to increase by at least three next year as two teams are already adding the sport and one will be completing its transition into Division III. The new region names are the Upper Midwest, Lower Midwest, Central, Southeast, Mideast, and Northeast.

Pitt-Bradford to Add Wrestling as Varsity Sport

The University of Pittsburgh-Bradford will add wrestling for the 2018-2019 season. The school is located just south of the New York border and roughly 75 miles east of Erie. Pitt-Bradford has had a club team for the past few years, and the school will elevate the sport to varsity status next year. The school hopes to have a head coach in place by January. See the release below.

Pitt-Bradford to Add Wrestling as Varsity Sport

BRADFORD, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will add wrestling to its NCAA Division III varsity sports beginning with the 2018-19 academic year.

“We’re certainly aware of the passion and enthusiasm students and parents in our region have for wrestling,” said Dr. Livingston Alexander, Pitt-Bradford’s president. “Accordingly, we’ve been planning and organizing the necessary resources to advance our wrestling program from club status to the NCAA intercollegiate level. The time has come to do so, and we’re now poised to begin competition at the Division III level in fall 2018. We hope the wrestling enthusiasts in our area will no longer feel they have to leave the region to study and wrestle.”

The Pitt-Bradford wrestling team will compete in an independent schedule made up of a combination of duals and tournaments. The Panthers will join the 104 other programs in NCAA Division III wrestling, of which 31 compete independently.

All Pitt-Bradford wrestlers will have the opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Division III National Wrestling Tournament, which has followed the Division I regional format since 2012.

Wrestling came to Pitt-Bradford two years ago when a group of students wanted to compete beyond high school. Andrew McRandal, a biology major from Pittsburgh, spearheaded the club along with a group of his peers. They received additional support from Rich Kahle, facilities and fitness manager; and Kathy Moonan, manager of accounts payable. Moonan’s son, Matthew, is studying business management and accounting at Pitt-Bradford and is an assistant coach for Bradford Junior Olympic Wrestling Club while filling in for the Pitt-Bradford wrestling club at times.

A significant boost to the wrestling club came when Kevin and Cindy Keane of Bradford gave a generous gift to Pitt-Bradford that covered the cost of new practice and competition mats and other one-time gear, rent for practice space at neighboring St. Bernard Elementary School, association dues, tournament entry fees, and transportation and lodging for the club’s meets.

Last year’s Pitt-Bradford wrestling club had 12 members, nine coming from the state of Pennsylvania, two of which local from Bradford and Coudersport. Two participants came from New Jersey while one each came from Ohio and New York.

The club competed at the USCAA Wrestling Invitational in State College (Feb. 11), a dual match at Penn State Mont Alto (Feb. 12) and the NCWA Mid-East Conference Championship (Feb. 25).

“I am very excited about our plans to start an NCAA Division III varsity wrestling program at Pitt-Bradford,” said Bret Butler, director of athletics. “Wrestling is not only extremely popular in our region, but it is simply a fantastic sport. We expect interest in our program to be very high, and I personally cannot wait to be sitting in the KOA Arena on a winter evening, watching our team in a dual. This addition will be great not only for Pitt-Bradford, but also for the Bradford sports community.”

A national search for a head coach will begin in October. Pitt-Bradford officials hope the new coach will be on board in January.

The addition of wrestling next fall increases Pitt-Bradford’s men’s sports teams to seven: baseball, basketball, golf, soccer, swimming and tennis. Pitt-Bradford also offers seven women’s sports: basketball, bowling, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball.

Possible new DIII team

0

Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas, appears to be ready to start a new wrestling team that will begin competition in 2018. WrestlingTexas posted an article with some information about the new men’s and women’s teams from new head coach Troy Jewell. While the women’s team is set to compete in the WCWA, the status of the men’s team is a bit up in the air, which explains the headline above. Schreiner is a Division III school in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. No other school in the conference has wrestling, and the nearest DIII wrestling teams are the University of the Ozarks (618 miles), Huntingdon (892 miles), and Westminster (898 miles).

