WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week: Ben Anderson

3

Yesterday’s post was for the previous week, but the d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week for the week of January 4th is Ben Anderson of Concordia University-Moorhead.  Wrestling at 141 lbs., Anderson won all five of his matches at the NWCA National Duals to help Concordia to a 6th place finish in the event.  Along the way, he defeated 2009 All-American Kevin Donahue of Cornell and 2009 NCAA Champion Minga Batsukh of St. John’s.  He also topped Alex Dahl of UW-La Crosse, Chris LeClere of Coe, and John Donaleski of Johnson & Wales.  At the time of the Duals, Anderson was ranked third, Batsukh was first, and Donahue was sixth in the d3wrestle.com Rankings.

Anderson, a junior from Frazee, Minnesota, is currently 22-3 on the year with a championship at the Cobber Open.  He was a 2007 NCAA Qualifier before just missing the tournament last season.  The wins this past weekend took him above 80 wins for his career, giving him a current career record of 81-29.  For his success this weekend, Anderson was moved to the top spot in the latest d3wrestle.com rankings at 141 lbs.  He will next take the mat with Concordia Saturday at the Blue Hawk Open at Dickinson State.

WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week: Nick Nothern

0

This one is a week late, but the d3wrestle.com/WWSPort.com Wrestler of the Week for the week of December 28th is Nick Nothern of Cornell.  Nothern won the Cornell Matman Invitational at 133 lbs. from the #3 seed, defeating #2 seed Tom Mirocha of Wartburg and #1 seeded returning All-American Matt Kelly of Wartburg.  Nothern took a pair of overtime matches over the Wartburg wrestlers to take the title.  He got a takedown in the second sudden victory period to win 7-5 against Mirocha in the semifinals and got a takedown in the first sudden victory to top Kelly 4-2.

Nothern, a senior from Salina, Kansas, is currently 11-6 on the season following this most recent weekend’s action at the National Duals.  He is a three time National Qualifier and two time All-American, placing sixth as a sophomore and second as a junior last season.  Coming into the season, Nothern had 94 career wins, so his 11 wins so far this year has taken him over the century mark and up to 105 total.  Nothern is currently ranked 8th in both the d3wrestle.com and NWCA rankings at 133, and Cornell takes the mat next on Friday at home against the University of Dubuque.
