Wrestler of the Week: Cornell Beachem

The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week is Cornell Beachem of Mount St. Joseph. Beachem won the 174 lbs. weight class at the Pete Willson Wheaton Invitational this past weekend. The #3 seed started the tournament with a pair of falls before winning 14-4 over returning NCAA qualifier Hayden Kinjorski of Olivet in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he won 19-5 over #6 ranked Evan Lawrence of Eau Claire to set up a match with #1 ranked Jarrit Shinhoster of Whitewater. Beachem got the winning takedown late in the third period to take the title with a 3-1 decision. He was named Outstanding Wrestler of the 34 team event for his efforts.

Beachem, a sophomore from Cincinnati, Ohio, is currently undefeated at 12-0 on the year. He was a Division II NCAA qualifier last year for Notre Dame College before transferring closer to home for the 2019-2020 season. He began competing late this season after earning All-HCAC first team honors as a running back on the Lions football team where he led the team in rushing and receiving. Beachem and the rest of the Lions are set to host Heidelberg this Thursday.

Pete Willson Wheaton Invitational starts today

Thirty four DIII teams take to the mat today at 11am Central in the Pete Willson Wheaton Invitational. The tournament has been running since 1938 and features many of the top teams and individuals in Division III.

Wrestler of the Week: Sam Gross

The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week is Sam Gross of John Carroll. Gross participated in a pair of events last week at 157 lbs. and picked up three OAC wins for the Blue Streaks. Ranked 9th coming into the week, he started by defeating #10 Dalton Leightner of Baldwin Wallace 7-3 in a Tuesday dual. On Saturday, he won 11-7 against Shaun Wagner of Ohio Northern and picked up a fall to break a 13-13 tie in sudden victory against 5th ranked and NCAA runner-up Antwon Pugh of Mount Union. For his efforts, Gross was also named Ohio Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week.

Gross, a junior from Beachwood, Ohio, is 22-6 this year. He spent the first half of the season at 165 and dropped to 157. He was 3rd at the Ohio Intercollegiate Open, 1st at the Trine Invitational, 2nd at the RIT Inviational and 3rd at the Citrus Invitational. Gross finished 3rd at the 2019 Central Regional at 165 lbs. to earn his first trip to the NCAA Championships last season. His career record is now 54-21. John Carroll next competes tomorrow and Saturday at the Pete Willson Wheaton Invitational.

Wrestler of the Week: Paul Detwiler

The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week is Paul Detwiler of Coast Guard. Detwiler helped lead his team to a runner-up finish at the NEWA duals and went 4-0 at 184 lbs. along the way. He picked up wins against Norwich and Southern Maine to start the day before topping defending NCAA champion John Boyle of Western New England in the semifinals and Nicholas Munsch of Johnson & Wales in the finals. Boyle was ranked 4th at the time and Munsch was listed as Honorable Mention in the d3wrestle.com Rankings from the previous week. For his efforts, Detwiler was named the Outstanding Wrestler at the event.

Detwiler, a sophomore from Fleming Island, Florida, is currently 17-0 with wins at the Doug Parker, Ted Reese, and Jim Aguiar Invitationals. He is a returning NCAA qualifier and 3rd place finisher at the Northeast Region. Detwiler also was named the 2019 NEWA Rookie of the Year. His career record sits at 38-7. Coast Guard next competes at the All-Academy Championships hosted by the Air Force Academy.
