0

The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week for this week is TJ Miller of Wartburg College. The 197 pound senior completed an undefeated week by topping #1 ranked Alec Bonander of Luther College 3-1 in the second Sudden Victory period during #1 Wartburg’s 42-0 shutout of the #7 Luther College Norse. This followed a 3-0 weekend at the NWCA National Duals where Miller also defeated #10 Joe West of Delaware Valley College as Wartburg rolled to the team title as well.

Miller is the defending NCAA champion at 197 and now sits at 15-2 on the year with a tournament championship at the Simpson Invitational and a 2nd place showing at the Harold Nichols open, losing there only to Iowa State starter David Bertolino. Wartburg returns to action this weekend at the IIAC duals at Coe against the host Kohawks, Simpson College, an the University of Dubuque.

NEWA Duals – Johnson & Wales defeats #1 seed Rhode Island 33-7 in the finals

MoTW: NEWA Duals

The New England Wrestling Association duals take place today at Bridgewater State College.  All 15 NEWA schools are taking part in this dual meet tournament.  Rhode Island College, in the midst of the best season in school history, has the top seed and the first round bye this weekend.  Fresh off a 5th place finish at the Budd Whitehill Duals, top ranked Michael Bonora (141) leads Rhode Island into competition.  #2 seed Johnson & Wales has had a disappointing season after the heights the team reached last year, but they appear to be hitting their stride at the right time, as an 8th place finish at the NWCA National Duals and the return of some starters has pushed them to a #16 national ranking, two spots behind #14 Rhode Island.

Rounding out the top four seeds are #3 Roger Williams and #4 Southern Maine.  Each faces a stern test to get to the semifinals, with Roger Williams to face #6 Williams and USM to face host #5 Bridgewater State.

d3wrestle.com Rankings #5 – 1/15/2008

We’ve done something a little different with this week’s rankings.  Rather than listing just the top ten and the Contenders, we’ve decided to also include the Honorable Mentions for those who may also deserve a mention.  The Honorable Mention section has always been a part of the rankings, but this is the first time it’s been included here.

Wrestler of the Week: Clayton Rush

0

Clayton Rush, a freshman 125 lb. wrestler from Coe, is the second d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week.  A two time Class A state champ from Aledo, Illinois, Rush has compiled a 27-2 record in his first year of college competition.  This past weekend at the NWCA National Duals, Rush was 5-0, including a win by fall over 2007 NCAA finalist and current #1 ranked Seth Flodeen of Augsburg.  For his efforts, Rush was named the Division III Outstanding Wrestler at the event.

The previous week, Rush was the champion of the Cornell Matman Invitational.  In the finals, he defeated 2007 All-American and previously #2 ranked Chris Heilman of Cornell, avenging a loss from earlier this season and garnerning Outstanding Wrestler honors at that even as well.  Rush and Coe College are back in action this Friday at home against IIAC foe Loras College.
