2008-2009 Dual Meet Record: 6-12:  6-8 DIII

Number of returning wrestlers who competed in your 2009 national qualifier: 5

Top returning starters:
141 Eric Meyer 102 career wins, 3rd Midwest
149 Bryan Massong 3rd at Midwest
165 Tim Pope 4th Midwest
184 Pat Truster 2nd Midwest at 197 in 2008, missed last year

125 Cody Stewart Indiana SQ
133 Tommy Fehring 4th OH
141 Ashton Kelchner OH SQ
149 Cory Disbennett OH SQ
157 Isaac Ervin KY state champ, 4x placer
157 Eric Vargas 4th IL
157/165 Tyler Ingram MD SQ
Matt Collins OH SQ
197 Sean Brooks took 5th OH
285 Sean Jameson 2nd OH (MIT transfer)

After an unusual year with no qualifiers, Mount St. Joseph is back and looking to return to the championships.  Four regional placewinners return to a team that will otherwise have a young starting lineup.  Meyer, Massong, Pope, and Truster each have been top 4 finishers in the tough Midwest Regional and should each challenge for a spot at the NCAA tournament.  A good group of freshmen will fill in some of the other starting spots in the lineup.  The highlight of the recruiting class is 4x Kentucky placewinner Isaac Ervin who won the state title last year.  A number of other Ohio state placewinners should challenge for starting spots in the upperweights and lower weights.  Mount St. Joseph has a very tournament heavy schedule, so some of their wrestlers could come into the postseason with the most matches of any DIII wrestlers.

Sunkist International Open

3

Former Division III wrestlers Blake Gillis (Wartburg) and Terry Madden (Hunter) placed in the Sunkist International Open this past weekend in Phoenix.  Gillis was 2nd at 120kg and Madden was 3rd at 74kg. Madden dropped a 2-0,2-0 decision to eventual champ Mike Poeta in the semifinals before defeating current Pitt wrestler (and son of Waynesburg coach Ron Headlee) Ethan Headlee for 3rd.  Gillis defeated former Division II and Midlands champ Les Sigman in the quarterfinals and current Iowa State heavyweight David Zabriskie in the semifinals before losing to former Penn State wrestler and NCAA runner-up Aaron Anspach in a three period bout in the finals.

2008-2009 Dual Meet Record: 15-2
2008-2009 National Qualifiers and All-Americans: Ben Youel (165/2nd), Gabe Youel (184/4th)
Returning All-American:  Gabe Youel
Number of returning wrestlers who competed in 2009 national qualifier: 5

Top returning starters:
125 Joe Norton 3rd Great Lakes
133 Nathan Fitzenreider 13-2 before injury
157 Cowan Brown CCIW Champ
184 Gabe Youel 4th NCAA
197 Vinnie Sapienza 3rd Great Lakes
285 Rodney Knowlton

Top incoming wrestlers:
Jason Bonham (2x MI state placer), Grant Bushby (IL SQ), Danny Deufel, Phil Garbis, Tim Gingerich (2x MI Runner-up), Max Hayden (IL SQ), Jesse Kulger (IL Runner-up), Don McGregor, Ricky Peisker, Trenton Reinoehl (IN state placer), Chris Sellers, Leo Speedy, John Starzyk-Transfer (University of Oklahoma), Mario Sullivan, Taylor Trim (2x MI state placer), Ron Uccardi-Transfer (University of Dubuque), Tyler Wilfley (2x IL state placer)

Despite the loss of NCAA runner-up Ben Youel, North Central brings an experienced team into 2009-2010.  Five seniors in the starting lineup bodes well for another successful dual meet season.  Two time All-American Gabe Youel returns as the lone national qualifier, and he will challenge for an NCAA championship this March.  A full season from the talented Fitzenreider along with the final year of competition for regional placewinners Joe Norton and Vinnie Sapienza will help as well.  North Central is also bringing in a fine recruiting class highlighted by Oklahoma transfer John Starzyk.  Starzyk was a four time Illinois placewinner and three time champ.  He saw some time in the Sooner starting lineup in 2008.  North Central will again be taking on a tough schedule including the Desert Duals, National Duals, Midlands, and Pete Willson Invitational as they seek a third straight CCIW title and a 5th straight top 15 NCAA finish.

