HWT C. Pike (NY Place winner 5th 2008, FILA All-American)
HWT P. Kitain (Section runner-up, All-League, All County, PA)

Oneonta will be lead by lone NCAA qualifier J. Wake and conference runner-up J. Lamonica, but returns several solid past starters at 9/10 weight classes with at least 5 having 20+ win seasons.  The accumulation of numerous impact freshmen and transfers should make them a very solid team.  09 freshman standout Kris Stafford will move down to 174 and should show continued success. Cogen won several big matches before injury last year and will be down from 133 to 125. Davy is also down from a cut-throat 141 in the Empire last year to 133. With the addition of 4 D1 transfers as well as NJCAA All-Americans Reese and Wade, competition for the starting spots will be very tough.  The Red Dragons show great potential and could surprise many if they remain healthy this season.

2008-2009 Dual Meet Record: 10-3
2008-2009 National Qualifiers: Jerrad Hoxie (125), Zach Mizer (157), Tony Lawler (133), Craig Fechko (141), Matt Curley (165), Tony Carothers (285
Returning Qualifiers: Zach Mizer, Tony Lawler, Matt Curley
Number of returning wrestlers who competed in 2009 national qualifier: 7

Top returning starters:
Tony Lawler (Jr) NCAA National Qualifier
Zach Mizer (Sr) 2X NCAA National Qualifier
Matt Curley (Jr) NCAA National Qualifier
Ed Bizorik (Sr) 4th OAC
Brad Rice (Sr) 3rd OAC

Heidelberg took six to the NCAA championships last year, and three of those return for 2009-2010.  Two time qualifier Zach Mizer leads the way and is joined by OAC champs Tony Lawler and Matt Curley.  Two other OAC placewinners are back as part of the seven returning starters.  Heidelberg always brings impressive depth to the table and should be able to fill in as needed for the three starters lost.  A large roster of mostly Ohio wrestlers makes the team strong and has them poised to win their 5th straight OAC championship.  2009 was the first year since 2005 that Heidelberg missed out on an All-American, and head coach Jason Miller hopes to get a new streak going in 2010.

Career Record at school: 22-18-1

2008-2009 Dual Meet Record: 10-6

Top returning starters:
141 Dave Alsieux  3rd Metropolitan 20-10
157 Owen Vernon 3rd Metropolitan  24-8
165 Matt Regan 2nd Metropolitan 19-11

Top incoming wrestlers:
Jose Vega 4 time NJ State Qualifier (133-18)
Nick Bach 4th, 5th NJ States (128-17)
William Livingston 1st, 3rd NJ States, transfer from Virginia Tech/Ohio State
Dan Butcher 6th NJ States (136-18)
Glen Cannici 5th NJ States (115-11)
Jionni LaValle 5th NJ States
Russell Boardman NJ State Qualifier

With three returning conference placewinners and a very strong recruiting class, Centenary may have their best season yet.  Matt Regan was a Metro finalist, while Owen Vernon and David Alsieux each placed third.  Four other starters return, but they will be challenged by a good group of freshmen.  Four New Jersey state placewinners join the team for their first year of competition along with some state qualifiers.  A top transfer is Will Livingston, a former NJ state champ who has wrestled at both Ohio State and Virginia Tech.  He has been reported as wrestling for the Cyclones this year, but he has yet to appear on the NWCA website showing which wrestlers have completed their weight certification.  He will be one to keep an eye on this season.  Centenary should again have balance up and down the lineup and should be able to win some dual meets against tough competition.

Top incoming wrestlers:  Kyle Sheridan 215 lbs, Devan VanAuken 215 lbs and Anthony Facchini 112 lbs all qualified for the 2009 NYS High School Championships.  Matt Callari and Omar Santiago both finished 2nd in state championship qualifier their senior year. Two transfers Charlie Nunez (133) and Joe Pesce (285) also finished second in NY State high school qualifier.

The Lakers will be much more experienced this season as graduation took only two starters although they will need to replace 3x NCAA qualifer Derrick Smith at 141 pounds.  21 athletes return from last seasons team and will give the team a veteran presence as they prepare for a tough dual meet schedule and the competitive Empire Conference Tournament.  133 and 184 are weights where freshman may challenge to start right away, and a few NY state qualifiers will challenge at other weights. Juniors Cam Mills and Joel Ford will move up the 174 and 285, respectively as Oswego hopes to again be represented at the NCAA tournament.

