What will NIL reform mean for DIII athletes?

0
NIL Incoming: Comparing State Laws and Proposed Legislation
https://opendorse.com/blog/comparing-state-nil-laws-proposed-legislation/

41 states are somewhere in the process of passing laws regarding the ability of college athletes to profit off of their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL). Several of these laws are set to go into effect on July 1st of this year (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, New Mexico), and several others could pass and go into effect by then. The other states either have a later effective date or their bill has not yet been voted and signed into law. Of the nine states with nothing in the pipeline, only Indiana and Maine have DIII wrestling.

These states have essentially called the NCAA’s bluff and dared the association to penalize schools and athletes that follow the new laws. Sala de culturismo de judo en Artix, sala de deportes vigra 50 mg tab venta espana tristan – gap, hautes-alpes: estudiante de staps da lecciones de deportes (culturismo y carrera). The NCAA has indicated a desire to change its bylaws, possibly as soon as this summer, to allow for athletes to profit from NIL. This is not the first time the NCAA has wanted to address the issue, but voting on a prior proposal was postponed at the most recent NCAA Convention. With the legislation going into effect shortly, the NCAA has decided (or at least said) that it is ready to make some changes.

Much has been written on this issue, including today’s Extra Points newsletter from Matt Brown in which he spoke to several schools in Ohio, including DIII schools. ESPN has a good timeline of what has happened so far. Opendorse, a company hoping to help athletes cash in on these new opportunities has a roundup of the laws and proposals in all 41 states.

What does this mean for Division III athletes and wrestlers specifically? Most DIII athletes are not in a position to become a major endorser for a national brand. More likely activities include social media sponsored posts, athletes selling t-shirts or other merchandise with their name or picture on it, local business sponsorship, and other local opportunities. Athletes will need to cultivate these relationships and make themselves marketable and desirable to potential sponsorship partners. This might also turn out to be more work than it is worth. Division III schools are unlikely to partner with outside organizations (the way Ohio State has with Opendorse) to help their athletes make the most of these opportunities. Instead, it may just be a way for athletes to promote themselves via camps and clinics to make some extra money in the offseason.

DIII bylaw 12.5.1.4 lays out all the restrictions on when an athlete’s name or picture can appear in a commercial advertisement. Most of these should go away so businesses can directly compensate athletes for the use of their images. If the local pizza place wants a life-sized heavyweight wall decal, the heavyweight can be paid for it.

It could be an exciting time for some DIII athletes, or it could be a situation where little changes at this level while the effects are all at the DI, primarily Power 5, level. Even if a wrestler makes a few hundred dollars for the use of his NIL, that is a few hundred dollars he would not have had the opportunity to earn before.

Things to watch in the future:
1. When will states put their laws into effect?
2. What will the NCAA come up with, and how will that mesh with state-by-state rules?
3. Will federal legislation eventually trump all of this and put the whole country under the same rules?
4. Which current DIII wrestler has the most Instagram followers and might be best positioned to capitalize?

Look at this rule. The whole book looks like this.

12.5.1.4 Commercial Advertisement. It is permissible for a student-athlete’s name or picture, or the group picture of an institution’s athletics squad, to appear in an advertisement of a particular business, commercial product or service, provided:

(a) The primary purpose of the advertisement is to publicize the sponsor’s congratulations to the student-athlete or team;

(b) The advertisement does not include a reproduction of the product with which the business is associated or any other item or description identifying the business or service other than its name or trademark;

(c) There is no indication in the makeup or wording of the advertisement that the squad members, individually or collectively, or the institution endorses the product or service of the advertiser;

(d) The student-athlete has not signed a consent or release granting permission to use the student-athlete’s name or picture in a manner inconsistent with the requirements of this section;

(e) If the student-athlete has received a prize from a commercial sponsor in conjunction with participation in a member institution’s promotional activities and the advertisement involves the announcement of receipt of the prize, the receipt of the prize is consistent with the provisions of Bylaw12.5.1.1.4 and official interpretations approved by the Management Council;

(f) The individual does not accept any remuneration for or permit the use of their name or picture to advertise, recommend or promote directly the sale and use of a commercial product or service of any kind; and (Adopted: 1/14/02, Revised: 9/1/20)

(g) The individual does not receive any remuneration for endorsing a commercial product or service through the individual’s use of such product or service. (Revised: 1/14/02)

Luther College assistant Coach Billy Huebner has been in the hospital fighting COVID-19 since May 9th and recently was moved out of the ICU. Click the link above to learn more about his situation and how to contribute to his medical expenses.

Update from May 18th:
Good News! I spoke with Billy last night, he is in good spirits & he is able to talk a bit more but does get winded. He is weak right now but continues to get stronger each day. He still cannot have visitors but is appreciative of the positive texts/ prayers/ well wishes that he has received.

We will get an update today from his doctors, we are hoping for more positive reports, & maybe an update on a possible discharge date.

