Wrestler of the Week: Jayden Cardenas

The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week is Jayden Cardenas of Cortland. Cardenas won the Racich Rumble at Ursinus College this past weekend at 133 lbs. The 2nd seeded wrestler won five matches on his way to the title including three falls and and a tech fall. After a 6-1 decision in the semifinals, Cardenas secured a first period fall against #3 ranked Dalton Rohrbaugh of York in the finals. Rohrbaugh finished 3rd in last season’s NCAA Championships. His championship helped the Red Dragons to a second place finish in the event.

Cardenas, a junior from Brooklyn, New York, is in his second season of competition with the Red Dragons thanks to losing the 2021 season to COVID cancellation. in 2022, he qualified for the NCAA Championships at 133 lbs. after winning the Mideast Region title. He compiled a 17-5 record last season, winning the NYS Intercollegiates and Messiah Petrofes tournaments. After this weekend, Cardenas is 8-0 on the year and 25-5 for his career. Cortland next competes in the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Championships at Oswego on Saturday.

Here is an update after the first week of competition. Freshmen and non-DIII transfers now have the chance to appear, and some wrestlers have been removed if there is information suggesting they may not compete in the near future. Wrestlers should be at the weights where they have competed, and that will continue to be updated as teams get the season started.

This position is a full-time, 10 month appointment. Responsibilities will include managing all aspects of the Western New England University Women’s Wrestling program including but not limited to:

Essential Job Functions:
•Recruiting and retaining student-athletes
•Practice and game planning and execution
•Coordinating technical, tactical, and fitness/conditioning training sessions
•Scouting opponents
•Supervising coaching staff
•Engaging in the planning and coordination of student-athlete development initiatives
•Assuring program is in compliance with all Departmental, University, and NCAA rules, regulations, and policies
•Participating in oversight of equipment distribution and return
•Developing and implementing fundraising initiatives at program level and assisting with fundraising at the department and University level
•Engaging in alumni relations activities
•Attending all Department, University, Conference, Professional Association and NCAA meetings and trainings as mandated by the University and the Athletic Director
•Serving on department and University committees
•Serving as a representative of the Women’s Wrestling program, Athletic Department, and University
•Conducting all program activity in a manner consistent with University and Department mission and vision
•Participating fully in strategic planning and strategic initiatives development, execution, and assessment
•Coordinating and participating in program and departmental community outreach activities
Qualifications:
•Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s in an associated field preferred
•Demonstrated Women’s Wrestling coaching ability – may include appropriate coaching licensure or certification
•Successful completion of required University mandated training is required
•Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations including Title IX
•Excellent leadership and supervisory skills
•Excellent communication and interpersonal skills 
• CPR, First Aid and AED certification necessary (we will provide if not current)
•Ability to work effectively individually and as part of a team
•The ability to articulate the vision, mission and core values of Division III Athletics and athletics at Western New England University 
•Ability to work collaboratively with Athletic Department and building staff members as well as with members/staff of other groups/divisions on Campus
•Ability to meet physical requirements of coaching profession – conducting practices, match supervision, travel, office work. (Sitting, standing, bending, reaching and lifting) in a moderate athletic environment
•Sufficient mobility to independently negotiate the University Campus

Wrestler of the Week: Luke Hoerle

The first d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week of the 2022-2023 season is Luke Hoerle of Stevens Institute of Technology. Hoerle opened his season by winning the Ned McGinley Invitational at King’s at 125 lbs. He opened with a tech fall and pin to reach the semis against #2 seed and 2022 regional 4th place finisher Jared Kuhns of York where he prevailed with an 18-5 major decision. That set up a finals match against 2022 NCAA qualifier Austin Fashouer of Wilkes. Hoerle used a pair of takedowns and strong riding to pick up a 7-2 decision and the tournament title.

Hoerle, a junior from Westfield, New Jersey, spent all of last season at 133 lbs. where he went 23-11 and finished in fourth place at the Southeast Regional. He finished 10-4 in his COVID-shortened freshman year in 2020-2021 and won a match at the NWCA DIII Championships. His career record now stands at 37-15. Stevens wrestles next this Friday in a dual against Ithaca and the following day at the Roger Williams Invitational.

Cortland has a large roster with a good combination of experience and youth. Expectations are high with 4 returning NQ and 7 total returning regional placers.