Top incoming wrestlers:

Jack Flack–transfer Purdue
Andy Dieringer–4th WIAA
Tyce Shirley, Andy Rutke, Andrew Pettit
Kyle Logsdon–2nd IHSA

Whitewater had three All-Americans for the first time in 20 years and also finished with an undefeated record against Division III teams, beating eventual NCAA 3rd place team UW-Lax in a WIAC dual.  Senior Austin Bautista is back for another run at the 141 title after losing a single match in the semifinals last year.  He is one of six seniors who will form the heart of the lineup for the Warhawks along with sophomore national qualifier Max Oldenburg.  There is good depth at a few weights where multiple WIAC placewinners will compete for time.  The loss of two All-Americans will hurt, but the hope is that the rest of the team will take a step up this season and move Whitewater up the WIAC standings.

285 Taylor Stroud 2x Iowa Placer (transfer)
Ethan Hess 3rd place IA State
Branden Cline IA State Placerwinner
Jeff Sand IA State Qualifier
Kasey Green WA State Placewinner
Austin Pottebaum IA State Qualifier

Head Coach Clint Manny returns for a second season at the helm of his alma mater, and the team will have a good mix of veterans and newcomers.  Caleb Brus and Calvin Barber were IIAC placewinners last year while Curtis Barber was an NCAA qualifier in 2006.  Five state placewinners will bolster the lineup and compete for starting spots.  Transfers at the top and bottom of the lineup will surely help, as both Linderman and Stroud were multiple time Iowa placewinners in high school.  Competition is stiff in the IIAC, but the compeititon will help the Storm get ready for a postseason run.

Only two starters are gone from last year’s turnaround at Waynesburg.  After winning two matches total in the previous three years, Waynesburg got a new coaching staff and jumped to a 10-4 record.  Coach Headlee and Coach Yates capitalized on long high school coaching careers in the area to build up the roster quickly.  The result was a winning season and two NCAA qualifiers.  Three placewinners from the region return along with the talented Byerly who missed the postseason with an injury after compiling a 14-3 record.  The schedule is beefed up this year with matches against Pitt (where Headlee’s son Ethan wrestles and his other son wrestled), Columbia, and Eastern Michigan.  This year, Waynesburg will be looking for their first All-American since Shawn Whyte.

125  Casey Krahenbuhl, 2008 WI SQ
165  Koty Schwarz, IL SQ
285  Ralph Loftin, 2008 WI Sectional placer

Head Coach Bret Corner graduated five starters and will look to boost the lineup with a talented incoming freshman class. Gone are national qualifier Joe Massman and Great Lakes Regional placer Adam Schultz (197), but top returners that came on strong at the end of the year include Kurt Kemnitz (133) and Josh Nord (174).  Medical redshirts Anthony Myers and Aaron Bergen return for their senior year.  A number of state placers and qualifiers join the team this year.  Illinois finalist David Tuomi is the most accomplished and should step right in for the departed Massman.  The Falcons will look to improve on their 2nd place finish in conference and 8th in the Great Lakes Region in 2009.

Justin Clarke (141/149) – NJ Qualifier
Joe Grippi (133) – 2nd NY
Joe Ortiz (125/133) – NJ Qualifier
Mike Rose (125) – NY Qualifier

Springfield returns six starters from last year’s 4th place NEWA team including four NEWA placewinners that will form the backbone of the lineup.  National qualifier Chris Brown will be missed, but Springfield’s depth will help them fill that spot with an experienced wrestler.  There are upperclassmen returning at almost every weight, so the competition will be fierce for starting spots, as their typically large recruiting class includes numerous state placewinners and qualifiers.  They start the season at the Ithaca invitational and hope to have the lineup questions sorted out by the time they hit the conference schedule in January.

