Westminster College to begin wrestling

1

Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, announced today that they school would add men’s and women’s  wrestling for the 2017-2018 season. Mike and Tony Eierman will team up to head both teams. The liberal arts college of 950 currently offers 9 men’s and 9 women’s sports and competes in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Westminster will be the only Division III wrestling team in Missouri. The team will need to travel to reach other DIII competition, as MacMurray (138 miles away) is the only Division III team within 200 miles of campus. There is, however, a significant, NJCAA, NAIA, and Division II presence nearby.

Westminster College is perhaps best known as the site of Winston Churchill’s famous “Iron Curtain” speech in 1946. The college is an undergraduate-only institution and features 35 majors, 39 minors, and 12 pre-professional programs. The town of Fulton is approximately 25 miles southeast of Columbia, Missouri, site of the University of Missouri.

New coaches Mike and Tony Eierman are well known in the Missouri wrestling community. Mike has been running Eierman Elite Wrestling in Fulton since 2004 and is perhaps best known for coaching Olympic bronze medalist and two time NCAA Champion J’Den Cox since his youth wrestling days. Tony Eierman has previously been the head coach at nearby Father Tolton Catholic High School. Read on for the release from Westminster.

Westminster to Launch First NCAA DIII Women’s and Men’s Wrestling Programs in Missouri

FULTON, MO – “Pin to win” could well be the Blue Jays new battle cry when Westminster College introduces the first NCAA Division III collegiate women’s and men’s wrestling programs in Missouri next year, it was announced today.

The wrestling teams were announced by college President Dr. Benjamin Ola. Akande, Athletic Director Tracey Braden, and Coaches Tony and Mike Eierman. “We are excited to be adding NCAA Division III wrestling to our outstanding athletics program here at Westminster College,” Akande said. “And, we’re equally proud of the fact our Lady Blue Jay’s wrestling team will be only one of 10 women’s wrestling teams at private colleges and universities in the country.”

Akande said wrestling is a growing collegiate sport, especially in the Midwest. In Missouri alone, he said, there are 6,800 high school male wrestlers, “but no Division III collegiate wrestling programs in the state, where they can continue to pursue their passion for wrestling.”

Women’s wrestling also is taking off, with more than 13,400 high school female wrestlers competing at state championships in six states, Braden said, adding that there are 31 collegiate women’s wrestling teams on large and small campuses across the U.S.

The Eierman brothers will provide Olympic quality coaching for Westminster wrestlers. Both coaches are well known throughout the Midwest for their competitive wrestling program based in Fulton, and especially for training and coaching wrestling champions, including Olympic Bronze medalist J’den Cox.

Before coming to Mid-Missouri in 2003, Mike was a resident athlete for more than three years at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado, and over his 30-year involvement with the sport, he has trained in many other countries with some of the world’s best wrestlers.

Braden, the coaches, and Vice President of Enrollment Bobby Andrews will lead the development of Blue Jay wrestling into a nationally acclaimed NCAA Division III program, Akande said. The new teams will start competing again rival colleges for the 2017 wrestling season.

“We are excited about the prospects of bringing this high quality athletic program to our campus, and are confident our new wrestling program will help establish a national platform for Blue Jay athletics,” Akande said.

Ice Hour 16: Duane Bastress

0

A two-time NCAA Division III champion and member of the Division III Wrestling Hall of Fame, Duane Bastress has seen his share of success on the mat. Now in his fourth year as the head coach of his alma mater York College in Pennsylvania, Bastress is finally ready to have a season that’s consistent.

On Episode 16 of The Ice Hour, we’ll visit with Bastress and talk about the hurdles created in his first year by a nationally publicized hazing scandal that shut down the program for a few weeks, then eventually clearing that situation to find out his position was elevated to a full-time one.

Bastress spent some time in Mixed Martial Arts after his competitive career ended at York, but coaching called him back after previous coach Tom Kessler stepped down after over 20 years leading the Spartans.

It’s been joked that this is Bastress’ fourth first year as a head coach. We’ll check out what’s brewing in Central Pennsylvania on The Ice Hour.
