2008 NCAA Qualifier Allocation

0

Here are the NCAA Qualifying tournament allocations for the 2008 championships. The only change from last season is reducing the Midwest Region from 16 to 15 as a result of Lycoming, Elizabethtown, and Messiah leaving, and increasing the Great Lakes Region from 22 to 23 as a result of good performance at the NCAA tournament. The NCAA allocates qualifiers based on a formula that takes into account the previous three years of data for number of All-Americans, number of participants, and number of schools in the qualifier.

MoTW: UW-Lax defeats Luther 28-12

0

Behind falls at 165, 174, and 184, the #3 Eagles from Wisconsin-La Crosse defeated the #5 Norse from Luther College in front of a crowd of 450 at Mitchell Hall on the campus of UW-La Crosse.  Luther’s #1 ranked Alec Bonander did not compete at 197, and his replacement fell to Andy Moore by major decision.  His presence wouldn’t have been the difference though, as the three falls from La Crosse proved too much to overcome.  See below for play by play and Sports Information releases from each school.

A 17-team field visits Levick Arena inside the Wartburg-Waverly Sports and Wellness Center Saturday, Dec. 8, for the 35th annual Dick Walker Invitational.

Action begins at 9 a.m. Updates will be posted throughout the day at http://www.go-knights.net/wrestling/dickwalker/index.html

TOURNAMENT HISTORY: The tournament is named after the late Dr. Richard Walker, Wartburg’s head wrestling coach from 1968-90. Walker guided the Orange and Black to four conference tournament titles and a school-record 54-dual win streak as part of a 180-93-4 record…Wartburg is the 12-time defending champions of the Dick Walker tourney. The Knights have won the team title in 14 of the last 15 seasons…A team championship this weekend would be Wartburg’s 20th since the tourney began in 1973…Augustana College of Rock Island, Ill., was the last team, other than the hosts, to claim the team title in 1994.

KNIGHTS NOTES: No. 2-ranked Wartburg is one of 10 ranked squads in the field. The Knights are among seven NCAA Division III programs (No. 1 Augsburg, No. 7 Coe, No. 10 Cornell, No. 19 North Central of Illinois, No. 22 UW-Whitewater, and No. 28 Loras), while three junior college teams (No. 1 Iowa Central, No. 10 NIACC, and No. 17 Ellsworth) are also in the field…Three Knights seek repeat titles Saturday. Senior 133-pounder Jake Helvey of Mitchellville, junior 157-pounder Aaron Wernimont of Pocahontas, and junior 165-pounder Justin Hanson of Humboldt each claimed championships in 2006…Junior 149-pounder Jacob Naig of Emmetsburg and senior 197-pounder T.J. Miller of Cedar Falls each won titles in 2005 and didn’t compete in the Dick Walker tourney last season…Junior 184-pounder Romeo Djoumessi of Waverly and senior heavyweight Brian Borchers of Holstein have reached the finals in each of the last two tournaments…Wartburg remained second in the third National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III top 30, released Tuesday. Nine individuals are ranked in their respective weight classes. Naig and Djoumessi are No. 1, while junior 141-pounder Zac McKray of Iowa City is second, Helvey and Wernimont are third, Borchers and Miller are fourth, and senior 125-pounder Robert Struthers of Emmetsburg and junior 174-pounder Grant Jenkins of Manchester are each at No. 10…The Knights seek their second consecutive tourney title after claiming top honors at the Simpson Storm Invitational last weekend. Wartburg crowned seven individual champions and defeated the tourney field by 187.5-175.5 for the top spot…Six individuals (freshman 125/133-pounder Jacob Mirocha of Davenport, Naig, freshman 149-pounder Jacob Groth of Marshalltown, Wernimont, Djoumessi, and Borchers) are at or above the 10-win mark going into the weekend. Naig leads the group with a 14-2 record…Naig earned the program’s first Iowa Conference Male Athlete of the Week honor of 2007-08 Monday after claiming an individual title at Simpson and going 6-0 last week.

MoTW: Luther at UW-La Crosse

Luther at Lax

Tonight, #3 UW-La Crosse hosts #5 Luther in the top matchup of the young season. The teams finished 3rd and 4th respectively in the NCAA tournament last year, and both return considerable firepower augmented by tough freshmen. Barely 50 miles apart, a strong Luther contingent should make the trip to cheer on the Norse. All individual rankings listed are d3wrestle.com rankings.