IL State Qualifiers: Kyle Bridgeman, Robbie Brink, Travis Full
WI State Qualifiers: Zach Coslett, Brad Hesebeck

Transfers:
Rory Edge 2x WI champ
Garrett Kite 2x WI finalist

Platteville returns 2x All-American and 3x WIAC champ Jesse Milks at 157, but it looks like a lot of the teams strength will come from incoming wrestlers.  After finishing near the bottom of the WIAC tournament standings, Platteville has reloaded nicely and should be able to challenge in the future.  The incoming freshman class is highlighted by 4x Illinois state champ Seth Milks who joins his brother at Plattevill.  Three other state placewinners and five state qualifiers make up the rest of the freshman highlights.  Two impact transfers come in from Iowa Central Community College.  Both Rory Edge and Garrett Kite were Wisconsin state finalists.  Additionally, Vinny Alber returns after a year away.  He won 29 matches in 2007-2008 and will be counted on in the middle of the lineup.  The success of the team may depend on how the new wrestlers fit into the program and how the lineup shakes out with all the newcomers.

2008 was a transitional year for Wheaton.  Head Coach Dan Weber was a one year appointment while a more permanent coach was found.  Wheaton did pretty well for themselves in enticing Olympian and USOEC Greco-Roman coach Jim Gruenwald to make the move from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to the suburbs of Chicago.  In addition, the team had their first national qualifier and All-American since 2003 in Toby Boltz.  Boltz has graduated, and a small team greets the new coach as he works to start the next era of Wheaton Wrestling.  A pair of 5th place finishers at the Great Lakes Region will lead the way for the Thunder in senior Justin Tomal and junior Justin Marble. 197 Matthew Griffiths has been a two sport athlete for the past two years but has decided to focus on wrestling for his last two years of college.  A number of other starters return and put their year of experience starting as freshmen to good use.

A few wrestlers dropping in weight along with some top notch incoming wrestlers has Lycoming ready for a good season in 2009-2010.  Chris Dahlheimer leads the team after an All-American finish last season and three other Empire placers join him.  The top newcomers are Derek Leiby, a PA AA placewinner, and Isaiah Britton.  Britton was a 2x Pennsylvania AA state champion (’03 & ’04) and three time finalist who is a transfer from North Carolina.  He returns home to Williamsport after a high school career at nearby Loyalsock.  The Warriors tied for third in the Empire last season, andt hey hope to knock off one of the top two while holding off Messiah to maintain their position.

Gary d’Aquin – 2x LA runner-up
Colten Moore – 2x IA placer
Mary Myers – 2x IN placer
Alex Peitz – 7th IA
Wyatt Bauman – 8th IA
Brandon Tabor – FL SQ

After back to back top ten finishes in 2008 and 2009, Cornell is back and aiming for a third.  Nick Nothern was a surprise finalist coming from the 8th seed, and was Cornell’s first finalist in 13 years.  Fellow All-American Kevin Donahue and national qualifier Ryan Mulnix join Nothern to help Cornell make a run in 2009-2010.  Three other IIAC placewinners are back as Cornell also must replace the points generated by 2x All-American Kyle Kehrli.  Between the incoming wrestlers and a solid set of backups from 2008-2009, Cornell is well situated to again have a winning season in the tough IIAC, and the improvement of the returners along with help from newcomers could propel the Rams again into the national top ten.

Wesleyan returns 3 New England finalists and 2 NCAA qualifiers.  Bloom, Hurd, and Berkovic form a strong nucleus for 2009-2010.  The team also returns a 3rd place qualifier at HWT. and 2 other New England placers.  With 8 starters back, another winning season should be on tap for the Cardinals.  184 and 197 will need to be filled with either last year’s reserves or this year’s freshmen.  A good freshman class should provide some depth and push some of the incumbents for mat time.  Greg Tannenbaum and Kyle Roosa are both 2x NY qualifiers that may have to wait their turn behind the senior returning NCAA qualifiers Bloom and Hurd.  With most of their duals against other NEWA teams, Wesleyan should be ready for the NEWA Championships just up the road at Western New England.

With 9 of 10 starters returning and addition of quality freshmen and transfers, TCNJ should be strong again with intense competition for starting spots.  141 to 174 should be particularly competitive with multiple solid wrestlers at each weight.  The return of Branham and DiColo to use their medical redshirt years is a big boost to the team, as both have national experience.  The season starts on November 7th and could be a big day for TCNJ.  On that day, they will take on Norwich and will raise a banner celebrating the 600th win in program history, an achievement reached last season.  Also, a victory that day would be the 500th of Head Coach Dave Icenhower’s career, making him just the fourth NCAA wrestling coach to reach that milestone after Dale Thomas, Jare Klein, and John Reese.