The info in the linked article quotes new head coach Troy Jewell as saying that the team hopes to give out scholarships and will potentially compete first in the National Collegiate Wrestling Assocation (NCWA) which is comprised of a mix of club teams and varsity teams not in the NCAA, NAIA, or NJCAA. Coach Jewell also indicated the possibility that the team competing in Division II, but that would likely only be possible if Schreiner reclassified from Division III to Division II as an entire athletic program.

Former Heidelberg assistant coach Justin Kihn has been named the new head coach at Wilmington College.

Justin Kihn was announced as the new head coach at Wilmington College this week. He will take the reigns and build a team this year before the Fightin’ Quakers begin competition in the 2018-2019 season. He was an All-American at Heidelberg and the OAC Wrestler of the Year as a senior. Wilmington will return to the mats after a seven year absence. Read on for more.

Kihn named @DubC_Wrestling coach
Jul 31, 2017
Wilmington College Vice President of Athletic Administration Dr. Terry Rupert is pleased to announce the hiring of Justin Kihn (pronounced Keen) as the head wrestling coach.

Kihn comes to Wilmington after serving as an assistant coach at Ohio Athletic Conference’s foe Heidelberg.

“We are thrilled to have a coach at W.C. with such impeccable wrestling knowledge and a great set of coaching mentors,” said Rupert. “Justin has major recruiting roots in some of the most fertile wrestling areas of Ohio that will serve our program very well.”

A graduate of Heidelberg, Kihn was the OAC Wrestler of the Year as a senior, and a Division III All-American. He finished fourth nationally (in the 141 weight class) at the NCAA Championships. Kihn was also an Academic All-American his senior year.

His wrestling highlights include being a four-time letter winner while helping the Student Princes claim two OAC championships. He was also a two-time wrestling captain at the ‘Berg.

Kihn has spent the last eight years as a counselor and technician at the nationally renowned Jeff Jordan State Champ camp. During his time with the camp, 682 state champions – including more than 130 from the state of Ohio – have participated in the prestigious camp.

Wrestling returns to WC in 2018 after a seven-year hiatus with the hopes of establishing a strong program and rekindling some of the great traditions of yesteryears. History shows a number of Fightin’ Quaker wrestlers that have won multiple conference championships and advanced to the national tournament. Indeed, W.C. Hall of Famer Jimmy Wallace won the 2002 national title in the 157-pound weight class and was selected as the NCAA National Tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOU JUSTIN KIHN

Jeff Jordan, Founder of Jeff Jordan State Champ Camp and Head Wrestling Coach St. Paris Graham High School

“I am really excited to see a young man like Justin Kihn hired as the head wrestling coach at Wilmington College. He is very connected in southwest Ohio, as well as the rest of the state. I have seen Justin build great relationships with many wrestlers, and he has positively impacted their lives. I’m confident he will build a winning tradition for the Fighting Quakers.”

Frank Baxter, Head Wrestling Coach Kettering Fairmont High School

“I think this is a fantastic hire for Wilmington College! Justin will be a strong, morally sound, and dynamic leader for the Quakers. I’ve known Justin, literally, since he was 5 years old. I’ve seen him commit himself to elite goals and be fanatical about improvement over long periods of time. He will recruit young men of high character and then help them grow on and off the mat. He has a vision for what the Wilmington College program can become and I know he will work extremely hard to make that vision a reality.”

Jimmy Wallace, Wilmington College Hall of Famer

“I’m excited Wilmington College is taking all the right steps to bring in a new wrestling team. One of those steps is hiring the new wrestling coach Justin Kihn. I believe he will do a great job building the program and developing a solid team for the Quakers. He is focused, driven, and has a positive attitude. After speaking with him, I’m confident he will give this challenge everything he’s got.”
