Paul Reid to take over Alfred State

Former Coe wrestlers and Whitewater assistant coach Paul Reid has been named the head coach at Alfred State College. Reid also has coached at Iowa Western Community College and UNC-Pembroke. Alfred State is in the process of transitioning into NCAA Division III competition, and the wrestling team will be eligible for the postseason in the 2017-2018 season.

Reid Named New Wrestling Coach

Alfred State athletic director Dr. Kelly Higgins is pleased to announce the hiring of Paul Reid as the college’s new wrestling coach. Reid brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Pioneer wrestling program.

Reid looks forward to the opportunity. “I am very excited to join the Alfred State family and have the opportunity to be able to guide the student athletes on the wrestling team to having success both on and off the mat. The transition to a DIII wrestling program is going to be both challenging and rewarding. I’m anxious to get onto campus and to start putting in all the hard work to make our team successful.”

Higgins echoed Reid, “We’re excited to welcome Reid as our new head wrestling coach. He brings a strong background as a competitor, along with successful experience coaching and instruction at the Junior College, DII and DIII levels. He has a plan for success, along with desire and the work ethic we were looking for when it was decided to move forward with the full time position for the program, and he has me looking forward to working with him. I’m thankful for the feedback I received from former head coach George Porter regarding the future of the program and our candidates. We look forward to his continued assistance with the program as Coach Reid moves the program into our second year of NCAA competition.”

Most recently Reid served as the head assistant wrestling coach at Iowa Western Community College (Council Bluffs, IA). In that position he assisted the head coach in all aspects of the wrestling program. On top of his wrestling duties, Reid was the game management supervisor and taught in the sports science department.

Prior to Iowa Western, Reid was an assistant wrestling coach at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (2009-2011) and at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (2008-2009).

Reid wrestled collegiately at Coe College (Cedar Rapids, IA) where he earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education. He then earned a master’s in physical education from UNC Pembroke.

“My goals for the program are to get the wrestlers to buy into both my coaching philosophy and the process of getting better at something every day. We do that with a high level of effort and the outcome will not only be success on the mat but also in all areas of life.”

Reid begins his duties immediately at Alfred State. The Pioneers open up their season on November 1st at the Brockport Invitational.