I did tell Coach Billy about the GoFundMe page last night, he was so very grateful to all his friends and family that have been there for him in so many ways during this trying time.

Thank you, Thank you all!
We will keep adding updates as we learn more.
Let’s stay fired up for Coach Billy!

Wrestling Rules Committee makes recommendations

0

Recommendations from the NCAA Wrestling Rules Committee were released today. The 2021-2022 season is a rule book year, so the committee has the opportunity to make significant changes that are only possible every other year. The exact wording of the new rules will have to wait for the Playing Rules Oversight Panel to accept or reject the recommendations of the committee and for the rule book to be published later this year.

There are eight rules recommendations for this year. The most impactful to the actual match itself is reconfiguring overtime. The first sudden victory period would double in length to two minutes. Also, a winner would be named at the end of the first set of tiebreakers if one wrestler had at least one second of riding time. Sala de pesas en Saugues, Halle Des Sports Intercommunale – (Haute-Loire) sildigra 120 mg círculo de halterofilia chateauroux – clubes deportivos (dirección).

The second recommendation involving the actual conduct of the match would allow the referee to correct timing errors when that referee has reasonable knowledge of the correction that needs to be made. This is almost certainly in part areaction to the match between Josh Heil of Campbell and Boo Lewallen of Oklahoma State in the Division I Championships this year. Scrub to about 11:30 in this video to see the controversy. The clock did not run for the last seven seconds of the match. When this was discovered, the seven seconds were re-wrestled, and the outcome of the match changed. The proposed rule will potentially allow the officials to adjust the clock if they have enough information to do so. Read the whole description here. It is not clear that this change would have affected that specific match, but officials will possibly now have more flexibility to correct timing issues.

There is one more recommendation that does not affect the match itself, but it will likely have the largest impact of those remaining. This recommendation will allow a wrestler to weigh-in at a higher weight class one time, and rather than using the 1.5% weight loss per week rule, compete at the lower weight class after five days elapse. The final wording will be important here as it is not clear what a “one-time exemption” refers to. Is it one time per season, or does it mean a wrestler can weigh in up a weight once, but not twice in a row?

Other recommendations are as follows:

  • Moving weigh-ins to two hours or sooner before the start time of each day of competition in multiday individual or team advancement tournaments (currently, the second day is a one hour weigh-in)
  • Allowing referee video reviews (no coach challenges) for extra matches when those matches are held in conjunction with dual meet competitions
  • Allowing a 1-pound weight allowance on the second day of competition for all instances of back-to-back official team competition (currently, the allowance is only granted for consecutive dual meets, not a dual followed by a tournament)
  • Allowing referee video reviews (no coach challenges) for open tournaments.
  • Defining, for the purposes of playing rules, that any event that allowed unattached wrestlers would be considered an open event

Lastly, the committee recommends continued education for coaches and officials regarding expectations and application of the neutral out-of-bounds stalling rule.

D3 Tournament first look 125-157

5

Here are the 125-157 pre-seeds for this week’s D3 College Championships in Pocono Manor, Pennsylvania. To be eligible for this tournament, wrestlers must either be currently in school or have qualified for the 2020 NCAA Championships. 141 is the best weight in the lower half with five 2019 or 2020 NCAA qualifiers in the bracket. 133 and 149 also have multiple former qualifiers.

While many of the teams with entered wrestlers did not compete this year or had very limited competition, others competed but did not attend the NWCA Championships in Iowa last month. Finally, there are the 2020 grads who were not on teams this year but are eligible to compete. They missed out on their last NCAA tournament, but they have the chance to wrestle one more college event this week.

Wrestling begins on Thursday at 9:00am Eastern.

Which rules matter? (published to InterMat)

0

If you missed it earlier this week, I wrote an article on InterMat about the J’Den Cox weigh-in situation at the Olympic Trials two weekends ago. Since it didn’t really fit here, I was happy to be able to publish it on InterMat.

Just before the Olympic Trials started in Fort Worth, news began to ripple through the crowd that J’den Cox had missed weight and would not compete in the tournament. As a returning medalist at the non-Olympic weight of 92kg, Cox had a bye into the semifinals at 97kg. Many had anticipated a Saturday night matchup between Cox, a two-time world champion and 86kg Olympic medalist, and Kyle Snyder, the defending Olympic champion at 97kg and a two-time world champion.

As more information became public, it emerged that Cox claimed he was told the wrong weigh-in time by his coach, USA Wrestling National Freestyle Developmental Coach Kevin Jackson. Weigh-ins ended at 8:00am, but Cox did not make weight until 8:13am, according to published reports. The tournament committee met and decided that Cox could not enter, since he did not make weight in the time allotted. (Quick aside: international weigh-ins work differently than college. In college, wrestlers must be in the weigh-in area when the weigh-in begins or they cannot weigh in. Internationally, there is a weigh-in window, and wrestlers can come at any time during that window. The window ends two hours before wrestling begins.)
