Wrestler of the Week: Donovan King

The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week is Donovan King of Olivet. King had four falls and a tech fall at 285 on his way to the tournament title at the Ohio Northern Invitational on Saturday. His last win came via fall over 20222 NCAA 8th place finisher and #4 ranked John Fulmer of Lycoming. His win helped Olivet to a third place finish in the event.

King is currently the top-ranked 285 wrestler in Division III and has a 10-2 record on the season. Last year, he finished in 2nd place in the NCAA Championships and in the Central Regional. The Detroit native now has a 41-7 career record with 30 career falls. Olivet is next set to host Cleary and Henry Ford on Thursday followed by a trip to the Gator Boots Duals on the 17th.

Adam Greene to be first coach at Utica

Utica University has named Adam Greene to be the first men’s wrestling coach in school history. Greene most recently was an assistant coach at Oneonta and also spent one season as head coach at Siena Heights. Utica announced the start of men’s and women’s wrestling for the 2023-2024 season earlier this fall.

Utica Names Adam Greene its First-Ever Head Men’s Wrestling Coach

UTICA, NY – Utica University Athletic Director Dave Fontaine recently announced the hiring of Adam Greene as the first-ever Head Coach of the Utica University men’s wrestling program. Greene will be in charge of all facets of the program including scouting, recruiting, meets and practice preparation, as well as day-to-day operations. 
 
“We are delighted to welcome Adam to the Pioneer family and are looking forward to working with him to build our men’s wrestling program,” Fontaine said.  “We are confident that his experience and networking within the wrestling community will quickly help launch our program. This period of athletic growth is a very exciting time for Utica University athletics, and wrestling is a key piece of that progress.”
 
Greene previously wrestled at SUNY Oneonta from 2013-2016 while also serving two stints as an assistant coach at his alma mater. From 2016-2018 at Oneonta, Greene helped guide the team to three straight 12-win seasons including appearances in three consecutive NCAA Division III Championship Meets.

Wrestler of the Week: Shane Liegel

The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week is Shane Liegel of Loras. Liegel won six matches this past week in a dual against Buena Vista and the Concordia Wisconsin Open. His fall against Buena Vista Wednesday helped Loras to a 42-8 win. On Saturday, he pinned his first four opponents in the first period to make the finals against 2022 NCAA Champion Jaritt Shinhoster. The two All-Americans traded escapes in regulation before Liegel converted a low double and long scramble into the winning takedown in sudden victory (see the match here on Flo). Liegel and Shinhoster split a pair of matches last season with Liegel winning 7-4 in last year’s Concordia Open and Shinhoster winning 13-5 in the NCAA semifinals.

Liegel, a senior from Spring Green, Wisconsin, is now 10-0 on the season with championships at the Luther Open and Concordia. He finished in 4th place at the 2022 NCAA Championships, 1st place at the 2021 NWCA DIII tournament, and was a qualifier for the canceled 2022 NCAA Championships. His career record now stands at 79-9. Loras is on the mats next a week from Thursday when the Duhawks host Augsburg.

Illinois Wesleyan to add men’s and women’s wrestling

Illinois Wesleyan University, a Division III school in Bloomington, Illinois, has announced the return of men’s wrestling and the beginning of women’s wrestling for the 2023-2024 season. The school previously sponsored men’s wrestling from 1963 to 1985. The school of roughly 1,600 full-time undergraduates will compete in the CCIW in both sports. Illinois Wesleyan will be the seventh full member of the CCIW with men’s wrestling to go along with three associate members.