Wartburg Preview

1

Wartburg College Knights
Head coach: Jim Miller
Years at school: 18
Career record: 319-30-4
Assistant coaches: Eric Keller – associate head coach/Chris Ortner, T.J. Miller, Jacob Naig and Aaron Wernimont

2008-09 dual record: 15-2-1
2008-09 national qualifiers and All-Americans: Mark Kist (125/3rd), Matt Kelly (133/3rd) Zach McKray (141/2nd), Jacob Naig (149/3rd), Aaron Wernimont (157/1st), Justin Hanson (165/1st), Romeo Djoumessi (184/NQ), Nick Shandri (197/NQ), John Helgerson (285/3rd)
Returning qualifiers and All-Americans: Kist, Kelly and Helgerson
Number of returning wrestlers who competed in 2009 national qualifier: Three

Top returning starters:
Mark Kist – All-American at 125 pounds with third-place finish…Iowa Conference runner-up.
Matt Kelly – All-American at 133 pounds with third-place finish…Iowa Conference runner-up
John Helgerson – Earned All-American honors after third-place finish at NCAA tournament…Iowa Conference champion.

Top incoming wrestlers:
Carrington Banks – 157 – NJCAA champion last year at Iowa Central
T.J. Moen – 3rd place in NJCAA at 149
Nathan Vaske – Iowa High School state champion at 130
Colton Wagner – Iowa High School state champion at 140
Cameron Wagner – Iowa High School runner-up at 135
Tucker Weber – Iowa High School runner-up at 130
Tom Mirocha – Iowa High School runner-up at 130 different class than Weber
Cory Becker – Iowa High School runner-up at heavyweight
Sergio Figueroa – Illinois High School state champion at 119

Wartburg graduated four national champions and a runner up from last year’s national championship team, so the newcomers will be counted on heavily if Wartburg is to make it three in a row.  Thankfully, there are some very talented newcomers who will join Wartburg’s trio of 3rd place winners of a year ago.  Mark Kist, Matt kelly, and John Helgerson will all be national title contenders this year after taking 3rd in 2009.  They are the only returning starters for Wartburg.  However, a pair of junior college All-Americans will fill in nicely, as NJCAA champ Carrington Banks and 3rd place finisher T.J. Moen come over from Iowa junior colleges.  Between the two of them, they won seven Iowa state high school championships to go along with college accolades.  Wartburg has won 17 straight IIAC championships (and 132 straight IIAC duals) and has finished first or second in the nation 15 out of the last 17 years.  Seven starters is a lot to replace and stay on top, but Wartburg has a long track record of success that bodes well for the future.

Orlando Ponce, NQ, 165, JR

Top incoming wrestlers (including transfers) with accomplishments:
Tyler Bowling, 2007 Juco AA @ 174, will wrestle 184 in 2009-2010

Augsburg returns a solid group of six national qualifiers that should again keep them in contention for the NCAA championship.  Returning champ Jared Massey will be a heavy favorite after a dominating performance last year while Jason Adams should be the preseason #1 at 157.  All-Americans Molitor and Witzel hope for more of the same as qualifiers Valek and Ponce look to make it onto the podium.  JUCO All-American Tyler Bowling joins the team at 184, which was the only weight the Auggies did not send a man to the NCAA tournament in 2009.  As always, the big date on the calendar will be the February 4th dual with defending champion Wartburg.

