WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week: Mike Morin

0

The d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week is Mike Morin of Southern Maine.  This week, Morin was victorious at the Roger Williams Invitational while also taking Outstanding Wrestler Honors.  He was also named the Pilgrim League Wrestler of the Week.  At the tournament, Morin was 4-0 and defeated Messiah’s Trent Zempel in the finals for the second consecutive year.  It was Morin’s third consecutive Roger Williams championships at 165.

Morin, a senior from Fryeburg, Maine, is currently ranked #1 in both the d3wrestle.com and NWCA individual rankings at 165.  Last season, Morin was undefeated coming into the NCAA tournament and placed fourth to become the first ever All-American from Southern Maine.  He also became the second 2x NCAA qualifier after earning his second NEWA championship in 2009.  His career record stands at 93-16.  Morin and the Southern Maine Huskies will return to action Saturday at the Oneonta Red Dragon Invitational.

Metro Rankings #1

Metro Preseason Rankings October 19, 2009

Note: Metro Rankings only include wrestlers who have competed so far.  The d3wrestle.com rankings have primarily used the weights at which the wrestlers have competed, even if it has been rumored or reported that a wrestler will be going to the next weight down.  This ranking may be a bit messy as all teams have not yet started, and nobody is quite in midseason form.  This causes some upsets that one might not expect.  This ranking has tried to strike a balance between a wrestlers body of work and recent performance in the first two weeks.  Wrestlers who have previously been All-Americans and NCAA qualifiers may appear over wrestlers who have defeated them as a result of this consideration.  As the season gets further underway, these things will sort themselves out.

d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week: Aljamain Sterling

2

The first d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week for 2009-2010 is Aljamain Sterling of Cortland.  This past weekend, Sterling won the Ithaca Invitational and was awarded Most Outstanding Wrestler.  During the last three rounds of the tournament, he defeated the #3, #2, and #1 seeds in order.  In the semifinals, he defeated Seth Ecker of Ithaca, a 2009 All-American at 125.  In the finals, he defeated Chad Winowich of Ithaca, a 2009 All-American at 133.

Sterling, a junior from Uniondale, New York, transferred into Cortland from Morrisville last year.  In 2009, he was the Empire Conference runner-up (to Winowich) at 133 lbs.  He compiled a 32-11 record wrestling at 133 and 141 for the Red Dragons.  Cortland next competes this weekend at the John Reese Duals at Wilkes University.

Johns Hopkins Preview

Johns Hopkins Blue Jays
Head Coach:  Keith Norris
Years at Johns Hopkins:  5th Season
Career Record at Johns Hopkins:  21-39
Assistant Coaches:  James Gillispie, Marco Priolo, Isaac Katz

2008-09 Dual Meet Record:  4-9
Returning NCAA Qualifier: Patrick Stanley (165/2008)

Top Returning Starters
141 – Jr. – Rocky Barilla / 24-10
149 – So. – Michael Testa / 23-16 @ 133
174 – Jr. – Patrick Stanley / 21-15 in 07-08 • CC Champion
184 – So. – Hector Cintron / 27-15

Top Incoming Wrestlers
Reid Mosquera (197) – National Prep All-American
Paul Marcello (133) – Florida State Champion
Matt Nelson (141) – Ohio State Qualifier

Johns Hopkins head coach Keith Norris has a talented young roster – with young being the key word.  There is not one senior on the Blue Jays’  25-man roster.  Junior Rocky Barilla and sophomores Michael Testa and Hector Cintron all won 23 or more matches last season and the team is bolstered by the return of junior Patrick Stanley, who won 21 matches and a Centennial Conference title as a freshman two years ago before spending last year at UNC.  Testa is moving up 2 weight classes after spending most of last year at 133.  If Norris and the Blue Jays can find consistency at the top (125 & 133) and bottom (285) of the lineup, they could be a dark horse contender in the race for the Centennial Conference title.  Injuries cost the Blue Jays a lot of wrestlers last year, and improved health will be a great help as well.
