Desert Duals Notes

  • #4 Adam Johnson (North Central), last year’s 3rd place finisher at 133, knocked off defending national champion #1 Dave Morgan of King’s 4-3 in Las Vegas yesterday. This could cause a shakeup in the rankings, as Morgan was ranked first, but Johnson has an earlier loss to Wartburg’s #3 Jake Helvey. Johnson also defeated #9 Gannon Hjerleid of Coe yesterday.
  • #2 Gabe Youel of North Central defeated #5 Jay Figgins of Loras 4-3 and #10 Greg Lalla of Coe on his way to an undefeated day. #1 Romeo Djoumessi did not compete, but North Central and Wartburg didn’t wrestle, so there was no chance for Youel to avenge his loss to Djoumessi in the Dick Walker finals a few weeks ago.
  • At 285, Elmhurst got its only win against Wartburg in a 39-3 match. However, it was a big one as freshman Mark Coresello deafeated the #3 ranked Brian Borchers in a close one, 5-4. Borchers had previously won three tournaments and finished 2nd in the tough Harold Nichols Open.

In a slow week for wrestling, here’s a look at some of the top events at the end of December and beyond.

January 12-13 NWCA National Duals – The top teams will be in attendance going for the dual meet title.  Augsburg and Wartburg met in last year’s final and may do so again.  Augsburg won last year, but lost to Warburg later in the season for the first season split in the rivalry’s history.  UW-Lax, Luther, Delaware Valley, and Heidelberg will all be there as well, looking to spoil the anticipated finals matchup.

February 1-2 Pete Willson Invitational – Wheaton has hosted this tournament for over 60 years, and it brings in some of the toughest teams in the Midwest.  UW-Lax, Elmhurst, North Central, Heidelberg, and Olivet headline the field with Division II Indianapolis and UW-Parkside in the mix as well.