197 Jared Enderton, Iowa State Champ
197 Hoss Roemer, 2nd in Minnesota state

UW-Lax took home the third place trophy at the NCAA championships with five All-Americans, and they also won their 12th straight WIAC title.  This is a strong team with four returning All-Americans including both NCAA champions in Mauseth and Laurent.  Nine starters return as well as injured 2008 NCAA qualifier Brandon Music.  Another strong freshman class featuring four former state champs will help with depth in the room and give some good competition at the lower weights.  The team will be battle tested going into the postseason with a tough tournament schedule and non-conference duals against Luther, St. John’s, and Augsburg to go along with the National Duals.

141 Johnny Siegel 6th IIAC
149 Mark Carey 4th IIAC
157 Seth Pugh 6th IIAC
165 Tyler Burkle 2x All-American (1st ’08, 3rd ’09)

Top incoming wrestlers:
Drew Hinschberger IA champ
Chris LeClere 3rd IA
Scott Carlson IL champ
Alex Burkle IA champ
Kyle Kober IA champ
Nick LeClere – transfer from University of Iowa

Coe had a magnificent season last year and came home with the fourth place trophy.  Five All-Americans return for the Kohawks, and one of the top DIII recruiting classes will bolster that group.  Two time All-Americans Clayton Rush, Tyler Burkle, and Rob Kramer all finished lower on the podium in 2009 than in 2008, and they will be aiming for the top in 2010.  Brnadon Ball and Mitch Sander each made their first appearance at the championships count and brought home some hardware.  Looking forward, only All-American Grothus graduates, and the incoming class includes five state champions.  They may struggle to get in the lineup this year, but the foundation is set for a great future.  Coe should challenge for the NCAA championship this year and may find themselves at or near the top of the preseason national rankings.

Delaware Valley Preview

2008-2009 National Qualifiers and All-Americans: Chris Sheetz (125/8th), Brandon Clemmer (133/7th), Dale Fava (149/NQ), Rocky Mantella (174/2nd), Mike Wilcox (184/1st), Kyle Bilquist (285/4th)
Returning Qualifiers and All-Americans: Fava, Jesse Harrington (149/2008/NQ), and Brian Boudro (2007/NJCAA)
Number of returning wrestlers who competed in your 2009 national qualifier: 4

Top returning starters:
Eric McCann – 133 – Junior – 21-12, sixth at Midwest Regionals at 141 pounds. Will move down to 133.
Zak Andrews – 141 – Sophomore – 19-5, split time with McCann at 141 last year

Martin Porter – 184 – Senior – 21-9, second at Midwest Regional at 197 pounds. Will move down to 184
Brian Boudro – 184 – Senior – injured last two seasons – NJCAA All-American in 2007

Brian McCauley – 133 – Freshman – 2nd at PA Private School State Championships
J.D. Zitone – 285 – Freshman – 2nd at NY State Championships, 4th as a junior

A very balanced and talented lineup that includes a mixture of upperclassmen and newcomers will compete for the three-time defending Midwest Regional champions. Dale Fava (149) is the lone returning national qualifier from last year and head coach Brandon Totten is hopeful that Jesse Harrington (157) can regain the form that led him to the 2008 national tournament after missing last year with an injury. Returnees such as Eric McCann (133), Zak Andrews (141), Justin Barowksi (165), Martin Porter (184) and Jeff Siciliano (197) will look to take the next steps and reach the NCAA Championships. Another returning wrestler to watch is sophomore Charlie Frankel who went 11-7 in limited time at 125 pounds last year. He will battle Zac Haynes for the starting 125 position – a spot that was vacated by two-time All-American Chris Sheetz who transferred to Kutztown.  Delaware Valley was 5th at the NCAA tournament in March, and it will take improvement up and down the lineup if they hope to match or exceed that finish in 2010.

