d3wrestle.com Rankings #5 – 1/15/2008
We’ve done something a little different with this week’s rankings. Rather than listing just the top ten and the Contenders, we’ve decided to also include the Honorable Mentions for those who may also deserve a mention. The Honorable Mention section has always been a part of the rankings, but this is the first time it’s been included here.
Clayton Rush, a freshman 125 lb. wrestler from Coe, is the second d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week. A two time Class A state champ from Aledo, Illinois, Rush has compiled a 27-2 record in his first year of college competition. This past weekend at the NWCA National Duals, Rush was 5-0, including a win by fall over 2007 NCAA finalist and current #1 ranked Seth Flodeen of Augsburg. For his efforts, Rush was named the Division III Outstanding Wrestler at the event.
The previous week, Rush was the champion of the Cornell Matman Invitational. In the finals, he defeated 2007 All-American and previously #2 ranked Chris Heilman of Cornell, avenging a loss from earlier this season and garnerning Outstanding Wrestler honors at that even as well. Rush and Coe College are back in action this Friday at home against IIAC foe Loras College.

Josh Chelf, a senior 174 lb. wrestler from Wisconsin-La Crosse, is the first d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week. Chelf, the 2007 NCAA Division III champion at 174 pounds, placed 4th in the prestigious Midlands Championships at the end of December, losing only to Division I #3 Brandon Sinnott of Central Michigan by 3-2 and 3-1 scores. During the tournament, Chelf defeated the #14 and #16 ranked wrestlers in Division I at 174 lbs.
This past weekend, Chelf finished 4-0 at the North/South duals, winning all four of his matches by first period fall including a fall in 2:04 over #8 ranked Greg Osgoody of TCNJ. Chelf has been the top ranked 174 in Division III all season and has now run his record to 22-3 on the year. Wisconsin-La Crosse next competes in the NWCA National Duals this weekend in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
