WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week Nick LeClere

1

The d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week is Nick LeClere of Coe College. This past weekend, LeClere was 4-0 with three major decisions at 165 lbs. at the Desert Duals, helping #3 Coe to a 4-0 record on the day. LeClere’s one regular decision was a 10-6 win over the previously #1 ranked Mike Morin of Southern Maine. LeClere came back from a 5-2 deficit against Morin to win 10-6.

LeClere, a sophomore from Coggon, Iowa, is now 16-1 on the year with wins at the Loras Open and Dick Walker Invitational. His only loss was 6-5 to Ryan Morningstar of the University of Iowa. LeClere previously spent two years at the University of Iowa, redshirting in 2008 and wrestling sparingly in 2009 before transferring to Coe for the 2009-2010 season. In the latest NWCA rankings released after the Desert Duals, LeClere has moved into the #1 spot at 165 as a result of his win over the top-ranked Morin. LeClere is the brother of teammate Chris LeClere and University of Iowa 141 pound starter Dan LeClere. Coe takes a break from competition until January 3rd when they travel to the Cornell Matman Invitational.

d3wrestle.com Rankings #3

17

Here are the latest d3wrestle.com Rankings.  Several weight classes seem to have a lot of parity this year, so there can be some pretty significant shakeups in the rankings from week to week.  Also, this last period had a few wrestlers bump up and defeat highly ranked wrestlers the next weight class up.  Generally speaking, we have moved the winners up based on a win over a quality opponent, but we have not moved the losing wrestler down much, if at all, as that loss was not to anyone below them in their weight.  If the winning wrestler appears to make a permanent move up to the higher weight, that will be considered in the next set of rankings.  Also, a few wrestlers have been moved to different weights based either on recent performance or outside information.  This will all shake out as the season continues to progress.

WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week: Jake Strausbaugh

Strausbaugh

The d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week is Jake Strausbaugh of Wabash College.  Strausbaugh won the Indiana Little State Tournament this past weekend as the #3 seed at 141 lbs.  He advanced to the semifinals with a fall and a major decision where he met #2 seed Thomas Pompei of Trine.  He defeated Pompei with a third period fall and moved on to the final against #1 seed and returning 2x All-American and 3x NCAA Qualifier Austin Bautista of UW-Whitewater.  Strausbaugh upset Bautista in a hard fought 7-6 match (video here) to take the title and avenge a loss from earlier this season.

Strausbaugh, a freshman from Orrville, Ohio, is now 15-4 on the year with a 3rd place finish at the Concordia Open to go along with his Little State championship.  Last year, he wrapped up his high school career with over 140 wins and became the first ever three time Ohio state placewinner from high high school after a fifth place finish in the Ohio Division II state tournament.  Wabash next competes this Saturday at the North Central College Invitational in Naperville, Illinois.
