Wrestler of the Week: Taylor Mehmen

The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week is Taylor Mehmen of Coe. Mehmen was victorious at the Luther Open this past weekend at 197 lbs. In the semifinals, he defeated 2019 NCAA 3rd place finisher (ranked #1 in NWCA Rankings) Riley Kauzlaric of Whitewater in a 12-7 decision. In the finals, he defeated the returning Division II 3rd place finisher and current #2 ranked Nick Baumler of Upper Iowa in a 12-3 major decision. Mehmen is now 4-0 after opening his season last weekend.

Mehmen, a senior from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, finished 5th last year in his first trip to the NCAA Championships after placing 3rd in the Lower Midwest Region. He finished the season with a 26-9 record and currently has a career record of 59-21 with 19 falls. He was ranked #2 in the d3wrestle.com Rankings prior to his weekend debut. Mehmen and rest of the Kohawks will take on American Rivers Conference foe Central College on Thursday before hosting their home invitational on Saturday.

Wrestler of the Week: Ben Sarasin

The d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week is Ben Sarasin of the University of Chicago. Sarasin opened his season with a win at the Super 8 Invitational at Platteville for the second year in a row. He had a pair of major decisions and a pair of decisions on his way to the title. In the semifinals, he defeated NCAA qualifier and then #7 ranked Cody Baldridge of North Central before topping Shane Liegel of Loras in the finals at 184 lbs.

Sarasin, a sophomore from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, finished 7th at last season’s NCAA Championships at 174 lbs. and is 4-0 on the season. Last year, he was 32-8, giving him a career record of 36-8 a week into his second college season. Sarasin and the rest of his Chicago teammates will take on Elmhurst in a dual on Thursday before heading to the Trine Invitational on Saturday morning.
