Now that the season is a few weeks old, every team has had the chance to compete. For this reason, almost anyone who has not wrestled yet has been removed from the rankings until they actually compete. Also, these rankings do not account for results that happened last night.

The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week is Hunter Ayen of Springfield. Dropping to 197 for the first time this season, Ayen won the Doug Parker Invitational in front of his home crowd. After a first round bye, Ayen pinned Mark Howard of Coast Guard in the second period before a quarterfinal pin of 2013 NCAA qualifier Josh Roometua of Wesleyan in the first period. He defeated another Coast Guard wrestler, Phillip Azzari, in the semifinals before taking on NCAA qualifier Shane Parcel of Roger Williams. Ayen came out on top of an 8-0 major decision to claim his first college tournament title. Ayen’s big day increased his season and career records to 7-3 while helping Springfield to the tournament title.

Ayen, a freshman from Gouveneur, New York, began the year at 285 and placed 6th at the Ithaca Invitational to start his career in his only other action prior to this weekend. Ayen was a New York state champion last year in the Division II 195 lbs. bracket and was a two time state qualifier. Springfield takes this week off before hitting the road and heading to the Messiah Petrofes Invitational on December 6th and 7th to finish out their 2013 competition slate.

The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week is David Welch of Roger Williams. Welch won the 184 lbs. weight class at the Roger Williams Invitational this past weekend. Welch won five matches to take the title. After a pair of easy wins, he defeated #8 Marc Wagner of Coast Guard by fall in 3:23 before taking on #2 ranked Josh Thomson of Messiah, a 2013 All-American. Welch prevailed 5-3 in sudden victory to move into the finals. There, he took on Jonathan Deupree of Southern Maine who had just won 3-1 in the semifinals against #4 ranked Colin Lenhardt of Johnson & Wales (also a 2013 All-American). Welch won 7-5 to take the title.

Welch, a sophomore from Salem, New Hampshire, is now 10-0 on the season with a win at the King’s Monarch Invitational to go along this this weekend’s win. He was 32-4 during his freshman year split between 184 and 197, giving him a current career record of 42-4. His efforts at Roger Williams led the host school to a fourth place finish. Welch and the Hawks next compete this weekend in the Doug Parker Invitational at Springfield College.

For 2013-2014, d3wrestle.com will also be publishing team tournament rankings based on the individual rankings. Each team will be scored using the following methodology:

12 points for a #1 ranking, 11 for #2 and so on down to 3 for #10

2 points for a Contender

1 point for an Honorable Mention

-1 points for not having a wrestler listed (this will keep teams with one strong individual from appearing too high)

There may be an adding error or two, but we will work to get it sorted out for next time.
