The fourth d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week is 184 lb. Ryan Malo of Williams College. Malo traveled with his team across the country from Massachusetts to Iowa where they wrestled Luther and Simpson before competing in the Simpson Invitational the next day. Malo pinned #8 Nic Barclay of Luther and received a forfeit against Simpson. In the tournament the next day, Malo bumped up to 197 and won a weight class featuring #2 Rob Kramer of Coe, #10 Brian Stueve of Buena Vista, and Contender Matt Wonderlin of Dubuque. Malo pinned Wonderlin and won a tight 5-4 match over Kramer in the finals to finish the week 6-0.
A transfer from Boston University, Malo is in his first season at Williams and currently carries a 13-0 record in 2008-2009. He won titles at the Ursinus Fall Brawl, Springfield Doug Parker Invitational, and the Simpson Invitational. Prior to college, Malo wrestled in Massachusetts for St. John’s Prep where he won two state titles and finished his senior year 58-0. He went on to place 8th in the NHSCA Senior Nationals before moving on to Boston University where he was 5-5 as a freshman before transferring to Williams this season.

UPDATE: I’m disabling comments for this post, since it is a potentially explosive topic in the sport of wrestling and no one has all the information. Also, since there is pending litigation, some of the primary parties involved are unable to either give their side of the story or correct rumors, errors, or misconceptions.
#7 St. John’s beat #2 Augsburg for the first time in 22 years this past week, and the stories from each school are linked below. St. John’s 18-13 win broke a streak of 92 straight MIAC wins for Augsburg that stretches back to the 1985-86 season. Each team had an unranked wrestler beat a ranked opponent at St. John’s 157 Matt Baarson defeated #3 Jason Adams and Augsburg 141 Lucas Murray defeated #4 Minga Batsukh. The only bonus points of the night were scored by Augsburg 197 Jared Massey in a 14-5 win, but no other match was decided by more than 3 points.

For the second week in a row, a Wartburg wrestler is the recipient of the d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week. This week, it is 165 lb. wrestler Justin Hanson. Hanson was 5-0 this weekend on his way to the title at the Concordia Open in Mequon, Wisconsin. To win the championship, Hanson had to knock off last year’s 4th place NCAA finisher Ben Youel of North Central 5-3 and last year’s NCAA runner-up Ben Hoover 11-5 in consecutive matches.
Hanson, a senior from Dakota City, Iowa, placed seventh in last year’s NCAA tournament at 165 lbs. after a 2nd place finish in the Iowa Conference to defending champion Tyler Burkle of Coe. Hanson got a late start on his season last year, not taking the mat until January 12th. He brought an 8-2 record into the tournament and finished the year at 12-4 with All-American honors. Last year was his first in the IIAC championship since placing 5th as a freshman at 157. Wartburg next takes the mat at Loras on December 3rd.
See below for the latest rankings from d3wrestle.com. Things become slightly more clear as the top wrestlers start running into each other at these early season tournaments. Also, if someone has not been wrestling, this is where we start to remove people from the rankings until they actually compete, especially if their team has wrestled more than once up to this point.
