WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week: Steve Poffenberger

1

The holiday week was slow in Division III, but there was a performance worth noting as the d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week.  Steve Poffenberger of Augustana knocked off then-number one ranked Nick Nothern of Cornell 4-3 during a dual meet between the two schools on November 25th.  Poffenberger and Nothern were tied at 3 after the second set of tiebreakers, but Poffenberger held the riding time edge and secured the victory over last year’s NCAA runner-up at 133 pounds.

Poffenberger, a freshman from Paw Paw, Michigan, is in his first year of college competition.  He has compiled a 6-7 record to this point including a 5th place finish at the Knox Invitational.  He was the 119 lb. runner up in Michigan in 2008.  Augustana next takes to the mats tonight in a CCIW match at North Central College.

WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week: Tony Valek

4

The d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week is Tony Valek of Augsburg.  Valek was the champion in the 149 lb. Gold Division at the Auggie Brute-Adidas Open this past weekend at Augsburg College.  Valek, an NCAA qualifier at 141 lbs. last year, won four matches to take the championship.  In the finals, he defeated defending NCAA Division III champion at 149 lbs. Matt Mauseth of Wisconsin-La Crosse.  In the semifinals, he defeated UW-La Crosse freshman Brady Schrupp.  Schrupp had also defeated Mauseth the previous weekend.  Valek is now 4-0 on the year after his season-opening win.

Valek, a sophomore from Belle Plaine, Minnesota, was 32-13 as a freshman last year at 141 lbs.  He qualified for the 2009 NCAA tournament after a 3rd place finish at the Great Lakes Regional and a victory in the true 2nd match against Virgil Pope of MSOE.  At the NCAA tournament, he was 1-2, with both losses coming to eventual All-Americans.  He is the brother of former Augsburg three-time All-American Ryan Valek.  In the latest d3wrestle.com Rankings to be released Friday, Valek is ranked 3rd at 149 lbs.

As a side note, this week had a number of very good Wrestler of the Week candidates worth mentioning.  Tyler Branham of TCNJ won the East Stroudsburg Open and defeated five D1 wrestlers along the way.  Charlie Curran of Elmhurst won the Concordia Open and defeated All-American Jesse Milks.  Jason Pyle of Luther defeated ISU starter Mitch Mueller at the Kaufman-Brand Open.  Chris Sandy of Wartburg won the Concordia Open and defeated #2 ranked returning All-American Austin Bautista in the finals.
