UW-Stevens Point Preview

1

Five starters return from last year’s 10th place team, but both All-Americans graduate for UW-Stevens Point.  In his 11th season, Coach Johnson looks to build on last year’s top ten finish and reload with incoming freshmen and last season’s backups.  Each of the returning national qualifiers has the experience and talent to stan on the podium this coming March.  Qualifier Ben Engelland joined the team late last year after completing the football season, but he has chosen to focus solely on wrestling, so he will be with the Pointers from the opening whistle in 2008-2009.  Stevens Point looks to restock with a talented class featuring Michigan state champ Derek Saari, MI state placewinner Joe Mileski, and Alaska state champ Jeremy Fulk.  DeCleene, Wozniak, and Engelland hope to lead their team to a WIAC title after a 2nd place finish a year ago.

Division III Recruiting Commitments

9

Now that this list is getting pretty big, I will post information at the top here for each update
September 29th – Mount Union
September 22nd – Wartburg and Norwich

This is a list of Division III commitments taken mostly from InterMat’s list of all college commitments for this year. Keep in mind that there are no scholarships or letters of intent in Division III, so none of these commitments are actually set in stone until the wrestlers show up for orientation this fall. Additionally, some of these commitments are dated months ago and could have changed in the interim.

A large number of commitments have gone up since the May 1st deadline, so you will now need to click below to see the full Division III list.

Greg Ilaria has been named head wrestling coach the the Merchant Marine Academy.  Ilaria spent the last three seasons as an assistant at Springfield College following his own wrestling career at The College of New Jersey where he was a 2x All-American.  Earlier this summer, the Merchant Marine Academy posted a job opening for a head coach but made no announcement about the apparent vacancy.  Since then, they have hired Ilaria to replace Tim Alger.  USMMA returns all four of its national qualifiers from last season’s Centennial Conference championship team.  Phil Greene (133), James Beshada (141), and Eric Vincent (197) return to defend their conference titles, and Dan Twito (149) was the Centennial wildcard.  See the release below.

Manny Hopes to Continue Proud Simpson Tradition

1

Clint Manny was named to the head coach position at Simpson College in April after Ron Peterson stepped down following 13 years of leading the Storm.  In his time with Simpson, Peterson had the chance to coach Manny to 148 wins, good for the most wins in the rich history of Simpson Wrestling.  A three time All-American and two-time runner-up, Manny became one of the younger coaches in Division III when he ascended from assistant to head coach at his alma mater.

Quite a few head coaches wrestled at the school they now coach, and Manny is one of them.  He has great enthusiasm not only for coaching, but also for Simpson College.  He describes his time at Simpson as a student as some of the best years of his life, and the experience there shaped him into the person he is today.  Taking that to heart, Manny recognizes how he as a coach will help shape the college experience of his wrestlers as they traverse the four years of college.  “The value of the relationships I built at Simpson with my teammates and coaches truly is priceless, and I want to provide those same opportunities for my wrestlers,” Manny states.  He goes on to say, “Ron Peterson has taught me a lot in the last 3 years as an assistant and I’m still learning every day.”
