The graduation of Brian Broderick (2x NCAA finalist & Academic All-American) leaves a void that must be filled by returning and incoming team members. Other key returners include seniors Ben Kazimir at 149 pounds, Nick Hendershot at 165 pounds, Chad Zeigler at 174 pounds, Brent Kirk at 184 and junior Lucas Dies at 197 pounds.

A competitive schedule awaits the Raiders with tournaments in Pennsylvania, Florida, the NWCA National Duals in Ft. Wayne, Indiana along with hosting three events – the Mount Union Invitational, Mount Union Duals and the Mount Union Open.

The season opens with a dual match against Thiel on November 12 in Greenville, Pa.

But then we had a rash of injuries to some of our top wrestlers and we were not able to bounce back from it. We are anxious to get back into a position of challenging for a trophy at the NCAA Championships. To do so, we will need guys to continue to progress to the next level and establish themselves against the best guys in the country.

Returning 7 of 10 starters from the 2013-14 campaign and with the addition of a talented group of incoming freshmen, the Green Terror are looking to continue their progress to return to the top of the Centennial Conference and beyond. Head Coach Davey Blake is excited about the prospect of a breakout season and has set the bar high for his young group of wrestlers. Junior Ryan O’Boyle is looking to make a return trip to the All-American podium and Sophomore Alvontae Drummond is looking to make a splash on the national scene. Seven of Drummond’s ten losses were to national qualifiers/All-Americans and he just missed out on qualifying himself, losing an OT decision in the consolation final of the East Region. The return of Logan Yox from medical hardship will also bolster the Green Terror’s line-up. Yox has had mulitple wins against NCAA qualifiers and All-Americans over his career. He is looking to put his name into the All-American conversation. McDaniel is hoping for significant contributions from many of the talented freshmen that will surely add depth to their line-up.

Cody Klempay, 197-285 lb., Canon-McMillan H.S. (University of North Carolina) (151-24 high school record, Powerade champion, three-time Powerade finalist, four-time section champion, two-time WPIAL champion, placed third and sixth at PIAA AAA championships, won two matches by pin as a freshman starting heavyweight at UNC)
Landon Lohr, 157-165 lb., Somerset H.S. (Younger brother of returning All-American Luke Lohr, two-time PIAA AA state qualifier, district runner-up and champion)
Shane Lowman, 285 lb., Mt. St. Joseph H.S. (Maryland) (All-MIAA, second-team all-state, Flo Nationals participant, came one win shy of placing at the Beast of the East tournament)
Ryan Shank, 174 lb., George Washington H.S. (West Virginia) (Lindsey Wilson) (four-time high school regional finalist, regional champion, four-time W.Va. state qualifier, two-time state place-winner, NAIA national qualifier as a college freshman)
Forrest Six, 285 lb., Clay-Battelle H.S. (West Virginia) (Member of Waynesburg University football team)
Zach Swarrow, 125 lb., Beth-Center H.S. (Pitt-Johnstown) (Two-time PIAA AA place-winner, red-shirted his only year at UPJ).

Season outlook:
Fresh off its fourth PAC title over the past five seasons, the Waynesburg University wrestling team will feature a lot of new faces this winter. The Yellow Jackets must replace starters at 141, 157, 174 and 184 pounds this year and are expected to feature some intense battles for almost every other weight class.
One of the few safe bets in terms of returning starters is standout senior 149-pounder Luke Lohr, who is coming off his second-straight trip to nationals. The three-time PAC champion boasts a 79-18 overall career record and placed seventh in the country at the 2013 national championships.
Sophomore Filippo Crivelli also returns after winning the 133-pound PAC crown as a freshman last year and going 24-20 overall. Senior Sam Guidi, who won a regional title and qualified for the national championships as a sophomore, went 28-11 last year at 165 pounds, but was upset at regionals and missed out on last year’s national championship tournament.
The Yellow Jackets also bring back returning starters Gordan Bieber (Jr., 125), Patrick Jennings (Sr., 197) and Greg Kumer (Jr., 285), but they could face some serious competition from members of this year’s outstanding recruiting class. Bieber will be pushed by redshirt transfer Zach Swarrow, who spent a year at Division II Pitt Johnstown, and true freshman Tristan Buxton. Jennings is expecting to drop down to 184 pounds for his senior season, which leaves sophomore transfer Cody Klempay, who was a starting heavyweight at the University of North Carolina, to push for the job. Klempay may also wrestle heavyweight. If so, senior Gennaro Bonaventura could be the man for the job at 197. Speaking of heavyweights, returning PAC champion Greg Kumer is coming off a solid 25-16 season in his first year as a starter. However, this year’s incoming class could feature as many as three heavyweights, including Maryland prep standout Shane Lowman.
The two lead candidates for the 141-pound job appear to be sophomore Dom Ciaramella and freshman DJ Grindel. Ciaramella went 11-8 overall last year. Grindel is a three-time Maryland state qualifier who placed fourth as a senior. Senior Shane Foster returns at 157 pounds and looks like a favorite to start after backing up former four-year starter Sam Lombardo. However, he will be pushed by Landon Lohr, among others, for the position. When it comes to the starting 174-pound job, sophomore transfer Ryan Shank, who was an NAIA national qualifier at Lindsey Wilson, is a leader for the position.

