Wrestler of the Week: Paul Detwiler

The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week is Paul Detwiler of Coast Guard. Detwiler helped lead his team to a runner-up finish at the NEWA duals and went 4-0 at 184 lbs. along the way. He picked up wins against Norwich and Southern Maine to start the day before topping defending NCAA champion John Boyle of Western New England in the semifinals and Nicholas Munsch of Johnson & Wales in the finals. Boyle was ranked 4th at the time and Munsch was listed as Honorable Mention in the d3wrestle.com Rankings from the previous week. For his efforts, Detwiler was named the Outstanding Wrestler at the event.
Detwiler, a sophomore from Fleming Island, Florida, is currently 17-0 with wins at the Doug Parker, Ted Reese, and Jim Aguiar Invitationals. He is a returning NCAA qualifier and 3rd place finisher at the Northeast Region. Detwiler also was named the 2019 NEWA Rookie of the Year. His career record sits at 38-7. Coast Guard next competes at the All-Academy Championships hosted by the Air Force Academy.

Wrestler of the Week: Jaritt Shinhoster

The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week is Jaritt Shinhoster of Whitewater. Shinhoster won all three of his matches at the NWCA National Duals at 174 lbs. Highlighting his trio of wins was a 10-2 major decision over defending NCAA champion and #1 ranked Darden Schurg of Wabash. Shinhoster also topped #7 Jordan Wallace of Ithaca 12-2. The Warhawks finished with a 3-2 record at the event.
Shinhoster, a sophomore from Hoffman Estates, Illinois, is currently 14-1 on the season with eight falls. He qualified for the 2019 NCAA Championships at 174 lbs. where he finished 1-2. His career record stands at 30-8, and he was 2nd a the 2019 Upper Midwest Regional to earn his spot in the NCAA Championships. Whitewater next competes Thursday in a WIAC matchup agains La Crosse.

Hiram College to add wrestling

Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio, became the third DIII school to add wrestling this week following announcements from Roanoke and Emory & Henry. Hiram previously had a team from 1954-1987 and will be adding women’s wrestling along with restarting the men’s program. Athletic Director Todd Hibbs previously coached at Olivet College and was the first coach for the reborn Alma College team in 2011. Hiram competes in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Wabash and Ohio Wesleyan are the other schools in that conference with wrestling. The men’s team is set to compete in the 2020-2021 season with the women starting in 2021.
Hiram College Athletics to add Men’s and Women’s Wrestling Programs
HIRAM, Ohio – January 10, 2020 – Hiram College Athletic Director Todd W. Hibbs announced on Friday the addition of men’s and women’s wrestling programs as the Terriers’ 17th and 18th varsity sports.
“Men’s and women’s wrestling are strategic additions as we continue to grow the Hiram College athletic department,” Hibbs said. “Similar to recent additions of men’s volleyball and women’s cheer and STUNT, we expect these programs to have an immediate impact on our campus.”

Emory & Henry to add wrestling

Emory & Henry College in Emory, Virginia, announced their intention to begin men’s and women’s wrestling for the fall of 2020. The school becomes the second ODAC institution this week to add the sport following Roanoke’s earlier announcement. This brings the number of ODAC schools with wrestling up to five. Washington & Lee and Ferrum currently sponsor the sport, Emory & Henry and Shenandoah plan to start in 2020, and Roanoke will begin competition in 2021.
Emory & Henry is in Southwest Virginia and has an undergraduate enrollment just under 1,000. Men’s and women’s wrestling will become the 21st and 22nd NCAA sports for the Wasps.
Emory & Henry To Add Men’s And Women’s Wrestling
EMORY, Va. – Emory & Henry College Director of Athletics Anne Crutchfield has announced the addition of men’s and women’s wrestling as intercollegiate sports which will begin competition during the 2020-21 academic year. The teams expand the College’s varsity sports offerings to 22 NCAA Division III programs, IDA and IHSA equestrian teams and competitive cheer and dance squads.
“The popularity of wrestling in the region, as well as across the country, will provide Emory & Henry with a new pool of student-athletes to join our athletic programs,” said Crutchfield. “We are in the process of hiring our coaching staff, and we are excited to grow our department. Our new programs will allow these dedicated student-athletes to continue their career and sport they’re passionate about while in college.”
Roanoke to add wrestling

Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia, has announced the addition of wrestling for the 2021-2022 season. The school is a member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Washington & Lee and Ferrum are current ODAC schools with wrestling, while Shenandoah will begin the sport in 2020.
Roanoke Announces the Addition of NCAA Wrestling
Salem, Va. – Roanoke College Director of Athletics Scott Allison announced Wednesday the addition of wrestling as the College’s 22nd NCAA Division III sponsored athletic program. The Maroons will begin competition in the Fall of 2021 with a search for a head coach beginning immediately.
