Teams (17): Bridgewater State, Castleton, Coast guard, Johnson & Wales, New England, NYU, Norwich, Plymouth State, Rhode Island, Roger Williams, Southern Maine, Springfield, Trinity, WPI, Wesleya, Western New England, Williams

Returning 2019 All-Americans: Peter Del Gallo (Southern Maine, 125, 3rd), Evan Drill (NYU, 141, 5th), Taylor Shay (Roger Williams, 165, 7th), A.J. Aeberli (Coast Guard, 174, 6th), John Boyle (Western New England, 184, 1st)

Returning 2019 Qualifiers (current weights listed): Del Gallo (Southern Maine, 125), Rossetti (Williams, 141), Tempel (Castleton, 141), Drill (NYU, 149), Gazaway (Roger Williams, 149), Burns (Johnson & Wales, 149), Marsh (WPI, 157), Monteiro (Western New England, 157), Shay (Roger Williams, 165), Aeberli (Coast Guard, 174), Settles (New England, 184), Boyle (Western New England, 184), Detwiler (Coast Guard, 184), Wagner (Coast Guard, 197), Irwin (Coast Guard, 285)

Johnson & Wales (8), Coast Guard (10), and NYU (11) will battle it out for the title in the Northeast. All three have strong teams with balanced lineups. JWU graduated a lot of top end strenth from last year but has managed to reload. Coast Guard brings back four NCAA qualifiers in the top four weights and will be tough to beat in a tournament format. NYU has 2x All-American Drill and some other heavy hitters. No other teams are ranked, but there are other returning All-Americans to watch for.

Boyle won the first ever title for Western New England last season after finishing 2nd in the region. He dropped a match in a dual to the undefeated Detwiler, and those two will enter one of the toughest weights in the event along with Settles of New England who qualified last year at 174. Peter Del Gallo was 3rd last year and will be looking to match his older brother Daniel’s NCAA championship for Southern Maine. He was pinned by Arborio in a dual with Western New England, but his record is otherwise unblemished.

Augsburg has won all seven regional tournaments since the format changed in 2013, and they are the defending NCAA champions. All four of their 2019 individual NCAA champions return, though none of them are currently ranked first in their respective weights. The team is ranked 3rd and will compete with #13 La Crosse and #15 Whitewater for the team title. Augsburg returns five 2019 All-Americans, while Chicago is the only other team with more than one in Peisker and Sarasin.

Three 2018 All-Americans are back in the mix this year after not placing last season. McAuliffe (Elmhurst, 149) qualified at 141 last year after placing 7th the year before. He fell in the round of 12 last season. Massie (La Crosse, 184) finished 6th at 174 in 2018 but placed 4th in last year’s regional. Squires (Stevens Point, 184) finished 6th at 184 in 2018 but did not compete at all last season. Massie defeated Squires in the 184 lbs. WIAC final two weeks ago.

Wabash, Baldwin Wallace, and Mount Union finished in the top three spots here last season, and they appear in the current team rankings in the same order at #4, #6, and #12. All three have a shot coming away with a victory this weekend in Michigan. Wabash and Mount Union each return three 2019 All-Americans and a defending champ, while Baldwin Wallace has a pair. Olivet (#19) and John Carroll (#21) also bring strong teams to the event and feature multiple returning qualifiers.

The region features four wrestlers ranked first in the final NWCA Coaches rankings in Champagne (125), Hatch (165), Beachem (174), and Kasper (285). That list does not include returning NCAA champs James (141) and Schurg (174) along with returning runner-up Pugh (157). There is a lot of top end firepower in this region with at least one returning All-American at every weight.

The College of New Jersey leads the pack at the Mideast Regional. The 9th ranked Lions will benefit from #7 Stevens moving to the Southeast Region which opens up some spots in the top three. Ithaca and RIT are 17th and 18th in the latest team rankings and will also be strong contenders here. Each of the three teams mentioned has a pair of returning 2019 All-Americans with RIT’s King the highest returning finisher after placing 2nd last season. Brisman of Ithaca was the champion at 141 in the 2018 NCAA tournment.

There are five 4th place finishers from last year’s region back in 2020, and four are looking for their first trip to the NCAA Championships. Ortega (TCNJ, 125), Sherman (Muhlenberg, 149), Garda (TCNJ, 165), and Fratantoni (Muhlenberg, 184) are hoping to make it at least one step higher on the regional podium to earn a spot in Cedar Rapids. Wartburg and Loras are two of the top three teams in Division III, and they will slug it out for the win with 5th ranked Coe looking to jump into the top two here as well. Loras ended Wartburg’s reign of 27 straight conference titles and 220 straight conference dual wins and also finished ahead of the Knights in the 2019 NCAA Championships. Loras returns five 2019 All-Americans while Wartburg brings back two. Coe also has a pair of All-Americans back from last season. North Central, Luther, and Dubuque round out the ranked teams in the region.

While there are 11 returning 2019 All-Americans, there are no defending champions back in this region, as the region did not have an individual champion in 2019. Erickson (Coe, 157) was an All-American in 2018 who did not place last year. Radcliffe (141) qualified for Central in 2017 but just missed the tournament with 4th place regional finishes in 2018 and 2019. He will look to bookend his career with a trip back to the tournament this weekend.

Hansen to coach Emory & Henry

Emory & Henry College has announced the hiring of Pete Hansen as the first wrestling coach in school history. The Wasps plan to begin competition next season in the fall of 2020. Hansen moves over from a football coaching position at the school to take over the men’s and women’s wrestling teams. He wrestled for Southern Virginia University during their NCWA days and has been with Emory & Henry as a defensive line coach since the spring of 2019.

Emory & Henry will ultimately be one of five Old Dominion Athletic Conference schools with men’s wrestling. Ferrum and Washington & Lee compete currently, Emory & Henry and Shenandoah will begin competition this fall, and Roanoke is set to start in the fall of 2021.
