Shenandoah to add wrestling

0

Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia, has announced plans to begin wrestling for the 2020-2021 season. The announcement was long expected, as the school began a public search for a head wrestling coach in July but deflected questions about plans to start a program. Today’s announcement included news that the search for a head coach is close to conclusion and the new head coach should be announced upon the completion of HR paperwork. The Hornets compete in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Washington & Lee and Ferrum are the other ODAC schools with wrestling. The team will compete in the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center that was completed in 2018

Department Adds Men’s Wrestling

By: Scott Musa, Associate AD

WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University announced Monday that it has added men’s wrestling as its 22nd intercollegiate athletic program.

The team, which will compete in the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center and practice in Shingleton Gymnasium, is scheduled for its first season of competition in the fall of 2020.

It is expected that at capacity the team will have 30-35 members by the 2021-22 season.

The addition was assisted in large part by a generous donation from Rob and Gene Frogale, the owners of Annandale Millwork & Allied Systems. Rob Frogale is currently the Vice Chair of the Shenandoah University Board of Trustees and Gene Frogale is a former collegiate wrestling champion.

“We believe that wrestling is going to provide another reason for young men in the Shenandoah Valley to continue their education here at home,” said President Tracy Fitzsimmons, Ph.D.

Elmira College sits approximately 10 miles north of the Pennsylvania border and 50 miles west of Binghamton.

Elmira College to Add Men’s & Women’s Wrestling Programs

ELMIRA, N.Y. — Elmira College Director of Athletics Renee Carlineo announced on Wednesday morning the addition of men’s and women’s wrestling as intercollegiate programs that will begin competition during the 2020-21 academic year. The teams expand Elmira’s varsity sports offerings to 20 intercollegiate programs.

“I am incredibly excited for the addition of two wrestling teams to our athletic department and the student-athletes to our community,” said Carlineo. “Wrestlers are gritty, resilient, and will add a new dimension to our already well-rounded student body. We have a perfect geographic location for this sport and possess unique academic offerings to attract competitive wrestlers that are academically strong.”

As part of a larger department-wide initiative, adding men’s and women’s wrestling will impact current athletic facilities in a positive way. The College will begin to explore recreating existing space for locker rooms, not only for the two new athletic programs, but also for Elmira’s current athletic varsity teams.
