Freshmen and transfers are starting to appear now that they have had the chance to compete. There may yet be a few weight changes we have missed since not every team has competed yet, but there was enough going on the first two weekends to put these together.
The first d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week for 2013-2014 is Matt Tuttle of Alma College. Tuttle, the lone senior on the Alma roster, won the Washington & Jefferson Invitational at 165 lbs. last weekend. Tuttle defeated the #6 ranked Sam Guidi of Waynesburg 9-0 in the semifinals before pinning #5 ranked (at 157) Josh Etzel of Washington & Jefferson in just 40 seconds in the finals. His victory helped lead the Scots to a 2nd place finish in the event. Additionally, his fall against Wheeling Jesuit on Friday night helped Alma secure a 22-21 win in their season opener. Tuttle is now 5-0 with four falls on the season.
Tuttle, a senior from Reading, Michigan, transferred into Alma when the program was restarted, making him the only senior on a large roster. Last year, he placed 4th in the Midwest Region, narrowly missing out on becoming Alma’s first NCAA qualifier since the team was resurrected. Last year, he won 30 matches and accumulated 18 falls. His career record is now 53-23 with 32 falls. Alma next takes the mats on Thursday with a dual meet against Wheaton at Allendale High School in Allendale, Michigan.

Season outlook:
The three-time defending champion Knights return seven starters from last year’s team as well as 2012 All-American Drew Wagenhoffer. The team will not be quite at full strength until the second semester when 2x All-American Gilberto Camacho and 2x NCAA Champion Kenny Anderson rejoin the team at the first two spots in the lineup. In the meantime, Wartburg will have four All-Americans in the lineup as Cole Welter and 2012 NCAA Champion Landon Williams move up to 165 and 174 to make room for Wagenhoffer at 157, and Ryan Fank holds down the heavyweight spot. Two time finalist Kodie Silvestri has graduated, but possibly stepping into that gap is Brandon Welter who was 30-4 last year and defeated 2013 NCAA champ Greg Sanders in an early season bout. This team will be tough to beat as currently constructed, and with the return of the two lightweights in January, it seems like a fourth straight title is the safe bet.
In an exhibition match at the NWCA All-Star Classic, Chris Donaldson of Ursinus fell 7-5 to David Terao of American.

Season Outlook:
Five starters return from last year’s Lakers team including Sow, who was top 8 in the region, Jones, who was 7th in the New York state tournament, and Cole, who was 4th in the Empire Conference. The team will hope to take a step in the right direction with help from the freshman class. With a good group of state qualifiers and an NHSCA All-American in the fold, the young team looks to rebound in 2013-2014 and get another wrestler to the NCAA Championships after senior qualifier Blake Fisher graduated last spring.

Season outlook:
Coming off a season in which they boasted an overall record of 11-7 (1-1 PAC), the Tomcats look to improve and make a run at the Mideast Region title this coming season. Among the team’s top returners are sophomore Nick Sutton, juniors Adam Matthews, Jordan Powell, Jake Lowry, and sophomore Blake Heim. All five were recently honored in the d3wrestle.com preseason rankings. As a returning all-American, Powell was ranked third at 165-pounds, while Lowry was ranked as the number-8 197-pounder in NCAA Division III. Sutton was just one match away from qualifying for nationals as a freshman at 133, while Matthews, Lowry, and Powell each won PAC titles. Heim put together a 19-8 freshman campaign, splitting time with then-senior Will Ringer, who has since graduated, with Heim expected to pick up even more mat time his second season with the Tomcats. Thiel also boasts an incoming class of accomplished wrestlers looking to fill openings in the lineup and push the upperclassmen for starting spots.

Season outlook:
Ned McGinley enters his 45th year at the helm of the King’s team, and he has one national qualifier returning with an eye on the podium. Shane Stark started last year at 174 but moved up to 184 in January and made his way to Cedar Rapids before dropping a pair of matches at the NCAA Championships. Another talented, and experience Monarch is Tommy Desir. Desir was 6th in the region and returns for his senior year at a weight where the top four wrestlers in the region have graduated. Beyond those two, King’s has a mix of experience and newcomers in the lineup with as many as five junior and seniors to go along with some incoming wrestlers who should help as they adjust to college. As with any team, health will play a big part in the dual meet record of the Monarchs.

