285 Tyler Maher (2x NHSCA All-American, 2nd in NC, 136-25)

Season outlook:
Stevens will have a very new look from a year ago after the graduation of several contributing seniors. A deep recruiting class will help fill the openings left by the departed seniors and will help build up depth behind the returners. The team’s top wrestler is 2x All-American Ryan Bridge, and the Ducks are hoping to get a full season out of him and a third trip to the podium where he will challenge for an NCAA title. 2x Centennial champ Ryan Dormann is back looking for a third trip to the championships, while Joey Favia returns after a year training with the Hawkeye Wrestling Club in Iowa looking for his first conference title. Both Favia and Dormann will be strong contenders to place in La Crosse. This Ducks team has a chance to end USMMA’s stranglehold on the Centennial championship, and it will be depending on the performance of some new wrestlers to get the job done.

Ian Kelton(197) Ohio SQ
Ryan Sandwith(184) Indiana SQ

Season outlook:
Wabash returns 9 of 10 starters from the 2011 Midwest Regional Runner up squad, which placed all ten in the top 4. Highlighting those returners are a pair of outstanding wrestlers in All-American Greg Rhoads and former NCAA qualifier Jake Strausbaugh. Both topped 40 wins last year and will be aiming to return to the NCAA Championships. Jake Moore just missed qualifying last year after a runner-up finish in the Midwest Regional. The incoming class will help provide depth in some needed area and provide some great battles in the room all season long. With nine starters back, breaking the lineup will be tough, but any newcomers that manage to pull it off will only strengthen the Little Giant lineup.

Returning Qualifiers and All-Americans: Carl DeLuca (2011), Zach Mueller (2010), Sam Engelland (2009, 2010, and 2011)

Top returning starters:

133- Zach Mueller Sr.- NQ 2010
141- Alex Mueller Sr.- Returning from an elbow injury two seasons ago
149- Jose Quintana Sr.- 4th at WIAC (157)

184- Sam Engelland Sr.- 3x NQ
197- Ryan Heath Sr.- 5th at WIAC (HWT)

Top incoming wrestlers:
197- Jody Vanlaanen- Wisconsin State Champ (Ashwaubenon, WI)
HWT- Brandon Clapper- Tri County, WI
141- Thomas Dahlke- Shiocton, WI

Season outlook:
Health will play a big role for the Titans this year, as a few wrestlers are returning from injury to bolster a lineup featuring three former NCAA qualifiers. Sam Engelland is back looking for a fourth trip to the big dance but his first time on the podium. The bottom of the lineup features a pair of strong wrestlers in 2011 qualifier DeLuca and 2010 qualifier Mueller. Even with those three in the lineup, the top Oshkosh wrestler might be sophomore Nazar Kulchytskyy. He put in an injury shortened season last year as a freshman, but he was 12-0 with seven falls including a convincing win over 3x All-American Matt Mauseth of La Crosse. Fresh off a summer training in his native Ukraine, if he is healthy he will be a top contender at 157. The lineup will be mostly seniors this year save for Kulchytskyy and transfer Jody Vanlaanen, a former state champ who had been playing football at Northern Iowa. With this kind of experience in the lineup, the Titans will be a tough matchup for their competition in the WIAC and could put a few on the podium in La Crosse come March.

184 Mitch Steed reshirt freshman Oregon State University Transfer, Multiple state place winner Washington
149/157 Peter Huang, Texas state champ 145, multiple state place winner
149 Mark Savenok multiple state placewinner, IL
Dan Mitchell state placewinner NC 3rd
William Byrd Alabama State Champ 152
174 Johann Sarna 171 Texas Prep State Champ

Season outlook:
Head coach Jim Gruenwald has put together a very strong recruiting class as he continues to rebuild the Wheaton program. Last year’s team featured only one wrestler who put together a winning season through the entire season. Justin Marble went on to qualify for the NCAA tournament, but he is now on the bench as an assistant coach. The lineup for Wheaton will experience almost a full turnover from a year ago, as a number of talented transfers and state placewinner freshman will be taking over. It is a good group, and the Thunder could fill all ten weight classes for the first time in quite a while. This young group could sneak up on some teams this year, though their best success may be a year or two away.