UW-La Crosse (8-0) is led by returning national champion Josh Chelf, who rolled to the title last year at 174 and has accumulated an 11-1 record with four falls this season. Chelf is ranked #1 at 174, while teammate Tim Palmer is ranked #1 at 165. Palmer finished third at 165 a year ago and is the highest returning placewinner in Division III at his weight. He sits at 12-1 on the season. La Crosse has a third returning All-American in Jordan Kolinski at 133. Ranked 7th in the nation, he placed 6th in the NCAA in 2007 and is currently undefeated. At 285, Dan Laurent was a national qualifier in 2007. Freshman Matt Mauseth has stepped into the gap at 149 left by 2006 national champion Jake Larsen, and he is undefeated at 10-0.

Luther (2-0) lost national champions Nate Hansen and Matt Pyle from the 2006-2007 team, but 2007 All-Americans Alec Bonander and Travis Grawin return. Bonander is currently the 2nd ranked wrestler at 197, while Grawin is ranked 2nd at 141. Also back for the Norse is 285 lb. 2006 All-American (and 2007 qualifier) John Miller. Miller is ranked #3 at 285. In other weights, Freshman contributors include Kevin Bokoski, 8-2 at 133, Jason Pyle, 7-1 at 149.

Matchups of ranked wrestlers could occur at 141, 174, 197, and 285. Possible lineups below:

125:
SR Lee Meirick (Luth) vs. JR Pat Parillo (LX)
Parillo is a former National Qualifier, but he has struggled to a 3-4 record this year. Meirick has been patiently waiting behind a talented group of 125’s from Luther the past few years and is making the most of his chance to start. He has run his record to 8-3 with 5 falls.
Prediction:
Meirick with a surprise fall
Luther 6 W-Lacrosse 0

133:
JR Zach Bartlett (Luther) vs. SR #7 Jordan Kolinski (LX)
Bartlett has been wrestling tough and is a formidable opponent, but he may be overmatched here. Kolinski is very talented, a returning All American, and undefeated this year.
Prediction:
Kolinski by MD
Luther 6 W-Lacrosse 4

141:
SR #2 Travis Grawin (Luth) vs. FR #10 Dan Crone (LX)
Grawin has always had tons of potential and placed 7th at Nationals last year. He also has a knack for sticking his opponents shoulders to the mat with 4 falls this season. Crone is the newcomer with potential of his own and has run his record to 5-1. This could be an interesting match.
Prediction:
Grawin’s experience is too much with a secure decision.
Luther 9 W-Lacrosse 4

149:
JR Yonny Quist (Luther) vs. FR Matt Mauseth (LX)
What an interesting matchup between guys previously not on the national scene. Quist just beat D3 Contender Barber (Simpson) and Mauseth is undefeated with a win over D3 #10 Paramski (Cornell). The question is if Quist’s experience can overcome a very hot young wrestler.
Prediction:
Quist in a back and forth match
Luther 12 W-Lacrosse 4

157:
Fr Lance Serbausek or Dustin Balsley (Luther) vs. FR Jay Milz (LX)
Another important match that, along with 149, could ultimately decide this dual. This weight pairs two first year college wrestlers that have had some early success. Milz is currently 7-6 and has been right there with some of the better wrestlers in Division 3 while the pair from Luther both sport winning records.
Prediciton:
Milz by decision
Luther 12 W-Lacrosse 7

165:
SO Wes Gregg (Luther) vs. SR #1 Tim Palmer (LX)
Here is where the momentum could start to turn in Lacrosse’s favor and if the Norsemen aren’t careful, things could quickly get out of control. Palmer is an explosive wrestler from the feet and an All American. Gregg will have to work hard to keep things close, but Palmer does not pin a lot of people.
Prediction:
Palmer too much in a MD
Luther 12 W-Lacrosse 11

174
SR #9(184) AJ Gregg (Luther) vs. SR #1 Josh Chelf (LX)
Chelf is the defending National Champion and one of the best wrestlers in all of D.3. Gregg has been tough at 184 all season most notably winning the Stevens Point tournament. While he could make things interesting, Chelf has been tough to beat for quite some time.
Prediction:
In a bit of a surprise Gregg keeps it close, but Chelf wins
Luther 12 W-Lacrosse 14

184
JR Nic Barclay (Luther) vs. JR Contender Josh Zabel (LX)
Zabel, listed as a contender, will surely be moving up with some key wins over the likes of All American Jay Figgins (Loras). He’s been behind some studs the past two years and is making the most of his chance to start. This could be a critical outcome.
Prediction:
Zabel by fall
Luther 12 W-Lacrosse 20

197
JR #2 Alec Bonander (Luther) vs. SR Contender Tim Winker (LX)
Depending on the starting weight class, Luther may need to pull things together in the last two weights with momentum going steadily in Lacrosse’s favor. Bonander would be the right guy for the job. A returning All American, he hasn’t wrestled much at just 4-1; if he’s healthy Winker will have his hands full, although Winker is looking strong at 8-1.
Prediction
Can Bonander pick up a classic Luther fall…we don’t think so this time, Bonander by MD
Luther 16 W-Lacrosse 20

