Corner steps down at Concordia Wisconsin

0

Bret Corner has stepped down after 21 seasons as head coach at Concordia University Wisconsin. The job has not been posted as of this writing.

CUW Announces Change In Wrestling Leadership

MEQUON, Wis. – After 21 years, Concordia University Wisconsin’s wrestling program will have a new face as its head coach. Bret Corner has resigned to focus on his full-time job in rubber product sales. CUW has begun a national search for his replacement and Director of Athletics Dr. Rob Barnhill hopes to have an announcement soon.

“It is bittersweet to have received Bret’s resignation,” Barnhill said. “He has been the heart and soul of our program since its inception and a pleasure to work with. However, this change has prompted the University to address the need to have a full-time head coach in the sport of wrestling. We have gotten by for all of these years with a part-time head coach, due solely to the dedication and commitment of Bret Corner. We are saddened to be losing him, yet excited to make the enhancement. Bret will interview with the new coach and possibly stay on as an assistant.”

Update: Simpson College Head Coach

1

Manny resigns as Simpson head wrestling coach

INDIANOLA, Iowa – After leading the Simpson College wrestling program the last four seasons, Clint Manny announced he will resign from his post as head wrestling coach.

The Storm went 6-14 under Manny in 2011-12, the most wins by a Simpson team since 2006. Manny posted a 12-53 dual record during his tenure and coached two top-4 finishers at the Iowa Conference Championships.

“I’d like to thank [director of athletics] John Sirianni for giving me this opportunity and everyone in the Simpson community who made my experience a positive one,” Manny said. “I’ve learned a ton about the sport of wrestling and about developing relationships with student-athletes, parents and co-workers. I’ve also learned a lot about myself, my coaching philosophy, my teaching philosophy and the way I live my life. The process has come full circle and it’s time for a change; it’s time for me to take on a new challenge.”

Manny was a three-time All-American wrestler for the Storm at 149 pounds, claiming national runner-up honors as a junior and senior in 2004 and 2005. He closed his career with a school-record 148 wins, going 148-24.

He spent one season as a student-assistant and two as an assistant before taking over for Ron Peterson prior to the 2008-09 season.

“We are very sorry to see Clint leave,” Sirianni said. “He was an outstanding wrestler for us, a great assistant coach and did a very good job as the head coach while competing in the nation’s toughest conference. He has been a good role model and mentor for his student-athletes, has worked his tail off and has always been extremely loyal to Simpson College. We want to wish him the very best of luck and success in all of his future endeavors.”

Manny took over a program that had only nine wrestlers. He left with a 19-man roster consisting of 15 freshmen and sophomores.

“Over the last few years we have been able to develop more of a team atmosphere,” Manny said. “We were able to compete in duals and have some individuals do some really great things. To leave those guys – especially on an upward swing – is the most difficult part of my decision.”

Reflecting upon his 11 years as a student-athlete and coach at Simpson, Manny recalls more than just wins and losses.

“I don’t remember the days when I was really upset about a loss or really excited about a win,” he said. “But I do remember the days when a kid came up and said ‘thanks’. Those are the things that are really rewarding to a coach. Those intangibles that nobody sees mean the most.”

A nation-wide search for Manny’s replacement will begin immediately, Sirianni said.

2012 Wrestler of the Year – Byron Tate

0

 197 Tate vs Baxter (4)

The 2012 d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Year is Byron Tate of Wartburg College. Tate became just the 12th wrestler to win three NCAA DIII championships with is win over Dustin Baxter of St. John’s in La Crosse. He is the second Wartburg wrestler to achieve the feat, joining former Knight Dustin Hinschberger. Tate won all three titles at 197 lbs. and finished the season with a 41-3 record. Along the way, he became the first Division III wrestler to compete in the NWCA All-Star Classic since 1989 where he wrestled 2012 NCAA Division I Runner-Up Chris Honeycutt of Edinboro. This season, he placed first at the Simpson Invitational, Dick Walker Invitational, IIAC Championships, and NCAA Championships while placing sixth in the prestigious 2011 Midlands Championships. It was Tate’s second time placing at the Midlands after a runner-up finish in 2010.

In addition to winning three NCAA titles, Tate became the 14th Wartburg wrestler to win three IIAC championships and he compiled an impressive 138-14 record with 47 falls. He has numerous wins over wrestlers ranked in Division I, and his three finals opponents at the NCAA championships combined for one NCAA championship, four runner-up finishes (3 to Tate), and nine total All-American Awards.

