Merry Christmas everyone, and thanks for stopping by.  This week, the d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week is Johnson and Wales 174 lb. wrestler Jerome Owens.  Competing the in the Desert Duals this past weekend, Owens finished 4-0 as JWU finished 1-3 in Las Vegas.  Among those four victories were an 11-3 win over Wartburg’s Grant Jenkins and a 5-3 win over #1 ranked and 2x All-American Kyle Vanderhyde of Olivet.  Owens is currently undefeated at 17-0 with eight falls and championships at Ithaca and Roger Williams.

A senior from Kettering, Maryland, Owens recently topped 100 wins for his career at the Roger Williams Invitational.  He placed 8th in the NCAA last season at 174 lbs., defeating current #2 Kyle Kehrli of Cornell along the way to All-American honors.  He and fellow JWU All-American Bryan Lenhardt will lead the #20 Johnson & Wales team into the second half of the year as they prepare for the 2009 NEWA Championships and NCAA Championships.  JWU will next take the mat after Christmas on January 10th at the NWCA National Duals at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

NCAA Championships Allocation

15

In October, the NCAA released the list of qualifiers for each qualifying tournament. The full release can be found at the link below, but here is a table with this year’s information.

[TABLE=3]

Memorandum: 2009 Allocation of Qualifiers

UPDATE: If you look at the comments, you can see that this issue can be contentious as fans of different schools feel like a certain region/conference has too many or too few qualifiers.  To help the readers understand this issue, please see these two documents: Division III Allocation of Qualifiers CHART | Explanation of the Allocation of Qualifiers Chart.  The short version is that the number of qualifiers is determined by a formula taking into acount three years of data encompassing number of All-Americans, number of participants, and number of teams.  This is used to figure out how many qualifiers each school “earns,” and that number is adjusted so no team can “earn” more than 10 qualifiers.  It’s a three year running average, and the way to get more qualifiers is to perform at the NCAA tournament over a period of time.  There has been talk of going to the system now in place in Division 1 that does not use historical data, but until (and if) that happens, this is the current system.

Norwich to Drop Wrestling – act now!

To:      Wrestling Community
Fr:       Mike Moyer, NWCA
Re:      Call to Action – Save Norwich University Wrestling
Date:  December 22, 2008

Norwich University wrestling coach, Rich Hasenfus, contacted the NWCA to advise us that his administration will be eliminating their varsity wrestling program at the end of this year.  This is the second dropped wrestling program in the past week (Lawrence University has also dropped…we are working on contacting their coach for more information).  With the current state of the economy, we can be assured that more carnage is on its way for All Olympic sports if we don’t mount a very aggressive “public relations” campaign immediately.

That said, we need to have an immediate and sustained letter writing campaign directed at their university president and Chairman of the Board of Trustees executed immediately.    There contact information is as follows:

Dr. Richard M Schneider
President
Norwich University
158 Harmon Drive
Northfield, VT  05663
Gen. Gordon R. Sullivan, Chairman
Norwich University Board of Trustees
C/o David Whaley, Secretary
158 Harmon Drive
Northfield, VT 05663

When drafting your letters, please be sure to be respectful.  While this might be a very emotional issue, we always want to take the high road when voicing our opinion.  Secondly, please be sure to include the following speaking points in your letter:

·         Norwich University has a rich wrestling tradition as evidenced by the following:
a.    139 All-New England (conf. placers)
b.    47 Conference Finalists, 21 Conference Champs
c.     8 All-Americans
d.    2 National Finalist
e.    1 National Champ
f.     15 Scholar All-Americans
g.    11 Nationally Ranked teams
h.    1998 Conference Coach year – Coach Hasenfus
·         How can a military school even think about eliminating a combat sport like wrestling when you consider the following leaders with wrestling backgrounds?
a.    There are 13 former U.S. Presidents who wrestled.
b.    General Krulak, Commandant, USMC, Ret.
c.     U.S. Senator John McCain
d.    Don Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense, Ret.
e.    J. Dennis Hastert, Speaker of the U.S House of Representatives, Ret.
f.     Admiral James Holloway III, US Navy, Ret.
g.    General Norman Schwarzkopf, U.S. Army, Ret.
h.    17 active astronauts have wrestling backgrounds

·         The stated reason for dropping the wrestling program is budgetary.    How does an enrollment driven university like Norwich justify eliminating wrestling when few, if any male sports, have a more favorable ratio of high school participants to college opportunities (260,000 high school participants vs only 220 NCAA wrestling teams).