133 Trevor Medlang PA 3 X Wpial Qual
174 Danny McNamara Ohio State Placer
141 Jake Vincent Michigan State Qual
HVT Collin Vozar Ohio State Qual

Season outlook:
John Carroll could potentially return ten former starters into an experienced lineup. Of these, John Cobos and Greg Ryan were both one step away from the NCAA tournament, finishing 2nd in the OAC behind wrestlers from Mount Union. six other possible Blue Streak starters have been conference placewinners in their careers, giving the team a balanced look that should be competitive in every dual meet thanks to its experience. A good group of incoming wrestlers including a lot of state qualifiers and placewinners will bolster the lineup and perhaps challenge to start. The OAC has been improving, so John Carroll will have to keep improving right along with it as Coach Volkmann enters his 26th year at the helm.

165 CALEB CRUMP NJCAA NATIONAL QUALIFIER
174 PAUL CAFONE NEW JERSEY REGION CHAMP
184 KYLE HUMPHRIES MA STATE CHAMP

Season outlook:
The Rhode Island College Anchormen anxiously await the start of the 2011-2012 season. Injuries placed a significant damper on the closing of last season, thus they have been chomping at the bit to get back in the circle and compete.  The Anchormen locked in their toughest schedule in Coach Jones’ tenure.  The have added the Wartburg Desert Duals (Vegas), NWCA National Duals (Springfield, IL), and on top of Lycoming’s Budd Whitehill National Duals, Springfield’s Doug Parker, and a dual with division I Brown University.

The lineup provides a great mix of veterans and talented newcomers. RIC will count on Brandon Gauthier to be the spark, as the returning All-American aims for a second trip to the podium. Three-time all-Conference and nationally ranked in 2011, Michael Trasso looks for his first trip to nationals. Before being injured prior to the national qualifier at 141, Trasso’s only 2 losses were to All-American Donahue 4th and 8th seed Alsieux; however, Trasso has bulked up and will go 149 in 2012.  Moving down after taking off a year is All-New Englander Scott Legacy. Legacy will progress down to 141 as the Anchormen schedule heads to national competition. Brian Nicoll returns at 285 after a year off as well. Rhode Island hopes for better luck with injuries, and if the new wrestlers and those who missed last year can get off to a good start, the team could challenge for the NEWA title.

2010-2011 Dual Meet Record: 10-8-1 (7th NEWA)
2010-2011 National Qualifiers and All-Americans: Qualifiers Ethan Raymond 165 and Zack Bates, 174

Top returning starters:

Steve McCarthy(so) –  133 2011 NEWA 6th
Andrew Frazer (sr) –  197 2008 NEWA 6th, 2010 NEWA 5th, 2011 NEWA DNP Injury second round

Top incoming wrestlers:
Ryan Cassidy 174, Mass All State Champion, 6th New Englands
Jonathan Murray 125/133 transfer

Season outlook:
Bridgewater State looks to continue its winning ways, but it will be a rocky start as the Bears lost Senior Captains and National Qualifiers Ethan Raymond and Zack Bates, and they have increased the strength of their schedule. Top returning starter Ken Francis is bumping up to 133 and will be a favorite at that weight in the NEWA. Andrew Frazer is dropping a weight class to 184, while Steve McCarthy is going to be up at 141. The team is looking for its younger wrestlers to make the jump to the next level. 2nd semester will be interesting as Pat Walsh (197/285) transfer from The Ohio State will be eligible to wrestle after a year in residence.

Lee Kemp joins Warhawk wrestling

Lee Kemp, one of the most accomplished wrestlers in the history of the sport, has joined the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling staff.

