Josiah Gehr

The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week is Josiah Gehr of Messiah. Gehr won the 133 lbs. weight class at the Washington & Lee Jim Crytzer Memorial Tournament last weekend. He started the day with a pair of technical falls and tacked on an 8-0 major decision in the semifinals. This set up a finals match with #1 ranked returning All-American Levi Englman of Ferrum. Gehr overcame an early 3-0 deficit to earn a 5-3 decision. For his efforts, Gehr was named MAC Wrestler of the Week.

Gehr, a sophomore from Stevens, Pennsylvania, was a 2019 regional champion and NCAA qualifier at 125 lbs. before moving up to 133 this season. He is currently 18-3 and won the Messiah Invitational while finishing 2nd at the Petrofes Invitational. His career record is now 54-10. Messiah next takes the mats this Friday at the Budd Whitehill Duals at Lycoming.

Sam Braswell wrestling 2019 2020

The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week for December 2-8 is Samuel Braswell of Averett University. Braswell won the New Standard Invitational at York College at 125 lbs. Wrestling out of the 3rd seed, Braswell picked up four wins in a row to take the title. In the semifinals, he defeated #2 seed and #8 ranked Terry Adams of Ursinus 7-5 before taking on #6 ranked and top seeded Matt Caccamise of Brockport. Caccamise knocked Braswell out of the 2019 NCAA Championships, but the Cougar was able to reverse that result with a 12-11 decision in a match that was tied at 9 after two periods. Braswell was named Outstanding Wrestler for his efforts.

Braswell, a junior from Daytona Beach, Florida, was an NCAA qualifier last season and placed 4th in the Southeast Region as a freshman. His career record now stands at 70-24. The Cougars are off until January 4th at the Jim Crytzer Invitational at Washington & Lee.

McGiffen, Taylor

The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week for December 9-14 is Taylor McGiffen of Millikin. McGiffen picked up a 9-7 sudden victory decision over #6 ranked Shane Liegel of Loras in a dual meet on Saturday. The win brought McGiffen’s record up to 7-2 and earned him the CCIW Wrestler of the Week award.

McGiffen, a junior from Alton, Illinois, originally attended Campbell University after graduating high school in 2012 and competed for the Camels for a few seasons. He returned to his native Illinois and now competes for Millikin. His next competition should be this weekend at the Gator Boots Duals in Nashville.

Elmira names Ian Clark as head coach

Elmira College has named Ian Clark to helm the resurrected wrestling college at the New York school. Clark graduated from Cortland in 2011 and was an assistant coach at Wilmington College last season and had previously spent four seasons on staff at Oswego.

Ian Clark Named Head Men’s Wrestling Coach

ELMIRA, N.Y. — Following an extensive search, Elmira College Director of Athletics Renee Carlineo is pleased to announce the appointment of Ian Clark as head coach of the Soaring Eagles’ men’s wrestling program.

Clark faces the unique challenge of building a program from the ground up. Although EC briefly sponsored men’s wrestling during the 1970s, the Soaring Eagles will return to the mat for the first time in nearly four decades during the 2020-21 academic year.

“We are incredibly excited to have Ian as the first head coach of Elmira College men’s wrestling,” Carlineo said. “Ian is a passionate coach, hard-working recruiter, and a strong teacher. We could not be more eager to see what he can do in building this program from the ground up.”