Wartburg Co-Head Coach Eric Keller had this to say about Tate:

“Byron has been a pleasure to coach and it’s been great to watch him improve each year. His success is a result of coming in everyday with a goal in mind and working his butt off to accomplish it. He is a guy who loves to make it a battle and made every match exactly that. He never set limits on himself, regardless of what the stage was, and the bigger the stage the more excited he got. Wartburg College is very proud of what Byron has accomplished both on and off the mat.”

Congratulations to Byron Tate, the 2012 d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Year

2012 Coach of the Year

7

 1DS11974 (Medium)

Stay tuned for the upcoming d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Year Award, but first, the 2012 d3wrestle.com Coach of the Year. The 2012 Coach of the Year award goes to Jim Miller and Eric Keller, co-head coaches at Wartburg College. Wartburg won the NCAA Championship for the 2nd year in a row and put up the fourth most points in NCAA Division III history. It was the ninth title for both Miller and the Knights.

Wartburg finished with five finalists, four champions, and eight total All-Americans. The performance was particularly noteworthy considering that Wartburg had to replace six starters from last year’s championship team. Those six new starters combined to win three titles and five total All-American Awards. The team was led by three time NCAA Champion Byron Tate, the second three time champ in school history (along with Dustin Hinschberger) and just the 12th in NCAA DIII history.

Miller has been the coach at Wartburg since 1991, and his team is currently riding a 159 match IIAC dual meet winning streak that stretches back to the 1994 season. Keller is in his second stint as at Wartburg and has been the co-head coach for each of the past two seasons. Wartburg has been in the top two of the NCAA Championships 17 of the last 21 years, and they have won four of the last five titles. Though the 2012 team had the fourth most points in NCAA history, the first through third spots are also owned by Wartburg teams. Congratulations to Coach Miller and Coach Keller

He defeated 2011 All-American Brandon Gauthier of Rhode Island to win the NEWA title and defeated the 4th and 5th seeds at the NCAA tournament to reach the semifinals. He lost a close 4-3 decision to the eventual runner up before coming back through to the 3rd place match that he dropped 1-0. For his efforts, he has been named the d3wrestle.com Freshman of the Year joining the 2011 winner Chris Burdge of Centenary and 2010 winner and 2012 NCAA Champion Kyle Kwiat of Ohio Northern. Finals Wrap Up

4

125 Kenneth Anderson (Wartburg) dec. Nathan Fitzenreider (North Central) 6-2
Anderson scored quickly and rode hard. A late first period escape and a penalty point for Fitzenreider locked the match up at 2-2. In what turned out to be a critical choice, Fitzenreider chose down in the 2nd and Anderson rode him out. A set of back points that period proved the difference, as neither wrestler made it to his feet in periods 2 or 3. Anderson reversed a 10-1 loss to Fitzenreider from earlier in the season to win his title.

133 Seth Ecker (Ithaca) major decision Jordan Westfall (Coe) 8-0
The defending champ Ecker dominated this match from the opening whistle. He secured an early takedown and tilt to build up a lead that just kept growing. Westfall wrestled a great tournament to get to this match with wins over the #2 and #3 seeds, but he had no answers for Ecker.

141 Kodie Silvestri (Wartburg) dec. Bebeto Yewah (UW-La Crosse) 11-9
In the upset of the night, Silvestri was able to match Yewah’s pace long enough to build a lead he could not lose. Yewah came out a little reckless with his shots, and Silvestri was able to secure a couple of go behind takedowns that shocked the home crowd. Later in the match, as Yewah tried to make his comeback, the official curiously did not award escapes to Silvestri even though Yewah was facing him and had completely broken contact.  Ultimately, Yewah ran out of time to come back, and Silvestri stopped Yewah from winning his third consecutive title.

149 Jeremy Stierly (Ithaca) dec. Anthony Dattolo (Wilkes) 3-1
Stierly wrestles a slow and deliberate style that sucks time off the clock and gives opponents fits as they try to mount a comeback. A late takedown and rideout gave Stierly a 2-0 lead heading into the 2nd period. They traded escapes as Stierly constantly slid sideways to the edge, giving Dattolo no room to work for a tying takedown. Dattolo seemed to lack either a sense of urgency or an attack other than his arm drag as time ran out and Stierly finally won after losing in his two previous trips to the finals.