“What an opportunity for UW Whitewater and our wrestlers and staff,” UW-W head coach Tim Fader said. “I am really excited for the Warhawk wrestlers in our program. This is a chance for our guys to really learn and take from one of the best wrestlers our country has ever had. I have the opportunity to hear Lee speak and relate to younger wrestlers and have always been impressed. He has coached at the highest level of our sport. He is more than “just interested” in topics that can make a difference in a college wrestling career — nutrition, technique, motivation and preparation. I am excited to be around that level of knowledge and that type of success and achievement. He is a very sincere and inspiring person and we welcome Lee Kemp to our program,” Fader added.

Kemp’s resume’ is so extensive that his name transcends the sport of wrestling.

His collegiate career came just 45 miles from Whitewater at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Kemp went 143-6-1 for the Badgers, with five of those losses coming in his freshman year when his first year accomplishments included a win over Dan Gable and a second place finish in the NCAA championship. He lost the championship match on a split referee’s decision in overtime. That would be Kemp’s only loss in NCAA championship competition as he won titles in 1976, 1977 and 1978. His 39-0-0 record in 1976 was the only undefeated season in Division I wrestling. He went 103 consecutive matches without a loss (sixth best ever), and 87 in a row without a loss or tie (fourth best ever). Kemp was a three-time Big Ten champion, and three time Midlands Tournament winner.

Kemp’s international career spanned the globe. He won three world championships (Mexico City 1978, San Diego 1979, Alberta, Canada 1982), the first coming at the age of 21, just after finishing college and the youngest American to win a world or Olympic title at the time. Kemp added gold medal honors in World Cup competition four years in a row (1979-82), the first American to accomplish that feat. He also won Pan American Games gold medals in 1979 and 1984, as well as seven national championships (Amateur Athletic Union and United States Wrestling Federation). He was selected for the 1980 U.S. Olympic team, but the U.S. boycotted the games in Moscow, Russia (USSR at the time).

His coaching career, like his competitive career, came at the highest levels of the sport. Kemp coached the U.S. freestyle team that competed in the 2007 World Championship in China, coach the U.S. freestyle team at the World Junior Championship in 2007 in Beijing, China, and he was the head coach of the 2008 U.S. Olympic team that competed in Beijing.

Kemp’s honors and awards, just the highlights, include some of the most coveted in sport. Amateur Wrestling News named him the Outstanding Freshman in 1975 and the Outstanding Sophomore in 1976. The same publication honored him on the “Post 1958 Era All-Time Collegiate Wrestling Team”. He was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1989, one of six hall of fame selections he has earned. That group includes the George Martin Wrestling Hall of Fame (1983) in Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame (2009), and the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame, conferred during the 2008 Olympics. He was named the United States Wrestling Federation Man of the Year in 1978, and was a two time finalist for the Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the United States.

“Five years ago I made an important decision to get back into wrestling and use my background and experience in wrestling and nutrition to make a positive impact on the athletes I was working with,” said Kemp. “I really enjoy getting on the mat and working with the athletes, and realize that I have lot to give and share. I believe the timing is perfect for me to connect with UW Whitewater and do what I can to help them win big.”

Kemp’s unique abilities will be shared in a weekly learning moment that will include training tips, motivation and inspiration elements. The sessions, just ten minutes long, will be held at 2:30 every Tuesday from now through December 13 in the upper lobby of Williams Center on the UW-W campus. Everyone — UW-W athletes, UW-W students, fans, members of the community, is welcome to attend the free sessions.

“Lee Kemp brings world class insight to the wrestling program at UW-Whitewater. His background and experiences will make an immediate impact on our team,” UW-W athletic director Paul Plinske noted. “I’m especially excited about the work that Lee will be doing with all of our programs. His weekly thoughts on training for peak performance will be shared with all of our student-athletes. Many will benefit as we strive to establish championship performances in our program,” said Plinske.

