d3wrestle.com 2022-2023 Rankings #2

1

Here is an update after the first week of competition. Freshmen and non-DIII transfers now have the chance to appear, and some wrestlers have been removed if there is information suggesting they may not compete in the near future. Wrestlers should be at the weights where they have competed, and that will continue to be updated as teams get the season started.

Wrestler of the Week: Luke Hoerle

0

The first d3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week of the 2022-2023 season is Luke Hoerle of Stevens Institute of Technology. Hoerle opened his season by winning the Ned McGinley Invitational at King’s at 125 lbs. He opened with a tech fall and pin to reach the semis against #2 seed and 2022 regional 4th place finisher Jared Kuhns of York where he prevailed with an 18-5 major decision. That set up a finals match against 2022 NCAA qualifier Austin Fashouer of Wilkes. Hoerle used a pair of takedowns and strong riding to pick up a 7-2 decision and the tournament title.

Hoerle, a junior from Westfield, New Jersey, spent all of last season at 133 lbs. where he went 23-11 and finished in fourth place at the Southeast Regional. He finished 10-4 in his COVID-shortened freshman year in 2020-2021 and won a match at the NWCA DIII Championships. His career record now stands at 37-15. Stevens wrestles next this Friday in a dual against Ithaca and the following day at the Roger Williams Invitational.

Johns Hopkins returns two Centennial Conference champions in Brent Lorin (133) and Joe Paul (174) to build around in head coach Keith Norris’s 18th season. The Blue Jays are deep in the middle of the lineup (149-184) and will use a mix of returnees and newcomers to fill those spots. A talented group of newcomers has been impressive in the preseason and is likely to make an early impact. Johns Hopkins has regularly out-wrestled its regular season record at the Centennial Conference and NCAA Regional Championships as Norris challenges the team with a difficult regular season schedule to prepare for February and March. With a number of young wrestlers likely to dot the lineup, the formula should be the same this season.