Season outlook:
North Central returns six starters from last year’s team led by a trio of 20+ match winners in regional placewinner Nick Santos, CCIW champion Nathan Segal, and Casey Greenberg. They will compete to move the team up in the incredibly tough Midwest Region while hoping the newcomers can step in and make an impact. Tops among this is local Naperville product Josh Tardy a junior college national champion for Harper College. Illinois state champion Andrew Rodawold could also be an important part of a revamped starting lineup, while Michigan champ Tyler Daniel could push Santos at 125. It is always going to be tough to get out of that region, but Coach Kevin Bratland hopes to have the team ready to make a run.
The NCAA has release the finalist sites for the 2015-2018 NCAA Championships. The four finalists are La Crosse, Wisconsin, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Cleveland, Ohio, and Hershey, Pennsylvania. La Crosse hosted most recently in 2011 and 2012. Cedar Rapids hosted in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2013, and will host in 2014. If Cleveland or Hershey has hosted, it has not been for a very long time. Recent championships in the Eastern time zone were in Ewing, NJ, in 2006 and 1999, Ada, OH, in 2003 and 2000, and Wilkes-Barre, PA, in 2002.

Season outlook:
Cornell will be led by a pair of returning NCAA Qualifiers in 197 lb. runner-up Alex Coolidge and 149 lb. qualifier Trevor Engle. Coolidge was the #2 seed heading into last year’s tournament, and he lived up to his seed in making the finals. This year, he is the #1 ranked preseason wrestler at 197 and is a definite favorite to come home with a title in March. Engle won two matches in Cedar Rapids and fell a single match shy of All-American. He comes in ranked 8th. Just missing the trip last season was heavyweight Carl Gaul who finished 4th in a region that produced a pair of All-Americans. Beyond those three, the lineup is experienced with at least seven returning starters from 2013. With Coolidge and Engle a good bet to place this year, a little bit of improvement from some of the other returns could help the Rams make a run at a top ten finish.

With only one senior and one junior on the roster, Washington & Lee will be counting on a young team to step up and get some results for Head Coach Nathan Shearer in his third season in Lexington. Team win leader and Centennial placewinner Grant Cokely led the team in wins last season, the lone senior, Dan Igel, posted a 12-8 record in a season that ended in late January. A pair of state champions in Bennett Lewis and Rhett Delk will be counted on, along with the rest of the freshman class, to contribute right away and help the Generals return to the NCAA Championships for the first time in awhile.

Season outlook:
Elmhurst had the best season in school history last year, finishing 12-1 and bringing home the 2nd place trophy at the NCAA Championships. Mike Benefiel and Joe Rau each won titles as five total Bluejays made the podium after surviving a brutal Midwest Regional. All five qualifiers placed, but only 125 lb. Miguel Venecia returns this season, making a repeat performance in 2014 a challenge. The team will count on seniors like 2x regional placer Danny Vargas and Danny Baldera who spent most of last season in the top ten of the d3wrestle.com rankings. Two freshmen, Nick Dinardo and James Spangler, got valuable experience as starters last year, and each should improve this season. A big addition to the team is former Illinois wrestler and NCAA DI qualifier Ryan Prater. Another large group of state placers and qualifiers will also join the team this year to help make up for the loss of a great senior class.

McDaniel returns 7 of 10 starters on a team that finished 3rd at last year’s Centennial Conference Championships and finished 9th at the 17 team NCAA East Region. Led by returning National Qualifier Ryan O’Boyle, McDaniel will boast a young, but experienced line-up. The addition of Delaware’s Dave Schultz Award winner Alvontae Drummond at 141 adds to an already talented group of lightweights. Coach Blake expects big seasons out senior Logan Yox, who finished 4th in the East Region, as well as Mason Goretsas and Mike O’Boyle. Both had their 2013 seasons cut short due to injury.

Season outlook:
With five seniors in the starting lineup, Coe comes into 2013 from a position of strength. All three of their qualifiers return with Boyer and Ball each seeking their first All-American award and national runner-up Jimmy Gotto going for the title. If Gotto is to win the championships this season, it will be at 133, as he will move up from 125 this season. Two of Coe’s upper weights, Ryan Sheldon and Donnie Horner, finished 4th in the region last year, just missing out on a trip to the NCAA Championships, but both were ranked in the top ten during the season. Of the incoming wrestlers, Rutgers transfer Jan Rosenberg has the best chance to make an impact right away if he can step into the 125 spot vacated by Gotto.