Kemp is the proud father of three children, Jordan (18), Mercedes (17), and Adam (11).

The UW-Whitewater wrestling team placed third in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference last year and twenty-ninth in the NCAA Division III championship. The Warhawks will open the season with a quad meet at UW-Madison November 13 that also includes Northern Illinois and Loras. The first home appearance of the season will be November 17 at 7:00 with UW-La Crosse visiting Williams Center.

With a young squad in 2011-2012, the rebuilding process is on its way at Simpson. Only one senior and two juniors are on the team, so the young guys will get the chance to shine. The IIAC is trial by fire, so Coach Manny is hoping his young charges will learn quickly and make the adjustment to college wrestling while keeping an eye on the future. Even with a young team, there are five or six returning starters who should again make the lineup looking to improve on prior year finishes.

With the team announcing its return near the end of last season, Hibbs hsa been scrambling to fill the team and begin the process of building the program in time for this season. He is a proven recruiter at Olivet, though now he does not have the whole state of Michigan to himself anymore. He managed to nail down a pair of top recruits including undefeated state champion Jared Groeneveld. Two time runner-up Matt Tuttle also joins the program this year. The lineup will be dominated by freshmen who will use this year to get great experience while looking toward the future. See an interview d3wrestle.com did with Todd Hibbs by clicking here.

Delaware Valley names new head coach

STEVE CANTRELL NAMED NEW WRESTLING COACH AT DELAWARE VALLEY COLLEGE

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College is pleased to announce that former Division I wrestler and assistant coach Steve Cantrell has been named as the new head coach of the storied Aggie wrestling program. He replaces Brandon Totten, who resigned in August to pursue a teaching career.

Cantrell assumes the head position of one of the premier wrestling teams in all of Division III. Delaware Valley has produced 41 consecutive non-losing seasons, 14 Middle Atlantic Conference championships (the conference no longer sponsors the sport), six regional titles and five, top five finishes at the NCAA Division III Championships. Individually, the Aggies have produced nine national champions, 66 All-Americans and 20 Scholar All-Americans.

“It’s a dream opportunity to be part of a team and a program with such an incredible legacy,” Cantrell said. “To get up every day and work with young men and use the sport of wrestling to prepare them for the challenges ahead to me is the perfect job.”

Cantrell served as a member of the United States Marine Corps for 24 years before retiring from the service in 2007. He was a Commissioned Officer for 16 of those years, holding various positions as a Combat Helicopter Pilot.

As an assistant coach with the United States Naval Academy from 2001 to 2004, Cantrell was mentored by former Olympic Coach Bruce Burnett as well as current Air Force Academy head wrestling coach Joel Sharratt. The Midshipmen produced a 34-16 record and two All- Americans with Cantrell on the staff. He served as the academy advisor for academics and assisted with all recruiting, compliance and travel aspects as well as the daily practice training routines.

Cantrell wrestled for the Naval Academy from 1987 to 1991 and still ranks 19th on the all-time list with 88 career victories. He was a four-time NCAA Division I national qualifier and a three-time Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) runner-up. While enlisted with the Marines, Cantrell wrestled internationally in both greco roman and freestyle.

Cantrell is no stranger to the area or Delaware Valley College as he has been a Doylestown resident since 2007. He has worked in the business world during that time, serving most recently as the president of Spartan Consulting Group, LLC., and joined the college as an adjunct faculty member for both undergraduate and graduate classes this year.

“We are excited that we were able to hire a quality individual such as Steve Cantrell to take over as head coach of our wrestling program,” Delaware Valley College athletic director Frank Wolfgang said. “Steve possesses strong leadership skills and has worked with some of the top coaches in the wrestling world so we are confident that he will continue our success.”