·         This decision jeopardizes more than the 32 wrestlers currently on the Norwich wrestling roster.  It affects the 7 other military colleges that sponsor wrestling as well as over 260,000 underserved high school wrestlers that now have one fewer college to pursue their academic and athletic dreams.

·         How can Norwich University make the decision to eliminate wrestling without first reaching out to the alumni and wrestling community for help?

·         According to the Norwich University 2007/08 EADA, wrestling is one of the least expensive sports at the University.  It appears that wrestling is inexpensive, has provided the school with considerable national exposure, and has done more than its fair share to help Norwich bolster its undergraduate enrollment.

In summary, it is important that the University administration believes that the public outcry is going to escalate over the following days, months, and years.  The wrestling community encourages the administration to establish an alternative plan that maintains its intercollegiate wrestling program.

133: #2 Kelly (Wartburg), #7 Cucciniello (JWU)
141: #2 McKray (Wartburg), #7 Tucker (Olivet)
149: #3 LeBlanc (Cortland)
157: #1 Wernimont (Wartburg), #2 Brew (Olivet), #3 Doan (Elmhurst), #8 Flok (Lakeland)

197: #4 Kramer (Coe), #8 Shandri (Wartburg)
285: #4 Sander (Coe), #5 Helgerson (Wartburg), #7 Corsello (Elmhurst), #9 Sutter (Lakeland)

#1 Wartburg and #2 Coe are the top teams competing this weekend in Las Vegas, though they won’t see each othere here.  Six other ranked D3 teams will compete, and it’s a good mix of teams from the Midwest and East as teams look to get some out of region exposure.  Additionally, it’s one of the only times that Pacific sees DIII competition other than at the Great Lakes Regional.

157 is the weight class with the most firepower, as four ranked wrestlers, including 1, 2, and 3, will be competing.  Aaron Wernimont, a former d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week, has won 56 matches in a row and recently achieved his 100th career win.  Jason Brew of Olivet is fresh off an OW performance at the Ohio Northern Invitational, and he comes in ranked 2nd.  Another matchup to watch is at 125 where #2 Rush and #3 Oster could meet.  Both were All-Americans last year.  Finally, #1 Vanderhyde and #4 Owens could meet in the JWU-Olivet matchup at 174.

The fans, the NCAA seeding committee, and the various rankers all hope that the teams bring their top wrestlers to this event so that as many matches as possible happen between wrestlers who may meet again in March at the NCAA tournament.

d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week: Ben Youel

0

A clutch performance at the Dick Walker Invitational earns Ben Youel of North Central the d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week award for this week.  After dispatching #8 Patrick Nagel of UW-Whitewater in the semifinals, Youel went on to a convincing 8-3 win over #1 Justin Hanson.  Hanson had earned the top spot with wins over both of last year’s finalists in the past month along with a victory over Youel at Concordia, but Youel got the better of him this time.  Youel took the title with four decisions to run his record this season to 18-2 and beat out some stiff competition for this week’s honor.

Youel, a senior from Crystal Lake, Illinois, is a two time NCAA qualifer who placed fourth in Division III last year at 165 lbs.  Along the way, he defeated Wartburg’s Hanson in the quarterfinals to go along with his victory over him on Saturday.  Youel has topped 30 wins in each of the past two seasons and will be looking for his third Academic All-American award to go along with a return trip to the NCAA podium.  Youel is currently ranked 3rd in the d3wrestle.com NCAA rankings and his North Central team is ranked fourth.  He was 3rd at the Concordia Open, and his only Division III loss this year was to Hanson at that event.  North Central is back in action tonight with a match at home against Cornell that was postponed from last night due to snow.

d3wrestle.com Rankings #4

See below for the latest d3wrestle.com rankings. Understand that these rankings take into account all results and cover the entire season. A wrestler may appear below an opponent he has defeated this season, but the higher wrestler’s body of work on the year warrants a higher position. For example, Ben Youel of North Central defeated Justin Hanson of Wartburg this past weekend, but Hanson remains above Youel because he has beaten both of last year’s finalists at that weight over the past month. Thanks for reading, and the comments are open.
