There have been some strong additions to the roster as New England Champion, Tristan Haviland looks to make a splash at 133. New York Placer, Anthony Malfitano, and NJ State Qualifier, Mike Fernandes, also look to do some damage at 165/174. 141 looks to be a battle of the freshmen to see who makes their mark between Legg, Luchs, Mirmina, Wagner, Hellthaler, Reimers and Pagnotta.

The schedule is set for the Hawks as they travel to Pennsylvania a number of times for the Monarch Invitational (Kings College), New Standard Invite (York), and the prestigious Budd Whitehill Duals (Lycoming). To cap off the regular season, the Hawks will face JWU in a location with a great atmosphere.

Jason McLean returns to coach Muhlenberg

0

Jason McLean
Jason McLean, the first All-American in school history, will coach Muhlenberg for the 2017-2018 season. McLean was a 2001 All-American at 141 lbs. when he finished 8th in Waterloo, Iowa. He has been working in various roles in the New Brunswick, New Jersey, school district since 2003, and restarted the school’s wrestling program in 2006. He replaces Shaun Lally who resigned at the end of September. Muhlenberg kicks off the season at the Monarch Invitational on November 4th. Read on for more from Muhlenberg.

Jason McLean named head wrestling coach

10/16/17

More than a decade after becoming the first All-American in program history, Jason McLean is returning to Muhlenberg as head wrestling coach.

A 2001 graduate of Muhlenberg, McLean earned All-America honors by finishing eighth at 141 pounds at the NCAA Championships as a senior. He also won the Centennial Conference championship that year, finishing with a record of 34-11 – the second-most wins in a season in program history.

McLean also went 28-10 and was the CC runner-up at 126 in 1998. He ended his career with a 71-31 record.

“This opportunity to step in at the helm at Muhlenberg means the world to me,” said McLean upon his hiring. “I am beyond appreciative of Corey Goff [director of athletics] and the Muhlenberg faithful for giving me this opportunity and look forward to the journey ahead.”

“The plan is to lead with the same vigor, drive and persistence that helped make me Muhlenberg College’s first All-American and to fill the wall with more. I never took my last year of eligibility and chance at giving Muhlenberg a two-time All-American then; I plan on making up for it now.”

Since 2003, McLean has served the New Brunswick (N.J.) School District in a variety of roles, including head wrestling coach, assistant football coach, assistant track & field coach and assistant athletic director. He also has coached football at The Pingry School (N.J.).

In 2006, McLean re-established the defunct New Brunswick High School wrestling program after a 25-year absence. Starting from scratch and forced to practice in hallways and other area schools at the beginning of his tenure, McLean built a program whose roster numbered in the 40s. The program now fields a youth program and a competitive middle school team as well. He was also one of the co-founders of the New Jersey Urban Wrestling League.

McLean was named Greater Middlesex Conference Blue Division coach of the year in 2016 after leading the Zebras to a 21-8 record. New Brunswick qualified for team sectionals last year and have had a winning record five years running as well as qualifying a handful of wrestlers for the regional tournament.

Season Outlook:
With six returning starters back from 2016-17 and a large, talented recruiting class to add depth and fill a major need at 133 pounds, the Waynesburg University wrestling team is preparing to defend its Presidents’ Athletic Conference title.

A pair of Yellow Jacket starters, senior Tristan Buxton (125) and junior Jake Evans (285) have their sites set on reaching 100 victories this winter, with Buxton already boasting 87 collegiate wins and Evans notching 86 in just two seasons. Seniors Landon Lohr and Derek Hull provide valuable starting experience in the middle weights, while sophomores Dan Verhovsek and Kenneth Burrs look to build at successful freshman campaigns at 165 and 197 pounds, respectively.

As previously alluded to, 133 pounds was problematic for the Jackets, who, because of multiple circumstances, was left vacant for the entire second semester. Veteran head coach Ron Headlee and his staff addressed the hole in the lineup by bringing in multiple newcomers who will be competing for the job.

Speaking of rookies, there are 13 new Jackets on the preseason roster. Included in that baker’s dozen are four PIAA qualifiers. Waynesburg is also excited to welcome back former starters D.J. Grindle (141-149) and Mike Millero (174-184), who missed all of last year with injuries.

After holding its annual Orange/Black Wrestle-offs, Waynesburg gets the 2017-18 season rolling on Wednesday, Nov. 8, with a dual match against Division II opponent Shippensburg.

Two-time Academic All-American Brandon Conrad will lead the group from his 174-pound slot, where he has placed at the NCAA Regional in each of the last two years. Sophomores Hadyn Swartwood (157) and Travis Ogden (197) both won 25 matches during their rookie years, including two each at the NCAA Regional, and will be counted on to contend for NCAA qualifiers this year. Division I transfers Eric Hunt (So., 133, Lock Haven) and Garrett Wesneski (Jr., HWT, Maryland) will also be counted on to make an immediate impact. Juniors Andy Aguilar (141) and Trevor Corl (149), both of whom had winning records as junior varsity wrestlers in 2016-17, also appear ready to break into the varsity 10 and senior Brad Miccio (184) returns after an injury-riddled 12-10 season.