Cantrell received his bachelor of science degree from the Naval Academy in 1991 and earned his Master’s in business administration from National University (San Diego, CA) three years later. He then earned his PhD. ABD in environmental economics from the University of Maryland Baltimore County in 2004. He and his wife Clare have two daughters: Olivia (12) and Charlotte (9).

Delaware Valley opens the season on Saturday, November 12 when it competes at the East Stroudsburg University Open.

Interview with new MSV coach Ryan Cooley

3

The College of Mount St. Vincent is set to begin competition in the 2012-2013 season in Division III. The school, located on the banks of the Hudson in the northwest corner of New York City, will be the fourth Division III team in New York City, joining Yeshiva, Hunter and New York University. Ryan Cooley, a program director with Beat the Streets and former NYU wrestler, has been named the new head coach and will be spending the next year getting the team ready to compete. It is great to see Division III schools adding the sport, and Cooley was kind enough to answer some questions about the program for d3wrestle.com.

d3wrestle.com: You’re set to begin competition in the 2012-2013 season. What are you doing now, over a year ahead of that, to get the team ready to compete?
Ryan Cooley: This summer I participated in the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s Leadership Academy and I gained a ton of useful insights into running a program. Combining what I learned there with my previous experiences and the guidance I’m getting from Mt St Vincent’s Administration, I’m working to build a foundation for a successful program. This year, we’re building a brand new wrestling room and ordering mats and equipment. I’m also working to surround myself with a successful staff and getting to know the many amazing people we have on campus that can be resources for our team. In addition I have to recruit, so I’m working to get the word out to the wrestling community that there is a new Division 3 Program in New York City. To spread the word, I’m trying to get to as many meets and club practices as I can, and trying to meet as many high school coaches and athletes as is possible between now and the 2012-13 season.

d3: Do you have a specific plan or strategy for filling your team over the next 12 months?
RC: I’m looking for high character kids who want to be a part of building a successful program. A talented student-athlete could go to a lot of schools and become an All-American, Academic All-American, or a National Champion, but being the first person in a program’s history to achieve those honors is really special. Interested student-athletes should fill out our recruiting form.

d3: How will your work at Beat the Streets mesh with your position at the college?
RC: When I was hired at Mt St Vincent I realized that there simply are not enough hours in a day to do both jobs to the best of my ability. As a result, I’m no longer working for Beat the Streets in a full time capacity, but I will continue to do whatever I can to help BTS grow wrestling in New York City.

d3: How has your experience as a wrestler at NYU, coach at Hunter, and Program Director at BTS prepared you for this job?
RC: To fully address this question I need to go back even earlier in my wrestling career. I started wrestling in elementary school in Libertyville, Illinois, then moved to Pennsylvania and competed in Middle School and High School. During my career at NYU I also spent summers working at the J Robinson and Ken Chertow wrestling camps. Over the last 4 years at BTS and Hunter I’ve been exposed to tons of amazing and unique wrestlers and coaches. I’ve also had the opportunity to coach youth, junior high, high school, college, and senior level wrestlers. Through all of this I’ve tried to soak up as much knowledge as possible, and now I believe that I have a truly unique perspective on the sport.

d3: What are some distinctive attributes of the college, or why should a high school wrestler consider the school?
RC: The school was founded in 1847 by the Sisters of Charity of New York. The College of Mount Saint Vincent maintains a longstanding tradition of faith, service, and compassion that reflects and honors the school’s Catholic heritage. Students of all beliefs and backgrounds continue to uphold this value of responsibility towards others. The College of Mount Saint Vincent is a small, coeducational private college of 1,600 students (75% female) located in the beautiful and historic New York City neighborhood of Riverdale on the border of Westchester County. It is a 70 – acre campus of rolling lawns and wooded hills overlooking the Hudson River, just 12 miles from midtown Manhattan. Our student to faculty ratio is 13: 1. At the Mount We offer 24 majors to choose from including Business Administration, Biochemistry, Communications, Education, etc. Also students may prepare for careers in the fields of law, medicine, dentistry, physical and occupational therapy, optometry, and podiatry through the Mount’s pre-professional programs, which meet the requirements needed to pursue advanced degrees for those professions.