157 Nazar Kulchytskyy (UW-Oshkosh) dec. Orlando Ponce (Augsburg) 10-9
Ponce was a second consecutive finalist who was looking for a title after two runner-up finishes, but Kulchytskyy followed a similar gameplan that he had in the semifinals. Nazar scored with a first period double leg to Ponce’s back that nearly ended the match, and he was able to hang onto the lead. Kulchytskyy does not attack constantly, but he stays in great position and when he does attack, he almost always scores. Ponce mounted a late comeback, but Kulchytskyy was able to do just enough to stave off one last takedown attempt and turn the tables on Ponce after suffering a 9-4 defeat earlier in the season.

165 Landon Williams (Warburg) dec. Nick LeClere (Coe) 7-4
LeClere struck first with a takedown in a rematch of the IIAC final and rode Williams tough. He gave up a late reversal. It became a tight match dominated mostly by Williams demonstrating the hard riding that gave him an advantage in earlier matches in the tournament. LeClere had a chance to get the tying takedown as the clock wound down, but an underhook throwby attempt became a Williams bodylock that secured the win. Wartburg was penalized a team point for excessive celebration by Williams, but it didn’t stop the Knights from having the 4th highest point total ever.

174 Kyle Kwiat (Ohio Northern) dec. Bradley Banks (Wartburg) 7-4
It was a contrast in styles as Banks is dynamic on his feet and Kwiat was the DIII tech falls leader this season. Banks scored immediately with a low single off the whistle and built up some riding time. Kwiat never panicked, even when Banks started to build up some riding time, and he fought his way back into the match. Banks nearly got another takedown on the edge, but Kwiat was able to use his own skills on top plus some end of period takedowns to come out on top and become a three time All-American with one more year to go.

184 Mike Denver (TCNJ) fall Mike Reilly (King’s) 3:55
In a rematch of the Metro finals, Reilly struck first with an early takedown and went to work on top. Denver was ready for him and earned an escape. A takedown from Denver later in the period resulted in a leg injury for Reilly that seriously hampered his ability to compete. Reilly was not really able to stop Denver at this point, and Denver was able to score in all three positions, eventually earning a second period fall. Denver was awarded the first ever Most Dominant award from the NCAA for season-long dominance.

197 Byron Tate (Warburg) dec. Dustin Baxter (St. John’s) 7-2
After a scare and some friendly officiating in the semifinals, Tate did not leave anything to chance in the finals. He put together another workman-like performance, dominating on his feet and scoring three nice takedowns to secure his third title. Baxter, like most of Tate’s opponents the past two years, was unable to get anything going, and the match had an air of foregone conclusion after the first Tate double leg.

285 Chad Johnson (Augsburg) dec. Corey Anderson (UW-Whitewater) 6-1
It was a battle of two very athletic heavyweights who both have good leg attacks. Anderson kept attacking the whole time with his nice head outside attacks, but it doesn’t take very many steps to get out of bounds when the wrestlers are this big. Johnson countered with his own attacks and really made escaping from bottom difficult for Anderson. With the sophomore Johnson winning this title, he could end up as the next of several recent 3x NCAA DIII heavyweight champions.

Hesson surprised many last year after fighting back from an early loss to finish in 5th place while avenging that early loss in the 5th place match. This year, he has not been able to sneak up on anyone and brings an undefeated record into the tournament. It is not a soft record, as he has wins over the #4 and #6 seeds as well as a win over Giaramita of Cortland. He is the favorite, but he will not go unchallenged. The weight is deep with big and athletic wrestlers, many of whom could put together a good tournament and win.

Johnson was a freshman All-American last year and is undefeated against DIII with wins over four of the competitors here. Mayer was also an All-American but has numerous losses this season. Bourressa was a semifinalist a year ago on his way to 4th place, but he is just 5-4 this year with no marquee wins.

Beyond the four All-Americans, Zitone and Mahon qualified last year but failed to place. Zitone is undefeated so far with wins over Mahon, Saliba, and Mayer. Anderson of Whitewater was an NJCAA All-American and is one of three qualifiers for the Warhawks from Rockton-Hononegah HS in Illinois. Saliba has a good record this year and is making his first trip. One to watch is Walsh from Bridgewater State. He is an Ohio State transfer who started wrestling in January and could surprise someone in an early round.
