2021 NCAA Championships Canceled

4

In news that is as disappointing as it is unsurprising, the NCAA has canceled all Division III winter championships. 61.8% of 109 teams indicated an intention to compete enough to be postseason eligible. The previously published cutoff was 70%. Of all winter championships, wrestling was the only sport above 52.3% of teams competing. I will have more thoughts tomorrow, but for now, read the official release below.

Division III cancels 2021 winter championships

During its review of the declaration data, the Championships Committee determined participation numbers in all nine winter sports are well below the established threshold to provide a national championships experience. These established thresholds are 60% for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, and men’s and women’s indoor track and field, and 70% for men’s and women’s ice hockey and wrestling.

What will we know today?

0

The NCAA Administrative Committee is set to meet today to possibly make a decision on winter championships including wrestling. There are two questions to answer. First, will the committee make a final decision on wrestling today? Second, will that decision be announced today?

Whether or not the committee will make a final decision depends on the recommendation the committee is believed to have received from the DIII Championships Committee and if there is any possibility the committee will delay a final decision for some reason. The timing of any announcement depends on when exactly the meeting takes place and who needs to know before anything is officially released.

Division III schools were surveyed as to whether or not they expected to compete in the minimum number of competitions in each sport in time for the championship selection process. For wrestling, the minimum dates of competitions this season is three. Those surveys were due back to the NCAA on January 25th. If a school did not respond, that answer was counted as not planning to compete. The NCAA DIII Championships Committee met on January 29th, and it is believed they have made recommendations for each winter sport that the Administrative Committee will consider during today’s meeting. This committee has the authority to accept the recommendations they have received.

Recap:

  • October 1st, 2020 – NCAA Championships Committee affirms 25% reduction in number of qualifiers to the 2021 NCAA Championships. 135 athletes will qualify instead of 180.
  • The Division III Championships Committee affirmed its position that for sports with between 51 and 200 institutions, 70 percent of sponsoring member institutions must sponsor the sport to merit a championship.
  • DIII membership survey due January 25th asking schools if they plan to compete in enough contests in each sport to be eligible for postseason selection (3 dates for wrestling).
  • Championships Committee met January 29th and is believed to have forwarded a recommendation to the Administrative Committee
  • Administrative Committee meets today (February 3rd) and could act on the recommendation.

d3wrestle.com 2020-2021 Rankings #1

5

At long last, here are the first d3wrestle.com Rankings for the 2020-2021 season. This is a tough season to rank without large tournaments and much in the way of inter-conference competition. Some notes on the process:

  1. Wrestlers appearing in the rankings will only be ranked at a weight where they have wrestled. Adjustments will be made for guys who have not wrestled when teams start their schedules.
  2. Only wrestlers who appear as certified on Trackwrestling are ranked. Eventually, certified wrestlers will drop out if they do not compete with their teams.
  3. Since 30+ teams are not competing, the rankings have 18 wrestlers per weight class. As always, the top ten are in order, and the tiers after that are grouped but not numbered.
  4. If there are misspellings of names or mixed up schools, leave a comment so it can be fixed.

A matchup between #2 Wartburg and #14 Coe highlighted this past weekend’s action. A fall at 141 by #2 Kristian Rumph over #4 Riley Wright proved critical in a 23-21 win for the Knights. Kobe Woods secured a major decision at 197 to put the dual out of reach in a match where each team had five wins. Coe picked up three wins over higher-ranked opponents with Alex Friddle winning at 125 over #10 Brady Kyner, Josh Gerke winning at 149 over #10 Brady Fritz, and #10 Kaleb Reeves pinning #2 Jordon Brandon.

Olivet won seven weights in the four-team MIAA individual Championships, and Castleton topped New Jersey City University in the first match ever for NJCU. Former Rutgers and Rider wrestler Rob Cleary picked up the first ever individual win for the Gothic Knights.

Wrestler of the Week: Stanley Bleich

Senior All-American Stanley Bleich Defeated Two Top-3 Nationally Ranked Opponents to Win his 101th and 101st Career Matches

As the number of teams competing increases and three conferences have started their schedules, the Wrestler of the Week award returns. The first d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week for the 2020-2021 season is Stanley Bleich of Baldwin Wallace. In the season debut for Baldwin Wallace, Bleich helped the Yellow Jackets to a 2-0 record against Otterbein and John Carroll. Ranked 6th by the NWCA at 149, Bleich wrestled 157 on Sunday where he defeated NWCA #1 Ryan Whitten of Otterbein and #3 Sam Gross of John Carroll. The wins were the 100th and 101st of Bleich’s career.

Bleich, a senior from North Ridgeville, Ohio, is now 101-20 for his career and 2-0 on the season. He is a 2x NCAA qualifier, 3x regional placewinner, and 2020 Central Region champion. He was also named Ohio Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week for his performance. Baldwin Wallace takes on Ohio Northern and Wilmington on Sunday as the OAC schedule continues.

The ARC, CCIW, and OAC kicked off their conference schedules this past weekend, and a few other teams got matches in as well. Unfortunately, several scheduled events were postponed or canceled as schools grapple with the ongoing pandemic.

Of the three ARC tri meets scheduled for this weekend, just one went off entirely as planned. Buena Vista picked up wins over Simpson and Nebraska Wesleyan, while Simpson topped NWU in the other match at the event. Wartburg won 9 of 10 against Dubuque in a dual that was missing Luther, and the third scheduled tri with Loras, Coe, and Central was canceled. The conference schedule continues next weekend with another slate of three ARC tri meets.

In the CCIW, matches went off as planned. Concordia (WI) swept four duals at home to start the season, and Carthage picked up their first win since 1994 in their return to wrestling. Wheaton was 3-1, while MSOE picked up a pair of wins. In the other CCIW match on Sunday, North Central swept three matches, while Millikin and Augustana each picked up wins.