d3: How will you define success the first 2-3 season of the program, and what are your long term goals?
RC: In my first three years I’d like to produce an All-American, an Academic All-American, a winning dual meet record, and a top 10 team GPA. Eventually I’d like our team to be in the top ten every year both in team GPA and at the NCAA Tournament.

d3: What do you believe are the keys to success in Division III wrestling?
RC: I believe the key to success at all levels of wrestling are surrounding a program with as many high character, high energy student-athletes, coaches, and administrators as possible. At Mount Saint Vincent we have a great start to that foundation. President Charles Flynn recently spoke about adding wrestling at the Mount’s orientation and our student body is excited about it. Between Dr Flynn, our Vice President for Student Affairs & Dean of Students Dr Dianna Dale, our Athletic Director Jay Butler, and all of the staff members they oversee, we have a great leadership structure in place to support our student-athletes. Now it’s up to me to bring quality coaches and student-athletes onto campus to take advantage of everything our school offers.

d3: What attracted you to this position?
RC: I have the opportunity to build a brand new wrestling program from the ground up at a great school in an amazing city, what’s not to love?

The next set of preseason rankings will include all 26 names at each weight. These are best guesses at weight classes and who exactly is returning. NCAA tournament placing was heavily considered, but it was not the only criteria used. If you know that a wrestler listed will be at a different weight or not competing this year, feel free to comment.

Bob Del Rosa 1936-2011

5

Bob Del Rosa, the longtime coach of the Case Western Reserve University Wrestling Team, passed away last night following complications from surgery earlier this summer. He was entering his 50th year at Case and his 46th as head coach of the wrestling team. He had recently been replaced on an interim basis by Chris Nader with the hopes that he would recover enough to return to the mats. In his five decades of service, he coached wrestling, baseball, tennis, and football and served as NCAA Compliance Coordinator. His wrestling teams had four NCAA champions, 18 All-Americans, and 35 NWCA Scholar All-Americans. He is a member of both the Division III Wrestling and Case Halls of Fame. He left an indelible mark on Case and on the lives of countless men who had him as a coach.

Coach Del Rosa recruited me when I was in high school in Northeast Ohio. I wanted a school with wrestling and engineering, and Case was on my short list. I ended up going to another school, but he was always friendly to me and my parents as I went through my college career. When I wrestled my last match in college, he was in the opposite corner, and he had been an encouragement earlier in the tournament. I would continue to see him throughout my coaching career at the Wheaton Invitational or the NCAA Championships, and he always had a smile on his face. There was no doubt he loved doing what he did, or else he would not have kept at it for 45 years. It is unfortunate that his coaching career did not end on his terms, but he also was not the kind of person who would just retire, so maybe it could not have ended any other way.

I will miss seeing him this March at the NCAA Championships in La Crosse and every March after that. Division III wrestling is better for having had him as a part of it ever since the beginning. He got to finish his career with an All-American (Isaac Dukes) and a Hall of Fame inductee (Zak Kallai) in the same season, which to me seems like a pretty good way to end things. It is also fitting that one of his former wrestlers and assistant coaches, Chris Nader, will take over for him and continue to instill the same values that Coach Del Rosa built throughout his 49 years at Case.

Joe Galante Interview on Takedown Radio

Joseph Galante, a two time All-American and assistant coach at The College of New Jersey, has been named interim head coach, replacing Dave Icenhower who retired this summer after 35 years of service. He is the third coach in the history of the program, dating back to 1966. See the press release below.

Galante tabbed as interim wrestling coach

Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey’s Executive Director of Athletics and Recreation, John Castaldo has announced the appointment of Joseph Galante as the interim head wrestling coach. Galante has served as an assistant coach for the Lions since 2007 and will begin his new post on September 1, 2011.

