WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week: Eric Vincent

0

The d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week is Eric Vincent of the United States Merchant Marine Academy.  Wrestling at 197, Vincent won the All-Academy Championships this past weekend hosted by the Naval Academy.  Vincent was seeded first at his weight and won matches against wrestlers from Air Force and Navy to win the title.  His victory was only the second time a Division III athlete has won the All-Academy Championship.  Teammate Vincent Renaut won the 165 lb. championship last year at this event.

Vincent, a senior from Trussville, Alabama, is currently 22-3 on the year and was also the champion at the Long Island Open in January.  Vincent is a two time Centennial Conference champion and has made two trips to the NCAA Championships.  His conference wins have helped Merchant Marine to each of the last two Centennial team championships and a #13 national ranking.  Vincent is ranked #10 in the latest NWCA Individual rankings and is just outside the top ten in the latest d3wrestle.com rankings.  Merchant Marine will next compete tomorrow in a Centennial Conference quad at Gettysburg.  They will follow that up by attempting to defend their conference championship next weekend at Stevens.

WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week: Mark Corsello

0

The d3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week for this week is Mark Corsello of Elmhurst.  Wrestling at 285, Corsello was the champion and outstanding wrestler at this past weekend’s Pete Willson Invitational at Wheaton College.  Wrestling from the #2 seed, Corsello defeated the #7 seed in the quarterfinals and the #3 seed Lynn Panko of Indianapolis (ranked #7 in DII) in the semifinals to set up a rematch of the 2009 NCAA Championship bout against Dan Laurent of UW-La Crosse.  With the score tied 4-4 due to riding time, Corsello got a last second escape to win 5-4 over the two time defending NCAA champ.

Corsello, a junior from Park Ridge, Illinois, is 26-0 on the season and is ranked 2nd in the latest d3wrestle.com rankings.  Last season, Corsello came from the #5 seed to upset the 4th and 1st seeds on his way to the finals where he dropped a 6-3 decision to Laurent.  In 2008, Corsello finished 7th at 285.  His career record stands at 83-17, giving him 100 total career matches.  Elmhurst is off this weekend as they prepare for the CCIW Championships to be held at North Central College next Thursday.

Also worth noting is that North Central’s Gabe Youel, in winning the 184 lb. bracket, became the first four time champion since Pete Willson himself won his fourth title in 1950.

Arkadiy Levitin Passes Away

New York, NY – The Hunter College athletic community is saddened by the sudden loss of a former wrestling standout, Arkadiy “Archy” Levitin, who passed away on January 22, 2010.

Levitin, finished his four-year career at Hunter last season with a 74-11 record as one of the program’s most dominant heavyweights. Making an impact from the moment he stepped onto the mat, Levitin recorded a 30-4 record in his first season and became the first ever freshman to win the New York State Championship and was just one of two freshmen to compete in the NCAA Championship Tournament that year. During his career, Levitin would place at the New York State Championships three-times, won two Metropolitan Conference Championships, advanced to the NCAA Tournaments twice and was named an NCAA All-American. He also holds the school record for most pins and most wins in a season, along with quickest pin in a match.

“I consider myself fortunate to have coached Archy, and to have developed a close relationship with him”, stated Hunter Athletic Hall of Fame Coach Bob Gaudenzi. “He really generated so much interest and excitement for this program, because everyone loved to see him wrestle. He really had an impact on the program.”

Current interim head coach at Hunter, Mike Simmon, had the following to say about Levitin, “As a teammate and close friend of Archy’s it was remarkable to know someone with such a magnetic personality, big heart and limitless potential both on and off the mat.  It is often cliché but Archy truly was one of a kind, and I am lucky to have had him in my life.”

“Archy was a contradiction in many ways. As intimating a presence that he appeared, he was really a gentle giant. When we first met, he explained staying close to home was a priority to care for his mother who lost her battle with cancer his freshman year. He was a care giver, throughout his life. He was loyal to his teammates, friends, and to Hunter’s athletic program,” stated Hunter’s Director of Athletics, Recreation and Intramurals, Terry Wansart. “He brought a lot of excitement to our wrestling/athletic program and losing him so young, is one of the saddest moments in our history.”

A wake will be held on Saturday, January 30 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and then again on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at De Riso Funeral Home (5012 4th Avenue, Brooklyn, NY). The funeral will be on Monday morning with the time and location to be announced in the following days.

There will also be a celebration of Levitin’s life on February 3, following the first round of Hunter’s home quad match starting at 5:00 p.m. Anyone who would like to contribute to the celebration can do so by sending in your favorite memories, stories or even just a statement about Levitin. Please send those to jdebened@hunter.cuny.edu.
