The d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week is Jason Brew of Olivet College.  Brew, a senior from Sparta, Michigan, was the Outstanding Wrestler a the Pete Willson Invitational at Wheaton College.  The 31 team tournament brings together some of the top teams in Division III, and Brew was the champion for the second time.  He won four matches to take the title, winning by a 15-4 major decision against Zach Mizer of Heidelberg in the finals.  His efforts helped Olivet to a 7th place finish in the tournament won by Division II UW-Parkside.

Brew, a physical education major, is now 37-3 on the season and has yet to drop a match to a Division III opponent.  He was also the Outstanding Wrestler at the 19 team Ohio Northern Invitational.  He has been ranked #2 in Division III on both sets of rankings for the entire season behind only Wartburg’s Aaron Wernimont, the wrestler who defeated him in the NCAA finals last season.  He and teammate Kyle Vanderhyde are both ranked second in the nation after both were NCAA All-Americans last year.  Both are likely to crack the 40 win barrier before the NCAA Championships and will be looking to bring home NCAA titles.  Olivet is next in action Saturday at the Mid States Conference Tournament before taking two weeks off until the Midwest Regional hosted by Trine.

Pete Willson Invitational

The Pete Willson Invitational kicks off today at Wheaton College.  One of the top late season tournaments in Division III, it annually brings together many of the top teams in the midwest.  The tournament typically hosts about 30 teams, and some of the teams in attendance this weekend include #4 UW-Whitewater, #6 North Central, #9 UW-La Crosse, #11 Heidelberg, #13 Elmhurst, #16 Olivet, #23 John Carroll, #28 Messiah, and #30 Lakeland.

Needless to say, there should be a large number of ranked wrestlers in attendance including quite a few returning All-Americans.  The group is headlined by current #1 ranked wrestlers Jake Oster of Elmhurst and Austin Bautista of UW-Whitewater.

d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week: Brian Thomason

Brian Thomason of York the d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week.  Thomason, a sophomore wrestling 174 lbs., won three matches on Saturday to help York College defeat NYU, Rhode Island, and King’s.  Against King’s, Thomason defeated 2008 NCAA qualifier Mike Reilly, and he defeated Naum Shuminov of NYU the same day.  Each of them was ranked ahead of Thomason in the January 15th Metro conference rankings.  The previous week, Thomason defeated Heffernan of Wilkes and Osgoodby of TCNJ.  Going into last weekend, Thomason was ranked 5th in the conference, and over the next two weeks proceeded to defeat wrestlers 1-4 in order.

A sophomore from Wernersville, Pennsylvania, Thomason is currently 25-3 in his first season of competition for the Spartans.  A 2005 graduate of Schuylkill Valley High School, Thomason transferred to York this year from Clarion.  His only Division III loss was early this season to Frank Heffernan of Wilkes, and he avenged that loss last weekend.  He is currently the top 174 lb. wrestler in the Metropolitan Conference, and he will again compete tonight against Millersville University as he and the rest of the Spartans work toward the Metro championships February 21st.