Galante takes over for David Icenhower, who earlier this summer announced his retirement after guiding the program for 35 seasons. Galante becomes only the third varsity head coach in program history joining Mike Curry (1966-76) and Icenhower.

“Having the opportunity to coach at my alma mater is a dream come true. The resources and support that TCNJ offers are encouraging and set our student athletes up for success after college,” Galante said.

The 2007 graduate of the College has been serving as a health and physical education teacher at Alexandria Middle School the past three years.

Galante will make his mat-side debut in Packer Hall on Tuesday, November 8 when the Lions host Stevens Institute of Technology at 7 p.m.

“Our goal as a staff is to continue the great academic and athletic tradition that the TCNJ/TSC wrestling program has built over the past 45 years,” the new coach said. “We will offer a championship wrestling experience while emphasizing the importance of academics and character.”

As a wrestler at TCNJ, Galante was three-year letter winner and claiming All-American honors in 2005 and 2007. He finished fourth at the 2005 NCAA Championships and was then a national runner-up his senior season in 2007. Galante won the 157-pound weight class at the Metropolitan Conference Championships in each of his three seasons and was a three-time national qualifier as well. He finished his standout career with a record of 84-15 and served as a team captain his final two seasons. His success wasn’t limited to the mat as he was named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Scholar Team in 2007.

“Joe has been involved with our TCNJ wrestling program for the past seven years,” Castaldo said. “His prior experience as TCNJ wrestler and as a member of Dave Icenhower’s coaching staff will serve him well in taking over our nationally-ranked wrestling program.”

Dave Kemmy promoted to AD at RWU

2

Roger Williams University wrestling coach Dave Kemmy has been promoted from acting athletic director to Director of Athletics, Intramurals, and Recration. He will be stepping aside from his role as head wrestling coach, a job he has held since 1994. In March, he was inducted into the Division III wrestling Hall of Fame. RWU is beginning a search for a wrestling coach immediately. See the full release below.

Roger Williams University names Dave Kemmy as Director of Athletics

BRISTOL, R.I. – Roger Williams University named Dave Kemmy as Director of Athletics, Intramurals and Recreation this week, two academic years after his appointment as acting athletic director for the University.

“Dave Kemmy has provided strong leadership and direction for our athletic program over the past two years and is well respected on campus, within our conference and on a national level,” says Vice President for Student Affairs John J. King, Ed.D. “He brings an exceptional degree of wisdom, energy and commitment to the position and I am delighted that he will lead our entire athletics staff and our student-athletes into the future.”

Kemmy was first named Acting Athletic Director in June 2009 following the departure of George Kolb, who left RWU to take a position at Villanova University. Over the past two years, Kemmy has guided the Athletic Department through numerous successes and improvements, most notably the construction of the $2.3 million turf field completed this summer. During the 2010-11 academic year, the Roger Williams Hawks won nine Commonwealth Coast Conference Championships; the RWU Sailing team achieved a #1 national ranking for the first time in school history in April 2011 and won its first ICSA Team Racing National Championship just a month later.

“I am very excited to get more involved with all 500 of our student-athletes, our club sport athletes and our students who participate in intramurals and recreation,” Kemmy says. “We have a great staff and I am excited about the future of our programs as we strive to give all of our students the best experience possible.”

Prior to being named athletic director, Kemmy spent 15 years as Roger Williams University’s assistant athletic director for administration, where he coordinated all team schedules, travel and game officials, in addition to his oversight of athletic budgets. He joined RWU in 1990 as director of sports information, intramurals and recreation, and served as the first head coach of the women’s soccer program for five years before becoming head coach of the wrestling team in 1994. In March 2011, Kemmy was inducted to the National Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He is a member of the Rhode Island Wrestling Hall of Fame and New England Wrestling Association Hall of Fame.