In the OAC, the quads became tri meets as each event had one team bow out. Stanley Bleich helped Baldwin Wallace to a 2-0 day as he picked up his 100th career win and defeated the #1 and #3 ranked wrestlers at 157. Over at Ohio Northern, the Polar Bears won twice, though Heidelberg did win a pair of individual matches against ranked opponents. Muskingum and Mount Union sat out this weekend with hopes to return for the next event.

Lastly, Averett and Huntingdon traveled to NAIA Allen for a tri. Both defeated the host, and Averett topped Huntingdon 39-10.

Matches at Ferrum and Manchester were postponed.

How the decision gets made

0

The NCAA has published a series of guidelines and Q&As for COVID-19. Each division has their own document which can be found on the NCAA’s COVID-19 website. There is a section on that page entitled Division IIII COVID-19 Resources that has a lot of information about NCAA actions since March of 2020. One document there is the 2020-21 Division III COVID-19 Question and Answer Guide. That document provides information on various sections of the NCAA Division III bylaws and how those rules might be temporarily altered due to the pandemic.

Of particular interest is the section beginning on page 26: BYLAW 18 – CHAMPIONSHIPS. Questions 1 and 4 are pertinent to the wrestling season.

Question No. 1: What is the minimum sponsorship threshold to merit conducting winter and spring championships?
Answer: The Division III Championships Committee affirmed its position that for sports with 50 or fewer sponsoring institutions 90 percent of sponsoring member institutions must sponsor the sport to merit a championship. For sports with sponsorship between 51 and 200 institutions, 70 percent; and sports with 201 or more sponsoring institutions, 60 percent. Note that in order for any championship to be cancelled it would still require being moved through the governance process.

Question No. 4: What are the minimum contest requirements for winter championships consideration?
Answer: Contests minimums to be eligible for consideration to winter
championships have been reduced by 50 percent and are as follows:

  • Basketball: 9
  • Ice hockey: 9
  • Swimming and diving: 4
  • Indoor track and field: 2
  • Wrestling: 3

Any sport with 51-200 teams will need 70% of teams competing to have an NCAA postseason. There are about 113 DIII wrestling teams, and 70% of 113 is about 79. If more than 34 teams drop out, that would take wrestling below the 70% threshold. However, that is not an automatic decision. The last sentence of the answer provides that the decision has to move through the governance process.

Who counts as participating in wrestling? Refer to Question 4. In most seasons, a team has to compete six times to count as a sponsored sport for a school and to be eligible for the postseason. For 2021, that number has been halved to three. Presumably, for a school to count as part of the 70%, it will need to compete in at least three events.

It does not look great for wrestling right now. If 32 teams are indeed out, and a few more are almost certainly headed that way, wrestling will fall below the 70% needed for a championship. Wrestling will not be the only sport affected. Basketball seems to be already well below the 60% needed for their tournament to take place, according calculations from d3hoops.com.

A few questions remain to be answered as the NCAA surveys its membership and prepares to make a call on championships.

  1. What is the latest date the NCAA will make a decision on the championships?
  2. If the tournament is scheduled, but more teams drop out after it is announced as on, will it still take place?
  3. Do teams have to wrestle three event before a certain date, or is it good enough to have them scheduled? What if COVID-19 causes a team to cancel a scheduled match and that drops them under three events? Will they lose access to the championships?

Big Cancellation Update

3

Prior to today, d3wrestle.com has reported only schools that have explicitly canceled the wrestling season. Today’s update includes other schools that have indicated to the NWCA rankings committee that they should not be ranked because they will not be competing, even though there has not been an announcement specifically saying so. As of today, January 18th, there are 32 schools that are believed to be opting out of the 2021 season. The list below differentiates between these schools.

Teams in bold have publicly said no to wrestling (or made a blanket statement for all winter sports) in the 2020-21 season.

Teams in italics may not have explicitly canceled wrestling but have indicated as much to the rankings committee or d3wrestle.com.

Olivet vs. Defiance and Star City Classic

0

A pair of events went off this weekend in Division III. Olivet and Defiance wrestled an unscored event featuring 26 individual matchups, and the Start City Classic took place in Roanoke, Virginia.

At Defiance, Donovan King recorded a five-second pin for Olivet (video here) to highlight the matchups. 2019 Olivet NCAA qualifier Trevor Piggott recorded two falls on the day.

Over in Roanoke, 99 wrestlers took to the mats led by large contingents from Averett, Ferrum, and NCWA Liberty. Top performances were turned in by Averett’s Brandon Woody a 2019 NCAA qualifier, who defeated 2019 All-American Mario Vasquez of Ferrum at 141 and Ferrum’s Elijah Martin who topped 2020 NCAA qualifier George Moseley of Averett. Other notable champs were 2019 All-American Levi Englman (Ferrum), 2020 qualifier Braden Homsey (Ferrum), and two time qualifier Samuel Braswell (Averett).

Roger Williams cancels winter sports; Stevens is still a go for wrestling, despite a potentially confusing release

The list below will now only show schools that have explicitly canceled wrestling for 2021.

Division III wrestling coaches have been told that 70% of teams need to commit to compete this season in order for there to be an NCAA Championships. There are 113 schools that initially intended to compete this season. 70% of 113 is 79.1, meaning there will need to be about 80 schools in action this winter.

This post will be updated as schools make decisions about winter sports in general and wrestling specifically. The schools and conferences that have made announcements so far have gone one of two ways. Some schools are currently planning to attempt to schedule competition on their own even though the conference championships are canceled. Others have canceled all winter sports in their entirety.

Teams in bold have explicitly said no to wrestling (or made a blanket statement for all winter sports) in the 2020-21 season.