Ithaca returns an experienced team that includes 6 All-Americans and two other National Qualifiers. This is the most experienced team since 1994 when the Bombers returned 5 All-Americans and won their 3rd National Title. Four 2009 All-Americans are back along with two others from previous years. There will be an interesting competition for the starting spot at 133, as it appears Seth Ecker, a semifinalist at 125 last year is moving up to 133 where 2009 All-American Winowich is entrenched. Filling Ecker’s spot at 125 should be 2008 All-American Jon Gregory. Also back is 2007 All-American Justin Seifried at 141. Only All-American John Paxos graduates from last year’s top ten team, leaving Ithaca well situated for the 2009-2010 season. Last year’s 197 national qualifier Carabello is moving down to 184, further strengthening the lineup. On any given day, Ithaca can put seven wrestlers on the mat with NCAA experience, making them tough to beat in either a dual meet or a tournament.

Click below for the d3wrestle.com Preseason Rankings.  We have done our best to account for who is back and who isn’t and any known weight class changes.  As always, the top ten is in order, and the other sections are not.  The first rankings always includes a list of top newcomers at each weight.  Generally, transfers have been placed in the Newcomers section unless they have accomplishments to indicate they should be placed higher.  For example, Wartburg’s Carrington Banks was the NJCAA champion last year, and he is in the top ten at 157 in this ranking.

Future editions of the rankings will have a Top Ten, a Contenders section, and an Honorable Mention section.  Accuracy will improve as the season gets underway and we all find out who is where.  As always a big thanks to the coaches for returning their info sheets and helping move this process along.  It should be another fun year.

Tom Foote – 285 – 2X NH State Finalist, 3rd in NE

The Ephs return All-Americans Malo and Paulish and have 6 all conference wrestlers back on this years team.  Seniors Breitenstein and Rittenburg have been very good wrestling strong competition, having been three year starters and three year All-Conference wrestlers for their first three seasons.  Williams won their National Qualifier last year for only the second time in school history and with 8 returning starters, a strong nucleus of upperclassmen, and a talented freshman group the Ephs are hoping to repeat as NEWA champions.  With 8 starters and both All-Americans returning, Williams has a chance to better last year’s 10th place finish, but they will need to bring more than two wrestlers to the tournament to do so.

Cornell to host USA-Russia Dual

1

From Cornell Sports Information

USA-Russia dual meet scheduled for 7 p.m. on Nov. 18

MOUNT VERNON – A team of top U.S. wrestlers will compete in a freestyle dual meet against a team from Russia on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at Cornell College’s Small Multi-Sport Center.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with wrestling starting at 7 p.m. The local organizing committee is the Hawkeye Wrestling Club.

“I am fired up about this,” said Terry Brands, coach for the Hawkeye Wrestling Club and an assistant wrestling coach at the University of Iowa. “We have high expectations for both teams. We look forward to this event.”

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Information on how to purchase tickets will be announced soon.

The U.S. will be very strong with three Olympic team members, all who were stars at the University of Iowa. The lineup features 2008 Olympians Mike Zadick (Solon, Iowa/Gator WC), Doug Schwab (Coralville, Iowa/Gator WC) and Steve Mocco (Coralville, Iowa/New York AC). Schwab and Mocco both won NCAA Division I titles for Iowa, while Zadick was an All-American for the Hawkeyes. Zadick won a World silver medal for the U.S. in 2006.

Zadick will compete at 60 kg/132 lbs., Schwab at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., and Mocco at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.

Two other U.S. team members train full-time in Iowa City. Paul Donahoe, a past NCAA champion for Nebraska, will compete at 55 kg/121 lbs., and Lloyd Rogers, who starred at Tennessee-Chattanooga, will wrestle at 74 kg/163 lbs.

Also in the lineup is Bryce Hasseman (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs. Hasseman climbed to the No. 2 position on Freestyle Team USA last season while training in Iowa City under coach Terry Brands.

Competing at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. will be Kyle Cerminara (Edinboro, Pa./New York AC), who was the 2009 U.S. Nationals runner-up at this weight class. Cerminara was an NCAA All-American for the University of Buffalo.

Russia is the defending World Team champions in freestyle wrestling, and has been a long-time rival for international supremacy with the United States. The Russian lineup has not been finalized, but should include a number of athletes who have won medals on the international level. The Russian team is also expected to compete in other dual meets in Illinois and New York, as well as wrestle in the New York AC International Open in New York City on Nov. 22.