285
JR #3 John Miller (Luther) vs. SO #6 Dan Laurent (LX)
Going into the final match both teams should have a chance to win, and you couldn’t ask for a better matchup than these two national caliber wrestlers. Miller has always had the ability to put tough opponents on their backs, racking up 3 falls in the last two National tournaments. The question is can he do it again, or can Laurent take advantage of a Miller mistake?
Prediction:
Miller by fall
Luther 22 W-Lacrosse 20

MacWhinnie Reaches 100 Wins

Stevens has had a wrestling team from 1919-1925, 1976-1992, and now 2004-present.  The program record for victories before the 2004 reinstatement was 50.

Del Val has 4 Champs at York

2

DelVal Logo#6 Delaware Valley paced the field with four champs at the York Invitational to run away with the team title, topping #17 York, and #8 TCNJ. With seven finalists and nine in the semifinals, the Aggies had a good weekend. Champs for the first place team included Jesse Harrington at 149 who received a forfeit from teammate Dan Hall. Hall defeated #4 Tyler Branham of TCNJ in the semifinals 8-3 before bowing out to teammate Harrington. Delaware Valley swept the three upper weights with Mike Wilcox, Joe West, and #8 Kyle Bilquist all earning convincing final round wins.

The host Spartans won two weights as #7 Kyle Flickinger took the title at 125 with a fall over highly regarded freshman Chris Sheetz of Del Val and #7 Jon Niedrich defeated #5 Ryan Herwig, also of Delaware Valley with a good 8-4 match. In other finals, Centenary’s #10 Mike Gummerson continued a strong season with 5-3 win over TJ Mitchell from Liberty. At 141, Elizabethtown’s Terry Bartholomew wrestled a good tournament before falling the Colon Lewis of Liberty in the final. 165 saw Al Wonesh of Ithaca drop a 6-2 match to Randy Moore of Gloucester Community College. TCNJ scored its only champ of the day when formerly ranked Greg Osgoody dominated #6 Brandon MacWhinnie 12-2 in a matchup of returning national qualifiers. Wilcox, West, and Bilquist finished off the day for Delaware Valley, with Bilquist putting a punctuation mark on an outstanding Aggie tournament by defeating #9 Luke Panizzi of York 6-2.

Rather than have a full double elimination format, the tournament matched semifinal losers in the consolation finals and dispensed with consolation semifinals and fifth place matches.

Heidelberg takes Messiah Petrofes

1

HeidelbergWith three champions, Heidelberg scored 162 points to beat out Cortland with 147 and Brockport with 128.5. Springfield and host Messiah rounded out the top 5. The 165 weight class surely lived up to expectations, as Cortland’s Zach Bogardus took the title, defeating David Ballard of Oneonta 3-2 to win a loaded weight class. Ballard had earlier upset #2 ranked Shaheim Bradshaw of Brockport in the quarterfinals and #8 Jake Tyler of Springfield in the semifinals before falling to #4 Bogardus. Bogardus also claimed the outstanding wrestler award for winning the toughest weight class in the tournament. He was joined by teammates Peppy Cabrerra (125), Joey Widrick (141), and Paul LeBlanc (149) atop the medal stand.

Cabrerra followed up his upset of RIT’s McInally last time out with a fall in the finals at Petrofes, and he may climb into the rankings picture. At 133, 2007 Division II All-American Boomer Fechko (Heidelberg) handled the transition to D3 nicely, winning 13-5 in the final. Widrick defeated national qualifier and top seed Billy Hall 4-3 to take the title there. A pair of returning national qualifiers squared off at 149, with LeBlanc scoring a takedown with less than 15 seconds left to beat Matt Shank of Gettysburg. Unseeded Rob Mifsud stormed to the final at 157 for Springfield before received a medical forfeit against Brockport’s #9 ranked Donald Williams. Brockport got a champ at 174, however, as #5 Eric Van Patten won a deep weight class, stopping Cortland’s #2 seeded Corey Barber 9-4. At 184, Elliot Smith of Springfield continued his impressive season with two major decisions and two falls to claim the title over national qualifier and #10 ranked Eric Fishel of Johns Hopkins. Hopkins had another finalist in Tyler Schmidt at 197, but he was unable to get untracked against Ryan Fogliano of Heidelberg who handled him 12-3. Finally, two Heidelberg wrestlers met in the 285 final, as Robert Brubeck beat teammate and national qualifier Ryan Bowers 4-2.