133 Steve Masi – RI All-State
184 Mike Bentley – MA All-State

Season outlook:
The Rhode Island College Anchormen are excited to get underway and start preparing to compete at the national level. The team has a mix of experience and young potential. RIC will be tested by heading to Fort Wayne for the NWCA National Duals. Scholar All-American, national qualifier 125 Jonathan Murray hopes to follow in his brother’s footsteps attempting to earn all-American honors, while nationally ranked Ricondo Cole and high school teammate and national qualifier Shawn Giblin and will compete for a spot on the podium. Sr. Joe Slane came up on the national radar with a win over Fava (AA 3rd), but a nagging injury wouldn’t allow him to get to the regional, and Kyle Lake will provide depth in the middle after a solid freshman campaign; he was battled tested last year facing 5 all-Americans in a three week span at 157. Jonathan Costa has been waiting in the wing behind Silas Murray and has been working toward a breakout year. Add into the mix a transfer from Iowa at heavyweight, Terrance Jean-Jacques who was a national prep runner-up, and Matthew Libby who was a prep all American, the Anchormen have 7 potential qualifiers for Hershey. RIC has some great dark horses in the stable with all-Conference wrestler Brandon Conrad, with Justin Caparco, John Georges, and Imran Gholizadeh filling out the upper weights looking to gain all-Region honors and perhaps punch a ticket to nationals.

Season outlook:
University of the Ozarks starts wrestling for the first time this season. Several schools in other divisions have recently begun to compete, but this is the first Division III team in Arkansas. The roster should grow in future seasons, but even this year, Ozarks, like fellow newcomer Huntingdon, has a roster full of wrestlers from areas not typically served by Division III wrestling.

Paul Reid to take over Alfred State

0

Former Coe wrestlers and Whitewater assistant coach Paul Reid has been named the head coach at Alfred State College. Reid also has coached at Iowa Western Community College and UNC-Pembroke. Alfred State is in the process of transitioning into NCAA Division III competition, and the wrestling team will be eligible for the postseason in the 2017-2018 season.

Reid Named New Wrestling Coach

Alfred State athletic director Dr. Kelly Higgins is pleased to announce the hiring of Paul Reid as the college’s new wrestling coach. Reid brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Pioneer wrestling program.

Reid looks forward to the opportunity. “I am very excited to join the Alfred State family and have the opportunity to be able to guide the student athletes on the wrestling team to having success both on and off the mat. The transition to a DIII wrestling program is going to be both challenging and rewarding. I’m anxious to get onto campus and to start putting in all the hard work to make our team successful.”

Higgins echoed Reid, “We’re excited to welcome Reid as our new head wrestling coach. He brings a strong background as a competitor, along with successful experience coaching and instruction at the Junior College, DII and DIII levels. He has a plan for success, along with desire and the work ethic we were looking for when it was decided to move forward with the full time position for the program, and he has me looking forward to working with him. I’m thankful for the feedback I received from former head coach George Porter regarding the future of the program and our candidates. We look forward to his continued assistance with the program as Coach Reid moves the program into our second year of NCAA competition.”

Most recently Reid served as the head assistant wrestling coach at Iowa Western Community College (Council Bluffs, IA). In that position he assisted the head coach in all aspects of the wrestling program. On top of his wrestling duties, Reid was the game management supervisor and taught in the sports science department.

Prior to Iowa Western, Reid was an assistant wrestling coach at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (2009-2011) and at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (2008-2009).

Reid wrestled collegiately at Coe College (Cedar Rapids, IA) where he earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education. He then earned a master’s in physical education from UNC Pembroke.

“My goals for the program are to get the wrestlers to buy into both my coaching philosophy and the process of getting better at something every day. We do that with a high level of effort and the outcome will not only be success on the mat but also in all areas of life.”

Reid begins his duties immediately at Alfred State. The Pioneers open up their season on November 1st at the Brockport Invitational.