“We have a very strong group of American athletes,” said Hawkeye Wrestling Club coach Mike Duroe, who is the head wrestling coach at Cornell College. “I have seen so many of our guys develop over the years and I think we will be extremely competitive. The Russians are always tough but there will definitely be a hometown advantage competing so close to Iowa City. We will have a lot of Hawkeye fans there and even more USA Wrestling fans!”

Duroe is excited that Cornell will host the event. His goal is to pack more than 2,000 fans in the arena, which will provide an outstanding atmosphere and intensity for the dual meet.

“We have hosted so many exciting events here at the college and Cornell has an amazing history in the sport of wrestling,” Duroe said.  “It goes back to the 1940s and 1950s when Cornell would sell out the gym for major meets. It is a great thing for Cornell and Mount Vernon to host a meet of this magnitude. It brings positive attention to the college and the community.  The interest in wrestling on the high school, college and international levels is very big here and in the surrounding area and I am confident this international event will get a lot of interest.”

Information on the Russian team lineup and other details about the dual meet will be announced when available.

For information about the event, contact Hawkeye Wrestling Club board member Darin Williams at 319-389-6400.

Last season the Norse felt the sting of not having any juniors contribute in their lineup.  They will feel that again this season by not having any tradional seniors.  They will be helped 2nd semester by having National Qualifiers Nic Barclay and Allyn Plattner return for an additional semester to use their medical hardship year. Luther will rely heavily on a solid Junior class that gained much experience last year as sophomores.  There will be some talented freshmen who will be called on to contribute as well.  The beginning of the season could be challenging, but look for the Norse to make strides near tournament time.  The tough IIAC schedule helps those teams get ready for the postseason, and Luther will be no exception.  The second semester additions plus some time for the freshmen to get some seasoning could make Luther a very different team in January than it will be in November.

This year is a changing of the guard as a new coach comes in and many new leaders take over after graduating 5 starting senior and 11 total seniors. As in the past, though, there is much depth found in the ranks of the roster and most of the new faces in the line up have years of varsity experience. Olivet should again challenge Delaware Valley for the Midwest Region title.  The Comets continue to take advantage of their status as the only Division III team in Michigan as they stock their roster with homegrown talent.  The loss of All-Americans (and high school teammates) Brew and Vanderhyde will hurt, but Olivet will reload.

Norwich Reinstates Wrestling

2

Norwich wrestling has been on a one year reprieve from losing the team with no guarantee of competition beyond 2009-2010.  As of yesterday, the program has been reinstated fully and will compete in the foreseeable future.  High enrollment has brought in more money, making the team viable again.  I am glad to see that the right decision was made.  With 30+ athletes, the wrestling team helps bring in the dollars that keep the school running.  See the article below.

Top returning starters:

Top incoming wrestlers (including transfers) with accomplishments:
Freshmen: Jack DiBurro, Phil Ernst, Steve Kein, Bobby Markowski, Kaare Stokdal and Mark Whitesell
Transfer: Martin Mitchell

Graduation has hit the Hawks hard, leaving them with just three returning starters, and 2008 national qualifier Jared Czarneski will compete in the second semester. The squad has 22 returnees and a roster of 40, but only a handful have been regular starters. Anthony Cirello, Dustin Conner, Nick Herrick, Jay Mahoney, John Battista, Robbie Crothers, Jon Manwaring, Chris Nadeau, Nick Cambi, Dillon Lawler, Chris O’Shea and Ben Kissane are all veterans who will need to step up. The freshmen class is a very good one with quality grapplers from top wrestling states. Several newcomers project to start and the squad could start a number of freshmen for the first time in several years. The wide open weight classes are creating some interesting battles between returnees and newcomers. Even though they have lost some starters, RWU always has a large, experienced roster that will help them work toward a 14th straight winning season and a spot near the top of the NEWA standings.
