2016-2017 Dual Meet Record: 5-10

Top Returning Starters:
Christian Vallis (125/133)
Lucas Escobar (141)
Connor Joyce (149)
Dane Morgan (157/165)
Isaac Morales (184)

Top Incoming Wrestlers:
Dominick Reyes (149/157) – Posted a 64-9 record in last two seasons at nearby Loyola and placed first in the MIAA Tournament
Henri Behaeghel (197/285) – 88-21 in last two years and Massachusetts state champion as a senior
Max Fleming (174) – 71-17 in final two seasons and twice placed at the sectional championships in California

Season Outlook:
While Johns Hopkins does not return a Centennial Conference place-winner from last season, the Blue Jays have the makings of a solid team if they can stay healthy. A strong one-two punch at the top of the lineup in senior Christian Vallis and junior Ricky Cavallo could get the Blue Jays off to a quick start in dual meets. Cavallo was 9-4 last season and beat Stevens’ Rob Murray; two of his four losses were to eventual Centennial Conference champion Chris Tan of Ursinus by a total of five points.

A veteran group in the middle of the lineup includes three-year regulars Lucas Escobar (141), Connor Joyce (149) and Dane Morgan (157/165), while juniors Isaac Morales and Miles Gilliam give head coach Keith Norris 100 combined matches of career experience between 174-197.

With several promising newcomers showing well early in the preseason, the Blue Jays could be a factor in the Centennial Conference if they remain healthy. The six newcomers hail from five different states.

Rocco Hladney at King's (Pa.) 2/3/17
The first d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week for 2017-2018 is Rocco Hladney of Elizabethtown. Hladney missed the whole first semester last year, but he started to make up for lost time last weekend by winning the Messiah Invitational at 197 lbs. Hladney opened with a pair of major decisions before winning 21-6 against #2 seed Travis Ogden of Lycoming in the semifinals. That set up a match with 2017 All-American Kyle Koser of Messiah in the finals. Hladney prevailed with a 6-1 decision over the two time NCAA qualifier.

Hladney, a senior from Middletown, Delaware, is up at 197 this year after wrestling at 184 the past two seasons for the Blue Jays. He was 8-5 in an abbreviated season last year after going 25-13 and placing 5th at the Mideast Region in 2016. He transferred to Elizabethtown after a year at Coker College in South Carolina. Hladney was Elizabethtown’s top finisher this past weekend and will take the mat again this weekend at the Ursinus Fall Brawl.

Top Incoming Wrestlers:
Pointers Wrestling welcomes 12 new faces to the program for the 2017-18 season. The 12 wrestlers combine for 14 trips to their respective state tournaments and 5 trips to the podium.
Two recruits come to UWSP from the Wisconsin Valley Conference, Berkley Corvino (D.C. Everest, 285) and Anthony Kanable (Marshfield, 141). Corvino, who will join the team after finishing his season with UWSP Football, finished 6th at the state tournament at 220 this past season. Kanable finished with a 131-34 career record for the Tigers.

Luke Smiley (Plainfield North, 149) and Nick Pretto (Wilmington, 165) head north from Illinois to join the Pointers. Smiley was a two-time Illinois state qualifier, while Pretto qualified three times and placed 6th as a senior.

Two transfers join the team, Logan Newton (Spring Valley, 149) and Bobby Uttecht (Wittenberg-Birnamwood, 133). Newton spent last year playing football at UW-Stout after finishing 4th at state his senior season. Uttecht has spent the last three years wrestling at UW-Parkside and was also a state place winner in HS, finishing 6th.

Other state qualifiers in the recruiting class include Matt Berlin (Oak Creek, 125), Ben Kasten (Brillion, 157), and Eric Peters (Luxemburg-Casco, 149). Berlin was a three-time state qualifier and finished with a 120-26 HS record. Kasten was also at the state tournament this past season, as well as his sophomore year. Other incoming wrestlers include Kevin Jankowski (Cudahy/St. Francis/Saint Thomas More, 174), Drosianos Louvaris (Kimberly, 141), and Alex McNall (Janesville Craig, 197). All were sectional qualifiers last season, with Louvaris missing qualifying for the state tournament by a match. Jankowski won matches at the WWF Freestyle and Greco Junior State Tournaments last year, as well as at Greco Junior Nationals in Fargo this summer

Season Outlook:
Led by returning national qualifiers Ben Vosters and Dylan Diebitz the Pointers have high goals for 2017-2018. The Pointers have a deep line up featuring 7 upperclassmen and many talented freshmen and transfer students making for a highly competitive atmosphere. Iron sharpens iron, and that is an adage the team hopes will result in success this season.
